10 Most Famous Sports Fans

THE LOVE OF SPORTS comprised a list dedicated to you, crazy sports fan, ranking the top 10 most famous sports fans of all time.

5. Morganna The Kissing Bandit
This buxom blond was famous in the ‘70s and ‘80s for running onto the field at baseball games in a skimpy outfit and planting a big smooch on a player’s lips. Her first “victim” was Pete Rose during a game at Riverfront Stadium in 1971. Some of the other athletes she puckered up to were George Brett, Cal Ripken, Jr., Don Mattingly, Nolan Ryan and Charles Barkley. Morganna parlayed her fame into appearances on both the Johnny Carson and David Letterman shows.

1. Steve Bartman
The Cubs led the Marlins 3-0 in the eighth inning of Game 6 of the 2003 NLCS and were just five outs away from advancing to the World Series for the first time since 1945. It was then that Luis Castillo hit a pop foul down the left field line. Cubs’ left fielder Moises Alou reached into the stands at “the not-so-friendly confines” of Wrigley Field to make the play, but Steve Bartman, a 26-year-old Cub fan, tried to catch the ball and inadvertently knocked it away from him. The Cubs fell apart after that, losing the game and the series. Bartman was lampooned by the media and became public enemy No. 1 in Chicago. Let it go Cub fans. Blaming this guy for the ‘03 collapse is as ridiculous as attributing 100 years of futility to a billy goat.

Doesn’t George Brett look like Woody (Harrelson) from Cheers in that picture? And I agree with TLOS – Cubs fans need to let the whole Bartman thing go. It’s almost as annoying as Red Sox fans blaming Bill Buckner for everything that has ever went wrong for the Red Sox, their fans or the city of Boston.

Friday Morning Headliners: Morneau’s big night

– Justin Morneau went off on the Tigers Thursday night, collecting five hits including a home run in the 11th to give the Twins a 7-6 victory in extra innings. Interesting enough, Morneau finished 5 for 5 with two doubles, but only knocked in one RBI. One would think he would have had more ribbies in a 5 for 5 performance.

– Want another five hit performance? Try Hanley Ramirez, who went 5 for 6 for the Marlins in Florida’s 5-4 win over the Dodgers. Ramirez mirrored Morneau’s performance, hommering in the top of the 11th to give the Fish an extra innings victory.

– The Mets are on a tear again, collecting their sixth straight in a 7-3 win over the Giants. Fernando Tatis went 3 for 5 with four RBI and a dinger.

– The acquisition of C.C. Sabathia has obviously lifted the Brewers, who are now 7-3 in their last 10 games. Dave Bush struck out a season-high 13 batters, yielding just one run off four hits in Milwaukee’s 11-1 trouncing of the Rockies.

– Howie Kendrick went 3 for 5 with two dingers, three RBI and three runs scored in the Halos’ 11-10 win over Rangers in 11 innings. Josh Hamilton also hit his 21st home run in the loss.

Thursday Morning Headliners: Cubs, Sox rolling again

– With their 5-1 victory over the Reds, the Cubs appear to be back on track. Ace Carlos Zambrano gave up just one run on one hit over eight innings of work, striking out five in the process. Chicago has now won three in a row.

– The Cubs’ cross town rivals the White Sox are also steamrolling along. The Chi Sox picked up their fourth straight victory on Wednesday, topping the Royals 7-6. Carlos Quentin homered twice while driving in four RBI and scoring three runs. Chicago now has a 3.5 game lead over the Twins in the AL Central.

– Speaking of the Twins, the Red Sox gave them the beating of a lifetime at Fenway. Boston finished with 23 hits in an 18-5 romp as Josh Beckett won his ninth game of the year. You know things are going your way when your backup catcher (Kevin Cash), who’s hitting .241 on the season by the way, hits his first two dingers of the year in the same game.

– The Indians continue to freefall, dropping their 10th straight in an 8-6 loss to Detroit. The Tribe jumped out to a 6-0 lead over six innings, but the Tigers chipped away and in the bottom of the ninth, Miguel Cabrera hit a walk off home run off reliever Jensen Lewis.

– The Mets shutout the Giants for the second straight night, as Johan Santana finally picked up another win in New York’s 5-0 victory. Before Wednesday’s victory, Santana had gone six straight starts without a win. He lasted five innings, yielding just three hits against San Francisco.

Wednesday Morning Headliners: Cubs acquire Harden

MLB:

– The Chicago Cubs added a significant piece to their starting rotation Tuesday, acquiring Oakland A’s pitcher Rich Harden in a six-player swap that also netted the club Chad Gaudin.

– Speaking of the Cubs, Ryan Dempster continued his domination at Wrigley on Tuesday, striking out five and yielding just one earned run over 7.0 innings of work in Chicago’s 7-3 win over the Reds. Dempster is now a staggering 10-0 at home, although he’s yet to win a game on the road thus far.

– The Rays have dropped two in a row after being shutout by the Yankees, 5-0. Andy Pettitte won his 10th game of the year, allowing no runs off four hits in 8.0 innings of work. With the Red Sox’ 6-5 win over Minnesota, Tampa is just 3.0 games up on Boston in the AL East.

– Miguel Cabrera had himself quite a night, going 4 for 4 with two dingers, three RBI and two runs scored in the Tigers’ 9-2 thrashing of Cleveland. Ivan Rodriguez and Marcus Thames also homered for Detroit.

– SI cover jinx anyone? The Giants’ young phenom Tim Lincecum was 10-1 entering Tuesday night, but was roughed up by the Mets, allowing four runs on nine hits over six innings. New York shutout San Fran 7-0.

NFL:

– Brandon Marshall’s troubles continue. Apparently the Broncos’ receiver was ticketed by Denver police for more traffic violations in June.

– Plaxico Burress vows to be on time for Giants’ training camp.

Cubs acquire A’s Rich Harden, Chad Gaudin

The Cubs officially answered the Brewers’ recent acquisition of pitcher C.C. Sabathia by nabbing a quality starter of their own. Chicago acquired A’s pitchers Rich Harden and Chad Gaudin in exchange for RHP Sean Gallagher, OF Matt Murton, INF Eric Patterson and C Josh Donaldson.

The Cubs weren’t scared off by the fact that Harden has had six stints on the disabled list over the past three-plus seasons.

“Obviously there’s some risk involved,” Hendry told Chicago reporters. “He’s missed some time but he’s never had any surgery. We did extensive work with their doctors.”
Harden said he was excited about joining the Cubs but said his emotions were mixed.

“I think it’ll be good,” Harden said. ” They’re a good team and they’ve got a chance to do something special. It’s tough leaving here at the same time. I’ve been here my whole career.”

Gaudin, expected to join Chicago’s bullpen, was less than thrilled in May when the A’s switched him from starting to relieving. He left McAfee Coliseum on Tuesday before reporters could find him for comment.

This was a tremendous move for the Cubs. Harden is a stud when healthy and Chicago sorely needed another arm in their rotation. Harden, Carlos Zambrano, Ryan Dempster and Ted Lilly make up a terrific starting four and certainly one that would allow them to make a deep postseason run if they continue to build on their first half success.
