TE Stevens to miss 6 weeks

Seahawks’ TE Jerramy Stevens tore his meniscus in his left knee during practice. It is the same knee that was surgically repaired less than four months ago.

The team said Stevens is expected to miss the next six weeks, including the start of the regular season.

He was injured trying to catch a pass from quarterback Matt Hasselbeck. The pass was broken up by linebacker Leroy Hill and Stevens fell to the ground with the brunt of his weight landing on his knees.

He hobbled off the field and was examined by trainers while sitting on a cart. He was later taken back to the locker room on the cart.

“It looked like he got tripped up a little bit … and he just kind of came down on his knee. That’s what it looked like to me,” coach Mike Holmgren said. “We’ll see it on film, but he just came down on it and the knee bore the weight of his body.”

This is definitely a setback for Stevens, who came into his own last season. Fantasy-wise, he was shaping up to be a good late-round sleeper. He still could go on to have a good year, but there will be lingering questions about the knee.

This is also a blow to the Seattle offense as a whole. Stevens served as a nice outlet for Matt Hasselbeck and the two developed a nice rapport over the second half of last season, which continued into the playoffs, where Stevens caught 11 passes for 104 yards and two touchdowns in three playoff games.

K-Rob arrested for DWI

Koren Robinson was arrested Tuesday night on suspicion of drunken driving.

Robinson, 26, is in his second season with the Vikings, and he faces a potential yearlong suspension from the NFL because of past substance abuse issues.

Robinson supposedly cleaned up his act in preparation for his role as Minnesota’s #1 WR. Now it looks like he may be suspended for the season.

From a fantasy football perspective, his is a golden opportunity for Troy Williamson. By most accounts, he’s had a good preseason and is poised for a breakout year. While he would have benefited from the attention K-Rob would have attracted, he will garner some extra targets if Robinson isn’t on the field.

Not so fast! Suggs fails physical

The Jets trade for Suggs is now void because the running back failed his physical.

“In terms of trade, Lee Suggs failed his physical,” said [head coach Eric]Mangini. “Pursuant to any trade that is now void, Derrick Strait will be coming back here today and Lee will return to the Browns. It’s just one of those things that happens. We had a process in place medically to make sure that every player we bring in can be able to perform and it’s pretty standard operating procedure.

Suggs inability to get healthy has cost him a shot at the starting job in New York. The Jets’ search for a RB will continue – will they make another run at Chris Brown?

Leinart last first round pick to sign

Arizona finally reached an agreement with their future starting quarterback Matt Leinart on Monday.

Leinart agreed to a six-year deal that could bring the rookie up to $51 million. He will get around $14 million in guaranteed money, which seemed to have been the main issue for Leinart’s hold out.

The two-week hold started to get ugly as head coach Dennis Green criticized Matt Leinart and his representatives for rejecting “a more than generous” offer from the Cardinals.

Green’s criticism focused on what the coach said was far more than a 10th pick normally would receive. A grumpy Green was upset with the perception that Cardinals owner Bill Bidwill was being cheap.

“I’ve been here two years,” Green said. “All I know is when we set out a strategy, whether it be signing Bertrand Berry or drafting Larry Fitzgerald, Bill Bidwill has helped us get that player.”

One of the real issues Green has been upset is the fact that he has to stand by and watch Kurt Warner’s backup Jon Navarre throw two interceptions in Arizona’s first preseason game.

The deal is finally done, however, and now Leinart, Green and the Cardinals to mend fences and get down to work.

Jets trade for Suggs

In their quest for Curtis Martin insurance, the Jets have decided to trade for Lee Suggs.

When healthy, Suggs (6-0, 213) was productive for the Browns. He rushed for 186 yards on 26 carries and 2 scores during a win over Cincinnati on Dec. 28, 2003. But he battled numerous injuries during his tenure with the team.

As the article states, Suggs has been great when he’s healthy, but he just hasn’t been able to stay on the field. If Curtis Martin is out of the picture, Suggs is probably the most talented back on the Jets’ roster and he will have the opportunity to fight for playing time.

Fantasy-wise, this move obviously hurts C-Mart’s stock, and is yet another indicator that the team isn’t all that confident that he’ll be able to play this season.

In return, the Jets recieved third-year cornerback Derrick Strait.
