More leagues busting media outlets’ balls

First the NFL wanted to limit websites unassociated from the league from using more than 45 seconds worth of video coverage a day, now MLB is shutting out ESPN from doing live coverage at the All-Star Game on Tuesday night.

Baseball executives told ESPN that it must pare its broadcast efforts from AT&T Park in San Francisco, where the All-Star Game is being held. So, most coverage will be done out of ESPN’s headquarters in Bristol, Conn., rather than having “Baseball Tonight” and a portion of “SportsCenter” originate from California as planned.

Basically, MLB is pissed at ESPN for broadcasting what players made each All-Star team on its selection show a week ago, before TBS (who owned the rights) had the chance to.

I get why the league is upset with the ESPN, seeing as how TBS probably paid a ton of money to be the first network to announce who made each team. However, doesn’t MLB understand that the All-Star Game is supposed to be about the players and the fans? It’s not about who gave the league the most money to break the news first or who should have the prime position to do broadcasts. ESPN is highly regarded – for better or worst – as the “worldwide leader in sports”, and now you’re going to tell them that they can’t even broadcast live from the park? How fair is it to fans that you’re limiting the coverage to just one station?

These leagues that are trying to crack down on media coverage because they’re selling to the highest bidder or forcing us as fans to only go to league-sponsored websites is total crap.

“The Ego” expected to leave ESPN

Larry Brown Sports is reporting longtime broadcaster and host Dan Patrick is expected to leave ESPN Radio soon.

Expect Dan Patrick to announce soon…maybe within hours…that he’s leaving BSPN to pursue other radio and television opportunities. Apparently Patrick feels that his exposure is at it highest…and that this is a perfect time to branch out on his own. Don’t be surprised to see Patrick resurface first with a syndicated radio show.

While it’s hard to disagree that Patrick is a savvy vet in the radio world, I can’t stand his ego at times. I appreciate that he doesn’t give into pompous athletes like Terrell Owens, but apparently it takes one to interview one if you catch my drift. His show is still entertaining – especially with all the guests he’s able to pull down – but man, he loves himself.

As far as Patrick’s next move, SPORTSbyBROOKS has some humorous suggestions, including one that entails charcoal.

A-Rod’s wife wears message at Yankee Stadium: “F**k you”

Alex Rodriguez’s wife, Cynthia, wore a shirt with the words, “F**k you” to the Yankees-A’s game yesterday, igniting a bit of a firestorm according to the NY Post.

“I mean this kid was right in back of Cynthia – his nose must have been about 4 inches away from the words ‘F- – – you.’ “

According to the article, she wasn’t even kicked out of the game, despite a team policy that prohibits any banners or signs that are not in “good taste”.

While I think it’s wrong for kids to have to be subjected to profanity at what should be a harmless baseball game, Deadspin.com has a point in insinuating it’s not like “F**k you” has never been shouted at Yankee Stadium. The bigger question is what the hell was she thinking? First and foremost, she had her kid on her lap and “F**k you” printed on the back of her shirt and secondly, you’re married to a celebrity, so why wear it? Tell me what point you’re trying to make while wearing something like that. Come on lady, you’re a freaking idiot.

Blow up ESPN now!

Denver Post columnist and frequent ESPN commenter Woody Paige and host Jay Crawford are being sued by a woman who is claiming the two repeatedly sexually harassed her while she did makeup for the show “Cold Pizza”. The woman has also said she was fired because she complained about the two’s sexual advances to management.

Ragone said Paige, a columnist with The Denver Post, repeatedly made vulgar remarks about her appearance. Crawford, she said, made unwanted sexual advances, told her she only got the job because of her looks and contributed to a locker-room atmosphere by making disparaging remarks about another hair stylist.

You know when there are those certain franchises in sports that have a ton of veteran players who aren’t playing up to their bloated contracts anymore and need to just blow it up and rebuild? Well, that’s ESPN right now, and I’m not even basing it off of this recent issue (they could both be innocent for all I know). Get rid of Boo-Yah Center, Chris “I’m a shell of my former self” Berman, Paige’s tired act, Skip Bayless, loud mouth Stephen A. Smith and possibly the worst of them all when he’s really on his game, Sean Salisbury.

Seriously, what does that network bring to the table anymore? They’ve tried so hard to get “in your face” with sports coverage that I can’t even stomach to watch even 10 minutes of SportsCenter anymore. I’d keep Chris Mortensen, John Clayton (obviously not for looks), Peter Gammons, Mike Tirico, Michael Wilbon, maybe Tom Jackson and then start over.
