IU football coach passes away

Indiana University head football coach Terry Hoeppner passed away today at the age of 59. He died due to complications from a brain tumor.

“You just expect someone that’s as tough and competitive as he is to, no matter the obstacle whether it’s cancer or anything else, show up one day,” said the younger Lynch, who coached with Hoeppner at Miami (Ohio) and followed him to Indiana after the 2004 season. “I was just laughing with the guys, telling them that Terry would probably tell us to suck it up, get going and defend ‘The Rock’ because that’s who he was.”

Hoeppner had gone through two brain surgeries in the past 18 months.

A playoff system makes too much sense

As I sit here watching the Rose Bowl at my in-laws’, it occurs to me: who cares? Despite being the “granddaddy of them all,” the game has no championship implications other than to muddy the waters. If Michigan looks great and Florida lays an egg against Ohio State in the title game, there will be a lot of talk about how there should have been an OSU/Michigan rematch. If USC dominates and the Gators get blown out, I’m sure all the Trojan fans will complain that they got screwed. You don’t hear this kind of talk after a playoff. The championship is settled on the field, right where it should be.

This ongoing BCS mess is befuddling. Everyone I’ve talked to is in favor of a playoff in college football and opposing arguments are mostly half-hearted, devil’s advocate-type responses. (I know it’s not a statistically accurate survey, but the results are overwhelming.) When was the last time there has been such a consensus amongst the sports public without any positive movement whatsoever?

Smith wins well deserved Heisman

Troy Smith not only won the Heisman Trophy, he blew his competition right out of the water. Brady Quinn and Darren McFadden didn’t know what hit them. Smith’s 801 first-place votes, which were the second most ever in the history of the award, were 1,662 points higher than McFadden who finished second. Only O.J. Simpson’s 1,750-point victory in 1968 was more one sided.

Smith’s numbers were incredible this season. He passed for 2,716 yards, finished the season with a 67% competition rate and threw for 30 touchdowns with only five interceptions. But most of all, he has OSU on the brink of an undefeated season and a national championship.

Watching the presentation, you can certainly tell what type of young man Smith is. With his head coach Jim Tressel looking on; Smith spoke very highly of his family and his teammates. Yes, he made a mistake by taking money from a booster. But how many times do we hear of athletes who don’t turn things around for themselves? Smith deserves a ton of credit for learning from a big mistake and turning a negative into a positive.

With all due respect to McFadden (who is well on his way to a Heisman if he doesn’t turn pro too early) Quinn and even Steve Slaton, the 2006 Heisman Trophy is in the right hands.

Couch Potato Alert (12/8)

There are several good matchups in the NFL this weekend, highlighted by the Cowboys/Saints tilt (the BE Game of the Week) brought to us by flex scheduling. That begs the question – why doesn’t the NBA adopt flex scheduling? I’d much rather see the Clippers/Spurs game than the Wizards/Sixers tonight.

If you need a college football fix, the Division I semifinals are today and tomorrow on ESPN2 and ESPN, respectively. Yeah, they actually have a playoff system in Division I football. Pretty weird, eh?

In college hoops, there are three Top 25 matchups, but the biggest game features #6 Texas A&M against #1 UCLA in the John Wooden Classic in Anaheim, CA. Unbelievably, the other game of the Classic (USC/George Washington) will be broadcast in HD, but the UCLA/A&M game will not. Get your act together, CBS!
