Avery Johnson off to great start

When Avery Johnson took over the head coaching duties for the Dallas Mavericks last season, it seemed like a good fit. He’s a tough, defensive-minded coach and that is exactly what the Mavs needed after several years of Don Nelson at the helm.Tonight, Johnson will coach the team for the 82nd time tonight, and has compiled a 65-16 record in that span. That represents the best start ever for an NBA coach.

Johnson appreciates what he’s accomplished, but he’s not about to let it go to his head. This is a guy who overcame being undrafted and repeatedly released to become the starting point guard on an NBA champion in San Antonio, so he knows all about humility and perseverance.

“There’s no magic formula to what we do as coaches,” Johnson said Monday. “Fortunately, we’ve won our share of games, but I don’t think it has as much to do with me as the young men on the court.”

Johnson, who hit the title-clinching shot to seal the San Antonio Spurs’ first championship, is known as the “Little General.” Tough and demanding, he has the Mavs playing the best basketball the franchise has seen in the last twenty years. Ironically, the Spurs and Mavs, who have the two best records in the West, are on a collision course to meet in the second round of the playoffs. If Johnson is able to get Dallas past his old team in the postseason, we’ll know that he’s really arrived.

Let the Madness begin

The top seeds have been selected, the snubs have been banished and the field of 65 is set. Problem is, the games don’t start until Thursday. What do we do until then?

Well, aside from getting your story straight for when you call off work Thursday, you’ve got a lot of reading to do before you can intelligently fill out your brackets. Check out Bullz-Eye.com’s Bracket Breakdown for a complete rundown of the tournament, region-by-region, and then take a look at Bullz-Eye’s Tourney Countdown, which analyzes some of the players, coaches and teams you need to keep an eye on this month.

And when you’re done reading all that, you might as well work on your excuse for when you call off work Friday too. Hey, it’s also St. Patrick’s Day!

Edge now a Cardinal

Edgerrin James wasted no time in free agency, signing a four-year, $30 M contract with the Arizona Cardinals.

“It’s a great situation. All they really need is a back,” James said at a news conference. “They’ve got an MVP quarterback (Kurt Warner), they’ve got two Pro Bowl receivers. They got a back and they’re going to shore up the offensive line.”

Then he added, “OK it’s a risk. But hey, I’m a poker player. You can take it to the river. I’m not scared to make a change. I’m not scared to go out on a limb and try something different.”

This signing continues Denny Green’s makeover of the Arizona offense. He now has the great back to go with his two talented wide receivers, Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin. It’s unclear whether or not the Colts intend to go with Dominic Rhodes as their starter or if they have another guy in mind.
