RBs Gore, C. Taylor injured

Frank Gore broke a bone in his right hand during a non-contact ball-handling drill, and may not play in the preseason. HC Mike Nolan said that he will be ready to go by the end of the preseason.

Chester Taylor was carted off the practice field this morning with a shoulder/arm injury. The specifics of the injury are still unknown.

Fantasy impact: I wouldn’t worry too much about Gore’s injury. If he’s ready for the regular season, he should be OK. However, he may not be in the best of shape come September, so you may want to ratchet down his projections a bit. If Taylor’s injury turns out to be serious, this is obviously a huge boost for Adrian Peterson. If Taylor is out, Peterson suddenly becomes a second or third round pick.

8/1 Update: Taylor’s X-rays were negative and the injury was diagnosed as a forearm bruise, which is good news for Taylor and bad news for Peterson’s draft stock.

Johnson prepared for hold out

Kansas City Chiefs running back Larry Johnson is apparently ready to hold out of training camp if he doesn’t receive a new contact.

Before criticizing yet another athlete threatening to hold out for more money, consider that Johnson may be on point. He’s set to make only $1.7 million this year, which is well below market value for a guy that is still only 27, and handles the full running load every season. When you factor in how the Chiefs are normally pretty thrifty, Johnson has the right to find out whether the team he virtually carried on his back to the postseason last year is committed to him.

Mini camp notes 5/7

Washington Redskins
The ‘Skins signed Derrick Blaylock Sunday, formally of the Jets, to compete for the third running back spot behind Clinton Portis and Ladell Betts. Speaking of Portis, the Washington Times reports offensive coordinator Al Saunders doesn’t know when his starting tailback will be ready for camp. Portis is still recovering from hand and shoulder injuries from ’06 and the early indication is that he might not be ready until training camp or later.

Oakland Raiders
The San Francisco Chronicle speculates Dominic Rhodes will be the opening week starter at tailback, not Lamont Jordan. It’s still early however, and it’s worth noting new head coach Lane Kiffin used four different running backs in his offense at USC last year. Rhodes, Jordan and rookie fourth round pick Michael Bush will all get looks through mini and training camps. And why not, the Raiders offense was abysmal last year; might as well find the right back. In other Oakland news, defensive end Derrick Burgess reported to mini camp, even though there were rumors he might hold out.

Chicago Bears
According to the Washington Post, the Bears are shopping defensive end Alex Brown. By drafting LSU safety LaRon Landry with their first pick in the draft, the Redskins failed to address their lack of pass-rush and could be a team interested in the former Pro Bowler Brown. Chicago is apparently after a second rounder in exchange for Brown, which is a realistic demand as far as Washington is concerned considering its always ready to part with draft picks.

Miami Dolphins
After rumors circulated that head coach Cam Cameron was upset about his weight, running back Ronnie Brown is back down to 234 pounds. His playing weight last year was 232, so obviously he wasn’t too overweight. The Miami Herald reports Cameron is encouraged what he’s seen out of Brown thus far and has high expectations for him heading into ’07.

Will Williamson even make Vikings’ roster in ’07?

NFL.com’s Adam Schefter speculates former first round pick Troy Williamson of the Minnesota Vikigns might not even make it out of training camp this year after the team selected fellow wide receivers Sidney Rice, Aundrae Allison and Chandler Williams in last weekend’s draft.

Williamson was the player the Vikings selected seventh overall in the ‘05 draft after trading Randy Moss. He’s mostly been a complete dud, failing to register a touchdown last year or even compiling 1,000 receiving yards in two combined seasons. Just one more example of why teams need to seriously re-think taking a receiver in the first ten picks in the first round.
