NBA: Eye on the standings

The NBA season is about a week old and there are only three undefeated teams left: Utah, NO/OKC, and Phlly. You read that right. Miami, Phoenix, Dallas and Denver are a combined 2-9. Sure, it’s early, but it’s interesting to see who is getting off to a good start and who isn’t.

Let’s look at the Jazz…Carlos Boozer has been a monster, averaging 20.7 points and 15.0 rebounds through the first three games. Mehmet Okur has also played well, averaging 17.3 points and 9.3 boards, allowing the Jazz to overcome sketchy play from Andrei Kirilenko. Deron Williams has played pretty well, averaging 12.7 points and 6.7 assists, but has yet to make a three after making 1.1 per game last season. If they can get good play from off guard (C.J. Miles is currently starting there and is shooting 55% thus far) then the Jazz should make the playoffs and could win the division. The 3-0 record isn’t a sham, either. They’ve got wins against the Rockets and the Suns.

How about the Hornets? They beat Boston and Indiana on the road before beating the Rockets in their home opener. Surprisingly, the Hornets are undefeated despite suspect play from free agent acquisition Peja Stojakovic, who has shot just 33.3% from the field and is averaging only 11.7 ppg. David West is building on his breakout season in 2005-06, and is posting 20.0 points (on 49% shooting) and 6.7 boards. Chris Paul continues to improve and is currently second in the league in assists with 10.7 per game. (Steve Nash is first with 11.8 per.) The Hornets play the Warriors twice before facing the Blazers, so they could be 6-0 when they face the Clippers on 11/12.

The biggest surprise is Philly, who faced a lot of questions this offseason with all the rumors swirling about potential trades involving Allen Iverson. Anyone worried about AI’s commitment to the team can lay aside those fears. He’s averaging 34.0 points, 9.7 assists and is shooting 49.3% from the field. The Sixers have winnable games against the Pacers, Raptors, Nuggets and Sonics, before facing the Suns in Phoenix on 11/17. The next night, they play the Clippers in L.A.

Of these three teams, the Jazz have the best chance at a division title. The Northwest is pretty weak and the Nuggets are beatable. It’s highly unlikely that the Southwest division champion will not be a team from Texas, but the Hornets look like a playoff team right now. The Sixers could overtake the Nets for the Atlantic title, but will need some good fortune (and good play from Chris Webber) to do so.

Eye on the scoreboard

Cleveland 88, San Antonio 81
Whether or not LeBron James wants to admit it, this was a statement game for the Cavs, who desperately want to be considered one of the league’s elite teams. They definitely made a statement with this win. In all fairness, the Spurs were coming off an emotional win in Dallas the night before, but they still should be able to handle the Cavs at home if they’re the league’s best team. They struggled mightily from the line, shooting a miserable 18-34, anchored by Tim Duncan’s 9-19 performance. If he continues to shoot like that from the line, it’s going to be a problem for the Spurs. (He did finish with 25 points and 12 rebounds, leading the Spurs in both categories.) LeBron looked great, tallying 35 points and 10 boards, and has proved that he is the best in the league at finishing at the hoop. He needs to do a better job of finishing games, however. And for some reason, he’s still fading away on his long jumpers. It makes sense when he’s driving and rising, but when he’s shooting a wide-open three, I don’t know why he fades. That’s going to lead to inconsistent shooting. Big Z is looking more and more out of place on this team. The demand for a slow 7’3” center has to be decreasing with the league’s movement towards an up-tempo game.

Random Thoughts: I was most surprised by Minnesota’s 112-109 win in Denver, Sacramento’s 89-88 win in Chicago and Utah’s 108-104 win in Phoenix. The Hornets also got a nice win in Indiana, 100-91…Fantasy-wise, the biggest shock is how many points and minutes Quentin Richardson is posting. Through two games, he has 50 points, 15 rebounds and three assists. Of course, it helps that the team released Jalen Rose, who quickly signed with the Suns. Now that should be interesting…T.J. Ford has already made an impact in Toronto, dishing out 18 assists in two games. Throw in 32 points and eight rebounds and you’ve got yourself a point guard.

Spurs, Clippers victorious

There were only two games tonight in the NBA, but they were both good matchups. The Spurs beat the Mavs in Dallas, 97-91, even though Tim Duncan didn’t play very well. It’s early, but San Antonio’s win on the road is a statement. The Spurs found something in Francisco Elson, a seven-foot forward/center whom they signed away from the Denver Nuggets. He is a tremendous athlete and can run the floor. Against the Mavs, he tallied 12 points, 6 rebounds and blocked two shots in 26 minutes. Look for his role to increase as he gains more experience. With Duncan and Manu Ginobili completely healthy, the Spurs look like the class of the West.

In the other game, the Clippers bounced back from a loss at Phoenix last night to nip the Nuggets, 96-95. Carmelo Anthony was ejected early in the third quarter after drawing two technicals for arguing with the officials, so the Clippers really should have won this game by a larger margin. In truth, they were lucky to escape with a win. Sam Cassell made a bonehead turnover late in the game with his team up one that led to a J.R. Smith dunk. But Cassell is nothing if not crafty, and he drew a foul on the next possession to give the Clippers the win. He finished with 35 points, six rebounds and six assists. On the other hand, Smith is primed for a breakout year as the Nuggets’ starting shooting guard. He led Denver with 21 points and provides the long-range shooting that the Nuggets so desperately need.

On a side note, the NBA should consider giving home court advantage to whomever wins the season series. This would place a bigger emphasis on regular season games and give the players something else to play for. If two teams split the season series, then home court would go to the team with the better record, as it does now. Thoughts?

Couch Potato Alert (10/30)

Get ready for a big week in sports. Week 8 in the NFL wraps up tonight with a good matchup between the Vikings and the Patriots. Then the NBA tips off on Tuesday with alternating doubleheaders on TNT and ESPN the rest of the week. But don’t sleep on the phenomenal Thursday night college football matchup between #3 West Virginia and #5 Louisiville. When the schedule makers drew that one up this summer, I doubt they were expecting a rare Top 5 matchup with National Championship implications.

Is 5-yrs/$52.5 M too much for Kaman?

The short answer…no.

The Clippers signed center Chris Kaman to a contract extension, solidifying a promising young core in the process. Many critics will say that the team overpaid for “The Caveman,” but $10 M is a fair deal for Kaman’s current skills and upside.

Take a quick look at Kaman’s stats:

2003-04: 6.1 ppg, 5.6 rpg, 0.9 bpg, 69.7% FT, 46.0% FG
2004-05: 9.1 ppg, 6.7 rpg, 1.1 bpg, 66.1% FT, 49.7% FG
2005-06: 11.9 ppg, 9.6 rpg, 1.4 bpg, 77.0% FT, 52.3% FG

Aside from a hiccup in his free throw percentage two seasons ago, Kaman progressed in each of the five important categories for a center. The league is trending smaller, but that’s because most teams don’t have another option. They are electing to speed up the tempo rather than have sluggish big men on the roster for no other reason than just to have them. But Kaman doesn’t present that problem. He’s developed a great left hand and several solid moves in the post. Moreover, he’s a hard worker and will continue to improve his game.

Good signing by the Clippers. Maybe Donald Sterling isn’t such a tightwad after all.
