Now what?

Listen closely and you can hear the collective heads of the BCS pollsters exploding after both #1 LSU and #2 Cal went down in stunning upsets Saturday. So now what? Boston College and South Florida are the second and third best teams in the country?

Upsets like the ones that occurred the past two weeks just further prove that college football polls are useless until after Week 6 or 7. Let things play out for six or seven weeks before tabbing a team as the best in the country. If the first poll were to come out this weekend, LSU, USC, Oklahoma and Cal would all be in a similar, one-loss situation. The voters could then figure out how a one-loss LSU program stacks up against undefeated teams like Ohio State, South Florida and Boston College.

Two weeks ago the pollsters claimed Wisconsin was the fifth best team in the country. The Badgers then proceeded to lose a tough road game at Illinois and then was smacked in the mouth by Penn State Saturday. Their #5 ranking was a bit much and most fans knew it. By waiting six or seven weeks, maybe the pollsters could save whatever credibility they still have by not making mistakes like they did with Wisconsin.

Could Bush lose his Heisman?

The Reggie Bush-rent scandal that followed him around draft time last year is starting to pick up steam again. Two sources have told YAHOO! Sports that Lloyd Lake, one of the financiers of a failed marketing company called New Era Sports & Entertainment, is ready to testify to the NCAA that Bush and his family received nearly $280,000 in extra benefits while he was enrolled at USC.

Taped conversations between Lake, Bush, Bush’s stepfather LaMar Griffin and others starting in December 2005 now could be examined as evidence by the NCAA. Sources have told Yahoo! Sports that those tapes provide proof of a financial relationship between the New Era financiers and Bush’s family during his days at USC. The tapes could pave the way for significant penalties for USC and ultimately could lead to Bush losing the Heisman Trophy he won in 2005 when he led USC to the national championship game against Texas.

Rules are rules, but don’t take away the kid’s Heisman Trophy, especially if it was his family who mostly took advantage of the situation. He earned that award for his play on the field and it’s not like his family living rent-free helped him get a leg up on the competition. He should keep the award, pay the company back and then be done with it. If he refuses to do that or if Lake has proof that Bush violated stiffer rules, then the NCAA can look into a stiffer punishment.

Good to see Booty can rebound quickly from a loss

What’s a starting quarterback to do after his team suffers a humiliating loss to a 38-point underdog on their home turf? Well, enjoy the rest of the night of course! SPORTSbyBROOKS.com has learned that USC quarterback John David Booty was seen partying at a popular Los Angeles nightclub after the Trojans were upset Saturday night by Stanford.

Among those at the Hollywood hot spot, which is a favorite of Matt Leinart, was quarterback John David Booty, who was observed doing shots and enjoying the company of several members of the fairer sex (not that there’s anything wrong with that!).

USC fans aren’t going to be pleased with this news once they get out from the rock they’re hiding under (which coincidentally is the same rock Michigan fans hid under after the Wolverines lost to Appalachian State).

With the amount of issues NFL teams have had recently with players getting into trouble, I’m sure they’re going to jump at the chance to pay this kid $10 million.

USC repeats 2006 pitfall

They had won five straight games including 35 straight wins at home. They had also won 24 straight Pac 10 games at home, have some of the best talent in the country and were facing a backup quarterback commanding a 1-3 team. And for the second year in a row, USC coughed up a game they shouldn’t have when they were upset by Stanford 24-23 Saturday night.

What a defensive effort by Stanford, intercepting quarterback John David Booty four times, including one in the fourth quarter that preserved the win. You got the feeling that if the Cardinal stuck around long enough, they would pull off the upset – and they didn’t disappoint in a thrilling finish.

The loss put Pete Carroll’s bunch in a familiar situation. Last year the Trojans were tripped up by Oregon State and UCLA, but at least those were road games. This loss to Stanford was at home and to a sophomore quarterback that had previously attempted just three passes.

This upset is just another example of why preseason polls in college football mean next to nothing.

Brian Brohm came back for this?

What the hell happened to Louisville this year? The Cardinals were absolutely worked up and down the field in a 44-35 loss to unranked Utah Friday night. Every year the Big East tries to contend in the polls and every year the conference falters at some point, but UL has to be better than this, right?

Nobody expected the Cardinals defense to be good, but watching them give up close to 600 yards to Utah was staggering. At least Brian Brohm (39 of 58, 467 yards, 4 TDs) continues to put up eye-popping numbers. He still appears to be head and shoulders above any other quarterback in the nation, especially after the lackluster performance Andre Woodson turned in against South Carolina Thursday night.

Stay healthy the rest of the year young Brian. Some NFL team has about $60 mil waiting for you.
