Lucky Tennessee escapes with win vs App State

They might want to tone down the volume on this hype video.

The Tennessee Volunteers literally needed a fumble into the end zone in overtime for a lucky TD to defeat Appalachian State tonight. The Vols were ranked 9th in the AP poll heading into the season with the hype machine behind this program in overdrive.

And while you could clearly see the superior talent on the field, the Vols had trouble all night with App State. They needed a missed extra point and a missed field goal by App State along with a lucky fumble recovery to pull this one out.

The Vols will surely drop out of the top ten, but this may be a much-needed wake-up call. Volunteers QB Josh Dobbs needs to use his legs more, as his passing skills won’t lead this team to an SEC title.

It’s easy to make too much of opening weekend games in college football. These are young college kids who don’t get the benefit of any preseason games, so we’ll wait and see before we completely bury Tennessee.

#SmellEm If You Got ‘Em! All-access at the 2016 ESPYS and after-party

I asked Cam Newton to teach me how to dab and this was his response.

In the first 15 minutes at the official after-party of the 2016 ESPYS, I shook Richard Sherman’s hand, met former Lakers’ player/coach Byron Scott and told him he got a raw deal after his recent firing, and got a selfie with former Detroit Pistons “bad boy” John Salley.

As part of the launch for two new spots for the new “Smell ‘Em Who’s Boss” campaign (and two new Old Spice Guys: Swagger Guy and Desperado Guy), Old Spice set me up with full access to the ESPYS and after party.

Urban Meyer – 1; Jim Harbaugh – 0

There was plenty of hype leading up to this game, and frankly it was justified. While Michigan has been a miserable mess against Ohio State since Jim Tressel arrived at the beginning of this millennium, things were poised to become more interesting with the arrival of Jim Harbaugh.

Ohio State is the reigning national champ, and Urban Meyer is now the king of the hill in Columbus, but Harbaugh gave Michigan fans hope.

Many thought it might take a couple of years for Harbaugh to compete with the Buckeyes, but as this season progressed, attitudes started to change. The Buckeyes were sleepwalking through their schedule, while Michigan rolled off three straight shutouts. Suddenly, many of the talking heads started calling Michigan the best team in the Big Ten.

Then Michigan State spoiled some of the hype. They miraculously beat Michigan on a wild final play, and then stunned Ohio State last weekend with some serious defense and an assist from Ohio State’s coaching staff.

Still, this was shaping up to be an epic battle that would kick off a new phase in the iconic rivalry. Would we have another ten-year war reminiscent of Woody and Bo?

Miami and Duke provide another crazy finish

It’s been a pretty crazy year in college football. This play is right up there as one of the craziest, though the Michigan fiasco versus Michigan State still take still takes the cake and was far more important in the playoff picture.

Still, this one will be shown for a long time, and the officials have a lot of explaining to do. On one of the backward passes there was a knee that clearly seemed to be down before the ball was let go.

Also, there were clear block in the back penalties, and the refs initially announced that penalty, only to strangely overturn it later.

The Miami Hurricanes were fortunate and Duke got screwed. But in the big picture it doesn’t matter much.
