      Bengals sign Andy Dalton

      If you look at the headlines regarding Andy Dalton’s new contract, it seems like he broke the bank getting $115 million over 6 years. But we’ve learned that the devil is in the details when it comes to NFL contracts, and this breakdown from ProFootballTalk explains how this contract really sets the bar for second-tier quarterbacks.

      The guaranteed money really isn’t that high, so the Bengals aren’t taking a massive risk hear. As a Browns fan I was hoping they would sign Dalton to a stupid contract that tied them up long term, but that didn’t happen. Still, Dalton will be making some serious money and tying up the cap a bit, and frankly he’s just an above-average quarterback in my opinion. He’s been terrible in the playoffs when defenses get stiffer, and I’ll be surprised if he ever leads the Bengals to a Super Bowl.

      Still, as a business decision this wasn’t a terrible one.

      MLB trade deadline results in spectacular arms race

      Both the Oakland A’s and the Detroit Tigers went all in and bolstered their pitching staffs as the prepare for the postseason. Of course they aren’t the only two teams to watch in the American League, but suddenly a potential matchup between these two starting rotations has baseball fans salivating.

      Billy Beane had already added Jeff Samardzija, and now he adds John Lester. This latest one cost him Yoenis Cespedes so who knows how it will play out, but the A’s will have the arms to compete in October.

      But when it comes to mortgaging the future, the Tigers and their 85-year-old owner Mike Ilitch may have the A’s beat as they’ve dumped some great prospects in this mad flurry, capped off with their acquisition of David Price who now heads the most intimidating rotation in baseball. If Justin Verlander is your fourth starter you definitely have a shot in the postseason. We’ll see though if that’s enough.

      The Ray Rice mess

      It’s hard to find a dissenting opinion about this, unless of course you’re a Ravens fans. Despite his apology and trying to do things right since the incident, there’s little Ray Rice can do to erase the image of him dragging his unconscious girlfriend out of that elevator. And that’s a problem for Roger Goodell, who made one of the most criticized decisions in recent memory with his paltry two-game suspension of Rice.

      The fallout has been ugly, and it could get worse if Josh Gordon loses a year for barely failing a marijuana test that wouldn’t have counted had the B sample been counted first.

      The NFL is as popular as ever, but now that popularity results in even greater scrutiny. All the positive press the NFL gets when it breaks out the pink colors every may turn sour this year as everyone will be focusing on the fact that Ray Rice has been permitted to play.

      Meanwhile, Goodell has been hiding from the press. Let’s see if he says anything this weekend at the Hall of Fame festivities.

      Redemption for Lebron James

      Lebron James did the right thing – he’s coming home. I say “coming home” because I’m writing this from the Cleveland area and was pleasantly surprised to see Lebron right the wrong of “The Decision” in such a classy way with “The Letter.” Everyone can appreciate the sentiment of wanting to come home, but the folks in Northeast Ohio really needed to hear this from Lebron, and he said it perfectly.

      It’s also great for the NBA because the young and talented Cleveland roster also offers a better basketball story. It was pretty obvious that the Big Three era came to a halt with this thrashing at the hands of the Spurs, and Lebron needed a new challenge. That coincided perfectly with a desire to return home that had been building for years.

      As a Cavs fan I’m thrilled. I’m also happy for Lebron to be able to rise above the pettiness, acknowledge his own mistakes and take on a new challenge in the place he wants to be.

      Fans celebrate Team USA victory

      The scenes in this video from Hermosa Beach are pretty amazing and were replicated in other parts of the country like Grant Park in Chicago. Team USA’s victory over Ghana may not have been pretty but fans rejoiced nevertheless.

      Now things will get tougher with Portugal, a team coming off an embarrassing loss against Germany. Team USA has shown it can score, and that’s critical, but the passing and possession needs to improve dramatically. Let’s see what they can do.
