St-Pierre punishes Fitch at UFC 87

Georges St-Pierre was dominant in Saturday’s Welterweight title match against number one contender Jon Fitch. After scoring a knockdown in the first round, St-Pierre didn’t look back, winning every single round handily. It’s clear why he’s considered to be one of the best pound-for-pound fighters that the UFC has to offer. This guy is an amazing athlete, and posesses all the tools to make a tremendous run with the UFC Welterweight Champion. Credit Jon Fitch for going the distance though, the guy took quite a beating but never gave up throughout the fight.

The rest of the card for UFC 87 was solid as well. Brock Lesnar defeated Heath Herring in a bout that solidified Lesnar as a top heavyweight. He made Herring, who’s 6’4”, 250 pounds, look like a child. The most interesting moment in the fight came right after it ended. Lesnar, knowing he had clearly won, taunted Herring by literally pointing and laughing at him. The hometown Lesnar fans loved it. If he had done this in Las Vegas, he would’ve been boo’d out of the building. There’s no room for that crap.

Kenny Florian was also impressive in scoring a victory over Roger Huerta. Florian simply frustrated Huerta by countering anything and everything he threw at him during the fight. Huerta slammed his mouthpiece in disgust as the fight ended. Florian has a bright future in the UFC, that’s for sure.

Overall, it was an excellent UFC pay-per-view. Every fight was entertaining, and that’s pretty rare these days. UFC 88 features Chuck Liddell taking on undefeated light heavyweight Rashad Evans on September 6th.

Fitch and St. Pierre headline UFC 87

Georges St-Pierre, ranked by many as the second best pound-for-pound UFC fighter (behind Anderson Silva), will step into the Octagon to face number one contender Jon Fitch.

Fitch has won eight consecutive fights, a record in modern UFC history, but chances are you’ve never heard of him. This Saturday, he gets a chance to make a name for himself when he takes on St-Pierre for the UFC Welterweight title. This is St-Pierre’s second time holding the title, and he hopes to make it a long reign. Will Fitch gain the respect of MMA fans across the globe, or will he be GSP’s next victim?

Other notable matches include Brock Lesnar facing off against “The Texas Crazyhorse” Heath Herring in a UFC Heavyweight Bout. No one is sure what to make of the former WWE star as of yet, but this is a fight that he can’t afford to lose. It’ll be a great chance to see if he’s for real. Also, Roger Huerta will battle Kenny Florian in a UFC Lightweight matchup that has potential to be an amazing fight. Huerta, who took part of the 2007 UFC Fight of the Year against Clay Guida, is pure joy to watch. Florian on the other hand, has been on a tremendous streak since losing his one and only fight at 155 pounds against Sean Sherk back in 2006.

This is shaping up to be a very entertaining card! Tune in this Saturday on PPV.

Arena Bowl XXII has its hits and misses

With the NFL pre-season right around the corner, and training camps already underway, I am eagerly looking forward to the upcoming NFL season. To help me get through what’s going to be a long five weeks or so before the opening game between the Redskins and Giants, I decided to tune in to Arena Bowl XXII.

The San Jose Sabercats took on the Jon Bon Jovi-owned Philadelphia Soul. I should mention that he owns the team because the broadcast wouldn’t go five minutes without showing his face. The Sabercats, who have won three titles in the past six years, are the AFL equivalent to the New England Patriots. And their quarterback, Matt Grieb, has been compared to Tom Brady. He sure didn’t play like it yesterday; he was vastly outplayed by Soul quarterback Matt D’Orazio.

I have never watched a full Arena football game, so I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect. As the game began, both offenses easily drove down the field and scored with ease. Both quarterbacks had a ton of time to throw, and I was surprised at the amazing lack of defense. It was like a four-on-four schoolyard game, with both teams just taking turns scoring. It makes sense that Soul’s offense looked so good – they have Ron “Jaws” Jaworski as their team president. That guy can put together a playbook like it’s nobody’s business. The defense finally picked up late in the first half; the Soul disrupted Sabercats quarterback Matt Grieb and forced several turnovers down the stretch. San Jose made a late run late in the game, but Philly was pretty much in control the entire time, so the final score of 59-56 is a bit misleading.

Arena football is definitely a different animal than the NFL. It doesn’t have the complexity or the strategy, and I love watching defenses go at it (which is not something you’ll find in the AFL). That said, I’d still love to attend to an Arena game, it seems like it would be a fun diversion from the NFL offseason.

Philadelphia Soul set to face the San Jose Sabercats in Arena Bowl XXII

Arena Bowl XXII will take place this Sunday at the New Orleans Arena and it promises to be a good one. The Philadelphia Soul, coming in with a league best 15-3 record, are going up against the 13-5 San Jose Sabercats. The two met earlier this season in what was a game for the AFL ages. After San Jose jumped out to a 20-0 lead, eventually building it to 33-7, the Soul mounted a historical comeback and ultimately won, 58-57. There’s no doubt that the game is still on the mind of the San Jose players and there’s no better time than now to avenge that loss.

The Philadelphia Soul feature the league’s best offense and the league’s third ranked defense, which will be a tough combination for the Sabercats to overcome. On the other hand, San Jose’s defense offers one of the best secondaries in the AFL. They also have a league leading 31 sacks on defense, and that pressure will be key in trying to disrupt Philly’s star quarterback, Matt D’Orazio (pictured, right). The Sabercats offense is led by quarterback Matt Grieb and wide receiver Rodney Wright, but the Sabercats most consistent offensive threat, James Roe, will not be playing due to a knee injury. The teams are quite even, and this should make for a very entertaining game.

For those of you that are unfamiliar with arena football, there are some vast differences between the NFL and AFL. For one, arena football is played on a 50-yard field that has no out of bounds markers. Only a wall separates the fans and the field. The clock doesn’t stop save for a 1-minute warning, and this leads to a much faster pace than the NFL. All kickoffs and missed field goals can be returned by the opposing team. Each team plays eight players at a time, as opposed to the NFL’s lineup of 11. The live experience is much different as well. You can buy tickets to AFL games for as low as $5 dollars. Cheerleaders often throw prizes into the crowds between plays and each series. The cheerleaders and players are also required to stay on the field after the game so the fans can come down and greet them. It’s truly a great experience for those in attendance.

The Philadelphia Soul meet the San Jose Sabercats this Sunday, July 27th, at 3 PM ET, on ABC. Tune in and get your football fix.

Cardinals trying to keep Cowboys fans out?

Yahoo! Sports is reporting that the Arizona Cardinals are doing everything in their power to make sure that University of Phoenix Stadium isn’t filled with Dallas Cowboys fans when they meet on October 12.

“In the past two seasons, there was little concern about this since the team sold out every home game. But with ticket sales a bit slower as the third season approaches, the Cardinals are requiring fans who want to buy tickets to the Dallas game on Oct. 12 to also buy tickets for the Aug. 7 exhibition opener vs. New Orleans. Cardinals fans have “created a decisive home-field advantage” the past two years, and the team wants to keep it that way by discouraging single-game ticket sales to Dallas Cowboys fans, team spokesman Mark Dalton said.”

I can understand why a team wouldn’t want their stadium filled with the opposing team’s fans, but c’mon, this is ridiculous. Are you telling me that if I were a Cowboys fan, I’d have to buy a ticket to watch the Saints and Cardinals square off in an exhibition game? The first pre-season game is by far the worst to watch and the fact that exhibition tickets cost just as much as regular season tickets only makes it more painful. Maybe the Cardinals should worry more about putting a winning product on the field. Perhaps then Arizona fans would be more eager to come out and support their team.
