The football program at the University of Oklahoma is in rough shape these days. Turns out that the Sooners will have to forfeit all eight of their 2005 wins because two students got paid from a car dealership job in Norman, yet didn’t actually put in any work.

The Sooners went 8-4 and beat Oregon in the Holiday Bowl to end the 2005 season. Records from that season involving quarterback Rhett Bomar and offensive lineman J.D. Quinn must be vacated, the NCAA said, and coach Bob Stoops’ career record will be amended to reflect the forfeitures, dropping it from 86-19 in eight seasons to 78-27.

Seriously, how bad does Stoops and the rest of the ’05 Sooner team want to throw an ass-beating party for Bomar and Quinn right about now? Not only did they get paid for doing nothing, they also botched an entire football season in the process. At least Tulsa and Baylor are happy – whoever said they could never beat OU looks pretty silly right about now.

Indiana University head football coach Terry Hoeppner passed away today at the age of 59. He died due to complications from a brain tumor.

“You just expect someone that’s as tough and competitive as he is to, no matter the obstacle whether it’s cancer or anything else, show up one day,” said the younger Lynch, who coached with Hoeppner at Miami (Ohio) and followed him to Indiana after the 2004 season. “I was just laughing with the guys, telling them that Terry would probably tell us to suck it up, get going and defend ‘The Rock’ because that’s who he was.”

Hoeppner had gone through two brain surgeries in the past 18 months.

Troy Smith not only won the Heisman Trophy, he blew his competition right out of the water. Brady Quinn and Darren McFadden didn’t know what hit them. Smith’s 801 first-place votes, which were the second most ever in the history of the award, were 1,662 points higher than McFadden who finished second. Only O.J. Simpson’s 1,750-point victory in 1968 was more one sided.

Smith’s numbers were incredible this season. He passed for 2,716 yards, finished the season with a 67% competition rate and threw for 30 touchdowns with only five interceptions. But most of all, he has OSU on the brink of an undefeated season and a national championship.

Watching the presentation, you can certainly tell what type of young man Smith is. With his head coach Jim Tressel looking on; Smith spoke very highly of his family and his teammates. Yes, he made a mistake by taking money from a booster. But how many times do we hear of athletes who don’t turn things around for themselves? Smith deserves a ton of credit for learning from a big mistake and turning a negative into a positive.

With all due respect to McFadden (who is well on his way to a Heisman if he doesn’t turn pro too early) Quinn and even Steve Slaton, the 2006 Heisman Trophy is in the right hands.
