Carmelo’s unimpressive fourth quarter leads to a loss

In his first playoff game as a Knick, Carmelo Anthony posted 15 points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals. That’s not a terrible line, but one look at his crunch time stats — 0-for-3 (all three-pointers) and two turnovers in the final 5:05 — reveals that he did not play well down the stretch. In fact, he was pretty much a no-show in the entire second half, scoring just three points on 1-for-11 shooting (0-5 from 3PT).

Carmelo has to play better if the Knicks are going to win tight games against the grizzled Celtics, who won the game, 87-85.

As bad as Anthony played, Amare Stoudemire was rolling. He posted 28 points (on 12-of-18 shooting) and 11 rebounds, and it’s a mystery why the Knicks didn’t go to him more down the stretch.

Giants’ fan that was beaten placed back into induced coma

An image of Dodger Stadium beating victim Bryan Stow (C) is shown on the scoreboard before a MLB National League baseball game between San Francisco Giants and St. Louis Cardinals in San Francisco, California, April 8, 2011. Stow who drove more than 300 miles from Santa Cruz to Los Angeles to watch his beloved Giants play the Dodgers on Opening Day last week, was attacked and beaten in the parking lot by two men after the game. The 42-year-old paramedic and father of two, who was apparently assaulted because he wore Giants garb, remains in a coma and listed in critical condition at a local hospital. There’s more sad news about Bryan Stow this weekend.

According to report by FOX Sports.com, the 41-year-old Giants fan who was brutally assaulted on March 31 at Dodger Stadium was placed back into a medically induced coma on Saturday due to “a recurrence of seizures” related to his head trauma.

Bryan Stow remains in critical condition, according to Rosa Saca, spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County + University of Southern California Medical Center.

Stow, 42, will be monitored closely for the next few days to see when it may be possible to reduce the medication again, Saca said. Stow sustained possible brain damage in the attack.

I have no idea what Stow’s family is going through but they continue to be in my thoughts. Hopefully Bryan continues to fight and eventually, his family will get to speak to him soon.

It’s a shame that the animals that did this haven’t been caught yet. A reward of at least $120,000 has been promised for information leading to the arrests of the two thugs responsible. Justice needs to be served here, although the more important thing is that Bryan be able to make a recovery.

On a side note, kudos to those who have raised or donated money to help pay for Stow’s medical expenses. The specific numbers aren’t important, but the Giants and Dodgers have raised and donated money, as has pitcher Tim Lincecum. Every little bit helps.

Grizzlies upend Spurs for first playoff win in franchise history

Check out this back and forth in the final minutes of the Grizzlies 101-98 win over the Spurs.

2:27 MEM – Marc Gasol missed two free throws (Grizzlies lead by 4)
2:09 SAS – Matt Bonner made three-pointer (Grizzlies lead by 1)
1:47 MEM – Tony Allen missed two free throws
1:28 SAS – Matt Bonner made three-pointer (Spurs lead by 2)
1:07 MEM – Mike Conley turnover
1:06 SAS – George Hill made two free throws (Spurs lead by 4)
0:56 MEM – Marc Gasol made layup (Spurs lead by 2)
0:31 SAS – Tony Parker missed 16-foot jumper
0:23 MEM – Shane Battier made three-pointer (Grizzlies lead by 1)
0:10 SAS – George Hill missed three-pointer
0:10 MEM – Tony Allen made two free throws (Grizzlies lead by 3)
0:01 SAS – Richard Jefferson missed three-pointer

What’s the point? The wheels almost came off for the Grizzlies after four straight missed free throws and the Conley turnover, but Memphis showed some resiliency and fought back to retake the lead. Typically, if you give the Spurs a four point lead with 1:06 to play, they’re going to close out the win 90% of the time (I’m guessing), so the fact that the Grizzlies fought back to win their first ever postseason game is quite impressive.

San Antonio better get its act together. Without Manu Ginobili, they just aren’t the same team and they need to gut out a win or two to keep themselves afloat until he can get back. The Grizzlies are a very dangerous 8-seed in this situation.

Capps replaces Nathan as Twins’ closer

The Twins have decided to replace Joe Nathan with Matt Capps at closer according to Kelsie Smith via Twitter.

From Rotoworld.com:

Manager Ron Gardenhire and pitching coach Rick Anderson met with Nathan after Saturday’s game — a game in which he blew his second straight save opportunity — and decided it would be a good idea to put him in less stressful situations. It’s the right move, as Nathan simply hasn’t looked like himself thus far. Capps has struggled in his own right his last two outings, but he was pitching well before that and has the tools to succeed in the ninth inning. Assuming his stuff does come around, we would expect Nathan to eventually get his job back, but it’s not a given.

Nathan apparently said that he was hurting the team by trying to close and will attempt to regain his form. Maybe with less pressure and more time to recover from his 2010 Tommy John surgery, he will return to his old position and continue to close out games for the Twins. It wasn’t that long ago that Nathan was viewed as the best closer in the game.

Shogun Rua vs. Forrest Griffin 2 official for UFC Rio

A light heavyweight rematch between Mauricio Rua and Forrest Griffin is set for Brazil this August at UFC 134 according to HeavyMMA.com.

A light heavyweight tilt rematch between Forrest Griffin and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua is set for “UFC Rio.”

UFC president Dana White confirmed the news to MMAFighting.com earlier today.

The two first met back at UFC 76, the event where Rua made his debut with the promotion. The former PRIDE superstar failed to capitalize, however, as he was submitted by Griffin in what was one of the more improbable victories in the history of the UFC.

Since then, Griffin has earned and lost the 205 lb. title, while Rua has done the same. The Brazilian is coming off a technical knockout loss to Jon Jones which lost him the title, while Griffin is still on the road back with consecutive wins over Tito Ortiz and Rich Franklin.

“UFC Rio,” also known as UFC 134, is set for Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on August 27 and features a middleweight title fight between champion Anderson Silva and top contender Yushin Okami.
