      Roy Williams trade makes little sense for Cowboys

      Roy WilliamsAdam Schefter of the NFL Network is reporting that the Detroit Lions have traded wide receiver Roy Williams to the Dallas Cowboys for a first, third and sixth round pick.

      But ESPN.com’s Ed Werder reports that the deal will not include the Cowboys first round pick. The trade would involve multiple draft picks but would not involve the Cowboys’ first-round pick, a source told ESPN.com.

      The Cowboys are also trying to negotiate a long-term deal with Williams before completing the deal. Williams has expressed unhappiness playing for the winless Lions and can become a free agent after the season unless the team places the franchise tag on him.

      In the battle of media giants, I would have to say the NFL Network has the leg up on ESPN considering it’s a league-owned network. But my man Ed Werder eats, sleeps and breaths Dallas Cowboys football for ESPN so I wouldn’t necessarily shoot his information down.

      Regardless of the pending compensation, this trade doesn’t make a ton of sense from the Cowboys’ standpoint. Fans will go crazy talking about an unstoppable offense that features Williams, Terrell Owens and Jason Witten, but the fact of the matter is that there’s only one ball to go around. Do you really think T.O. is going to be thrilled now that he has to share looks with another receiving target? Doubtful. And if the ‘Boys do sign Williams to a long term deal, they would have spent a ton of money at just one position (an overrated position to boot). Owens is already scheduled to make $8.9 million in 2009, $10.7 million in 2010 and $10.2 million in 2011.

      This makes more sense for the Lions. They probably weren’t going to be able to re-sign Williams to a long-term deal, so why not get as much as they could for him now? And with Matt Millen gone, maybe now they’ll actually get some kind of value for the draft picks they acquired.

      Roy Williams traded to Cowboys

      Jerry Jones has said all along that he wanted to get a playmaker opposite Terrell Owens. Well, now he’s got one.

      The Lions have traded WR Roy Williams to the Cowboys for a first, third and sixth round pick. The Cowboys also receive a seventh-round pick from the Lions in 2009.

      This is an obvious downgrade for Patrick Crayton and Miles Austin, who now move to WR3 and WR4, respectively. It also may be a downgrade for Jason Witten, who will likely see fewer balls thrown his way.

      Pacman Jones suspended at least four games

      So much for the rehabilitation of Pacman Jones.

      Dallas Cowboys cornerback Adam “Pacman” Jones has been suspended for at least four games for his most recent violation of the league’s personal conduct policy, the NFL announced Tuesday.

      In announcing his decision, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said Jones’ “disturbing pattern of behavior was clearly inconsistent with the conditions I set for your continued participation in the NFL.”

      Goodell will determine the final length of Jones’ suspension following the Cowboys’ Week 11 game against Washington on Nov. 16, the league said.

      In his latest transgression, Jones was involved in an alcohol-related physical altercation at a Dallas hotel on Oct. 8 that resulted in hotel employees calling the police.

      Anyone who watched HBO’s “Hard Knocks,” which followed the Cowboys through their training camp, probably thought that Jones had turned a corner in his life. We witnessed Jones’ happiness when he got the news that Goodell had reinstated him, but now the honeymoon is over and Jones is acting like his old self.

      Lions to put Kitna on IR

      It’s all right there in the title. The Lions have apparently decided that Jon Kitna’s season is over.

      With no trades in the works, the Lions decided this morning to place quarterback Jon Kitna on injured reserve. The decision should be announced later today.

      Kitna suffered a back injury in the first half of the Lions’ 34-7 loss to Chicago two weeks ago. He did not play last week against Minnesota and did not travel with the team.

      Kitna, who has muscular damage in his lower back, finishes the season with 758 yards passing, five touchdowns and five interceptions. He never seemed to buy fully into new coordinator Jim Colletto’s offense, and, with one year left on his contract, may have played his last game as a Lion.

      Kitna was always a fairly reliable fantasy option, but now that his season is finished, it looks like the beginning of the Dan Orlovsky era…for now. This has to be a slight downgrade for Calvin Johnson and a big downgrade for Roy Williams. Calvin played pretty well against the Vikings, and young QBs have a tendency to lock onto their favorite target and throw to him over and over, which means that Roy may be left out in the cold.

      Larry Johnson faces simple-assault charges

      According to The Kansas City Star, Chiefs’ running back Larry Johnson faces simple-assault charges stemming from an incident that occurred in February of this year.

      Larry JohnsonJohnson faces a December date in Kansas City Municipal Court on a charge of simple assault. The municipal violation, filed early last month, stemmed from an incident on Feb. 24, 2008, in which a 26-year-old woman accused Johnson, 28, of using his open hand to push the left side of her head, according to court and police documents obtained by The Kansas City Star.

      A police report supporting the charge alleged that the woman and a friend were walking through the club when Johnson moved through the crowd toward them and pushed the woman, saying, “… don’t touch me.”

      If convicted, Johnson could be sentenced to up to six months in jail and a $500 fine.

      Johnson emerged from his two prior legal incidents without convictions. In 2003, he was accused of aggravated assault and misdemeanor domestic battery for allegedly brandishing a gun during an argument with a former girlfriend.

      Those charges were dropped the following year after he agreed to enter a domestic-violence diversion program.

      In 2005, a woman accused Johnson of pulling her to the exit of a nightspot on the Country Club Plaza and pushing her to the floor after an argument.

      That woman later changed her story and insisted that she did not want to press charges against Johnson. Prosecutors dropped the assault charge after she missed three court hearings.

      Option A: Considering his track record, the woman in this most recent assault altercation is probably telling the truth when she says Johnson pushed her.

      Option B: This is just another person trying to get a quick payday from an athlete.

      Option C: I don’t know what to believe and quite frankly I don’t care. All I know is that I’ve got a fantasy game to win this Sunday and that goofy Larry Johnson better be in my lineup.
