Running back news

– The Jets’ Thomas Jones limped off the field Monday during practice with an apparent calf or ankle injury. It doesn’t appear to be serious, however.

I watched Jones’ performance against the Falcons last Friday and I was very impressed. He hit the holes quickly and ran hard. Leon Washington is a sure bet to take away some of Jones’ touches, but it appears that Jones is going to be the Jets’ goal line back.

Warrick Dunn participated in all of the Falcons’ drills Monday after recently having back surgery. He spent time with the second team, however, with Jerious Norwood getting first team carries.

Dunn still isn’t a solid fantasy pick this year, not by a long shot. He really slowed at the end of last year and his TD numbers have been awful the past three years, especially when Atlanta still had T.J. Duckett. Norwood might be worth a look as a third back, but I’d still throw caution to the wind. He’s lighting in a bottle and a threat to break a long run on every carry, but he’s still trying to get used to the Falcons’ new “power running game”.

LenDale White is likely to start this Friday for the Titans after backing up Chris Brown last week.

White’s had an up and down offseason, first being overweight and then battling injuries. However, the Titans are dying for this kid to break out and he’d be a nice goal line threat with how hard he runs. This weekend would be a great time to see how Tennessee uses him if it gets near the end zone.

Warning: Crumpler’s knee ailing

Tight end fantasy warning: the Falcons’ Alge Crumpler is banged up and might be worth a pass in your upcoming drafts. He had his knee scoped in the offseason and although he has taken it easy thus far in training camp (he’s only participated in a handful of practices and even then, he hasn’t done much apparently), he’s still suffering some discomfort.

Crumpler has been one of the best fantasy tight end options over the years, but this year he’s got trouble written all over him. Forget the injury setback for a second and just think about the Falcons current quarterback situation, which is Joey Harrington. Complain about Michael Vick’s accuracy all you want, but he has always found away to get the ball into the hands of Algernon Darius Crumpler. But with no Vick and now an injury setback, I’d take a long hard look at other tight end options.

Obviously keep an eye on him in preseason, but if he doesn’t play in any exhibition game, the writing might be on the wall.

Culpepper off the market

The Oakland Raiders, unsure about first overall pick JaMarcus Russell’s contract status, signed recently released quarterback Daunte Culpepper to a one-year deal.

Culpepper will now compete with Andrew Walter and Josh McCown for the rights to be killed on Sundays behind that pathetic excuse the Raiders call an offensive line. Fantasy owners stay far, far away. If you thought he looked shaky last year in Miami on that bum knee, wait till you see him line up under center behind this line. Although if he’s healthy, it’s not like the guy can’t compete in this league.
