Free agency update

Rashard Lewis has agreed to sign a five-year contract with the Magic in the $75 millon to $85 million range, which forced the team to withdraw their qualifying offer to Darko Milicic, making him an unrestricted free agent. On paper, a Lewis/Dwight Howard marriage seems like a good one for Orlando. Lewis is mainly a face up scorer with a deadly outside jumper, so he should find some open looks when teams try to double Howard down low. Meanwhile, Milicic still may re-sign with the team, but he wants a contract approaching $10 million a year, but there may not be that kind of demand for him at this point.

Other news:

Chauncey Billups and the Pistons are reportedly close to an agreement that would keep the point guard in Detroit. The contract could reach five years and $60 M, but it’s not a done deal yet. He’s the top point guard in free agency, but is getting on in years so the team may regret this signing by the end of the contract.

Vince Carter agrees to re-sign with the Nets for four years. The team continues to move sideways, but should have a little more success next season if they can keep their top four players healthy.

Word out of Charlotte is that they want to re-sign Gerald Wallace, but no agreement has been reached. He brings a lot to the table and I’m surprised he’s not getting more attention around the league.

Memphis is making a push for restricted free agent Andres Nocioni, which will put the Bulls in a tough spot if they intend to match.

Milwaukee is talking to both Mo Williams and Charlie Bell. Williams has drawn some interest from teams over the salary cap (and are only able to offer around $5.5 million per season), so the Bucks should be able to win his services in the $6-$7 million range, which is good news considering that there are teams under the cap who should be more interested.

Billups heading back to Detroit?

Chris McCosky of Detroit News told AM1130 WDFN in Detroit that Chauncey Billups has agreed in principle to sign a new five year contract for around $12 million a year with the Pistons. The exact numbers of the contract is still being worked out and nothing is official at this point, but it looks like the Pistons will have their starting point guard back for 2008.

According to McCosky, the Pistons are still in great shape to possibly make a run for Grant Hill and possibly Amir Johnson.

NBA draft impressions

Last week’s NBA Draft didn’t provide many early surprises, but Bucks fan John Paulsen was as surprised as anyone to see Milwaukee tab Yi Jianlian at #6. It’s just one of the notes John offers up in his Draft Impressions column for Bullz-Eye.com, along with his thoughts on the Ray Allen and Jason Richardson trades.

Bulls land Weird Al

With the ninth pick in the draft, the Chicago Bulls took forward Joakim Noah out of Florida. Is it just me or did Noah look like Weird Al Yankovic before he put the Bulls hat on? Anyway, even though he’s not expected to dominate at the next level offensively, Noah has a non-stop motor, will crash the boards and plays hard on every play. Kind of like how Ben Wallace played in Detroit before he stole $60 million from Chicago last year.

Noah was the third Gator selected in the top 10 of the draft, joining Al Horford (No. 3 to Atlanta) and Corey Brewer (No. 7 to Minnesota). I made the same remark in regard to Ohio State in the blog about Greg Oden, but what a year for Florida. A national championship in football, basketball and now three players go in the top 10 of the NBA draft. Can’t get much better than that.

Sonics select Durant, will acquire Green

With the second pick in the NBA draft, the Seattle Sonics selected Texas forward Kevin Durant. Even though Greg Oden was selected first overall by the Blazers, many believe Durant has the best chance to win Rookie of the Year honors.

Seattle is also expected to ship Ray Allen to Boston for the rights of Georgetown’s Jeff Green, who the Celtics took with the fifth overall pick. ESPN is reporting the deal is basically done – Green already did an interview commenting how excited he is to play with Durant – but nothing is final as of this point.
