Sleeper of the Week: Week 10

Last week’s sleeper, J.P. Losman, had a pretty nice game against the Bengals, throwing for 295 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT. He also rushed for 21 yards on four carries. That’s 19.9 points in a high performance scoring system. Not bad for a guy who was readily available on most waiver wires heading into the weekend.

This week’s sleeper is…

Justin Fargas, Raiders
Fargas appears to have overtaken LaMont Jordan as the feature back in Oakland. He has played well in the last few games, but this week he has a sneaky good matchup against the Bears, who are 26th in the league against the run. Expect 70-100 total yards and a score.

Week 10 Preview

Every week, I highlight a few players to start and a few players to sit at each position. I’m a firm believer in starting your studs, so I won’t tell you about how Carson Palmer or LaDainian Tomlinson has a tough matchup – just go ahead and start them. I’ll focus on the borderline guys – players you’ll only start under the right circumstances. It’s important to note that depending on your roster and situation, you may not be able to follow these recommendations. For example, if I suggest you bench a solid starter like Ben Roethlisberger, only do so if you have a clearly better option on your bench.

START ‘EM

QB: J.P. Losman and Damon Huard both have nice matchups this week against the Dolphins and Broncos, respectively. Each defense is fairly stingy in yards allowed, but they’ve both given up 15 pass TD this season…Ben Roethlisbeger is a must start against a Browns defense that has allowed a staggering 277 yards and 2.5 TD to opposing QBs this season…Kurt Warner (vs. DET), Steve McNair (vs. CIN) and Vince Young (vs. JAX) also have good matchups.

RB: Cedric Benson has been suspect, but he has a great matchup against the Raiders this week. Oakland has yielded an average of 153 yards and 1.5 TD on the ground thus far this season…Edgerrin James has a nice matchup against the Lions. They aren’t bad against the run, but opposing RBs have been able to have success catching the ball out of the backfield against Detroit…DeShaun Foster has a pretty good matchup against the Falcons, who have allowed 125 rushing yards per game thus far.

WR: Derrick Mason is a must start against the Bengals, who are tied for last in the league in pass TD allowed (20)…Santonio Holmes and Hines Ward are both worth a start against the Browns, who just can’t stop the pass…Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin face the Lions, who despite a good showing against the Bears last week, have been unable to defend the pass consistently this season…Donald Driver and Greg Jennings are both worth a start as they face a Vikings defense that is great against the run but pretty bad against the pass.

SIT ‘EM

QB: Phillip Rivers has a tough matchup against the Colts and should be benched if there is a better option available…Brian Griese faces a stingy Oakland defense that has only given up 179 yards and 0.9 pass TD this season…David Garrard (@ TEN) and Alex Smith (@ SEA) should also be avoided.

RB: Jamal Lewis may find the going tough against the Steelers who have the league’s fourth best run defense and have allowed a league low two rushing TD this season…Rudi Johnson and Kenny Watson look like bad starts against the Ravens, who are much more vulnerable to the pass than they are the run…Expect a quiet game out of Maurice Jones-Drew and Fred Taylor as they face the Titans, who have the league’s best run defense.

WR: It would probably be wise to shy away from Chris Chambers and Vincent Jackson this week as the Colts defense is quite tough against the pass…Bernard Berrian and Muhsin Muhammad should be benched against the Raiders…Roddy White doesn’t have a very good matchup against the Panthers, who have allowed just 0.9 pass TD per game this season.

Larry Johnson out for season?

MyFox in Denver is reporting that Larry Johnson will miss the remainder of the season with a broken right foot.

This was confirmed by a source within the Chiefs organization with direct knowledge of the situation.

According to the Chiefs initially, Johnson had suffered a mid-foot sprain in the fourth quarter of last Sunday’s 33-22 loss to the Packers. However, it was later determined that Johnson had suffered a fracture.

According to the source, Johnson is seeking a second opinion on the injury. He arrived at the Chief’s practice facility on crutches Tuesday.

It’s important to note that neither the team nor Johnson has confirmed this report, so hold onto him until that happens. In the meantime, put in your waiver wire requests for Priest Holmes, who will get the bulk of the carries in LJ’s place. Kolby Smith also figures to see some time.

I guess all that talk about LJ breaking down this season wasn’t just idle speculation. It’s a shame – he was just hitting his stride.

Waiver Wire Watch: Week 10

Every week, I highlight a few players that you should target in waivers. I’ll use the ESPN league data when filtering players, so the only players eligible for discussion here are those that are available on the waiver wire of at least 40% of ESPN’s leagues. I’ll list each player’s percentage-owned after their name so you have an idea of how available they are in leagues around the country. I’ll always try to talk about a player or two that are available in 90% of leagues for those of you in 12-team leagues or leagues with big rosters.

QUARTERBACKS

Surprisingly, Brian Griese (39.7) didn’t put up very good numbers against the Lions, but the way the Detroit defense played against Denver, maybe the Lions aren’t so bad after all. In five starts, Griese is averaging 282 yards and 1.8 TD, but has tossed six interceptions in the last three weeks…David Garrard (33.1) is optimistic about playing in week 10 against the Titans, but at this point he should be considered a backup…Kurt Warner (31.5) had a very tough matchup against the Bucs, but has the Lions, Bengals, 49ers and Browns coming up the next four weeks, so he should be able to be productive. If you’re desperate for a starter at QB, Warner is worth a look given those matchups…Damon Huard (17.2) got off to a slow start against Green Bay, but finished with 213 yards, two TD and two INT. What’s worrisome is that there was a feeling that he could be benched for Brodie Croyle at any time. He doesn’t have an easy upcoming schedule, but you could do worse at QB…J.P. Losman (14.0) had a nice game against Cincy, but that goes for just about every QB that has faced the Bengals this season. This week the Bills face the Dolphins, which is a mediocre matchup for Losman. In week 11, he faces the Patriots, so Losman is only an option in deep leagues…Cleo Lemon (8.6) has the Bills and Eagles the next two weeks and has put up fairly solid numbers in his last three games, though he could be benched for John Beck (0.6) if he doesn’t play well…Kellen Clemens (7.6) posted nice stats against a good Redskins defense, throwing for 226 yards and a score, while rushing for 48 yards. He has Pittsburgh and Dallas after the bye, so it’s hard to be optimistic about his short-term prospects…If you’re really desperate, Sage Rosenfels (3.9) might against the Saints after the Texans’ week 10 bye. It looks like Matt Schaub may be out for a bit and Rosenfels has been decent in his place, throwing for 216 yards and 2.0 TD over the last three games…Patrick Ramsey (0.1) would fill in for Jay Cutler if he misses any time with a sore leg. Cutler’s MRI showed that there was no fracture in his fibula, so there’s a chance that Cutler will play.

RUNNING BACKS

Brandon Jackson (42.3) and Vernand Morency (40.5) will see some more work if Ryan Grant (31.6) is out. Grant suffered a concussion and his status for week 10 is unknown. The Packer backfield has been in flux all season so it’s tough to count on any of these guys…Justin Fargas (19.9) should be the top pickup this week. He had 23 carries for 104 yards and a score against the Texans and it appears he is RB1 in Oakland…In PPR leagues, Kevin Faulk (20.8) is worth a roster spot. He has 10 catches over the last two weeks and with Sammy Morris out for the year, he’ll be the primary backup to Laurence Maroney, who has a tendency to miss games due to injury…Ron Dayne (13.3) can’t be trusted, but as long as Ahman Green is out, he is first in line for carries in Houston. He had a nice game against a poor Raiders defense and has the Saints and Browns after the team’s week 10 bye…Priest Holmes (12.0) is back and it looks like he may get the start this week now that Larry Johnson is dinged up…Leonard Weaver (0.5) may get more work in the Seahawks’ offensive attack as it looks like head coach Mike Holmgren intends to employ an attack that focuses more on the pass.

WIDE RECEIVERS

Bobby Engram (58.4) continues to impress. On Sunday, he caught 14 passes for 139 yards and a score in a game where he was supposed to take a back seat to D.J. Hackett…Roddy White (54.0) continues to be the main WR threat in Atlanta, though erratic QB play has hurt his numbers. Still, he’s on pace for 1170 yards this season…Andre Davis (41.9) caught his third TD of the season on Sunday, and aside from a bad game against the Chargers, he’s been pretty solid this season…Joe Jurevicius (41.4) looks like a good pickup in PPR leagues, where he has scored in double figures the past two weeks…Shaun McDonald (40.9) is back in his early season form. As the third or fourth option in Detroit, his numbers may fluctuate week to week, but he’s a nice pickup in PPR leagues…D.J. Hackett (40.2) returned to the field and caught six passes for 58 yards and a score. Deion Branch should return soon, but Hackett is a good start as a WR3…Brandon Stokley (31.6) caught his second TD in three weeks, but his numbers will probably suffer if Jay Cutler misses extended time…Kevin Walter (30.0) had a quiet game after scoring in double digits (in PPR leagues) over the last five weeks. Still, he should retain his starting spot once Andre Johnson returns to the lineup…Reggie Williams (24.1) went nuts against the Saints, catching six passes for 128 yards and a score, but he’s been very inconsistent of late…James Jones (21.1) has caught at least three passes in every game this season, but the Packer WR corps is talented and deep, so his week-to-week numbers will fluctuate and depend largely on whether or not he catches a TD…Chris Henry (14.5) has just been activated and is one of Carson Palmer’s favorite redzone targets. If Chad Johnson misses any time, his value would definitely increase…In deep leagues, Arnaz Battle (10.8) is worth a look in deep PPR leagues. He has caught at least three passes in the last five games…David Patten (7.1) is on fire of late. Over the last four games, he has caught 4.8 catches for 83 yards and 0.3 TD. It looks like he’s going to fill that WR2 vacancy in New Orleans…Sidney Rice (1.7) has terrific athleticism, but his numbers suffer due to the team’s poor play at QB.

TIGHT ENDS

David Lee (38.7) isn’t going to set the world on fire, but he has caught at least three passes in every game this season and showed some speed on a long catch against the Chiefs this Sunday…Eric Johnson (32.1) continues to be involved in the Saints’ passing game, though he’s not much of a threat to score. He’s a backup in PPR leagues…Tony Scheffler (17.6) caught six passes for 46 yards on Sunday, marking his third solid game in a row.
