NBA players reject latest offer

It might be a long winter for NBA fans.

The NBA Players Association announced the players’ rejection of the league’s latest offer today along with the decision to begin disbanding the union. It looks like a move aimed at getting the owners to one last round of negotiations. If the owners sit down again, maybe this gets resolved soon. If the owners balk, then this likely goes to court and the season is likely lost.

Pacquiao survives spilt decision vs Marquez

Manny Pacquiao defeated Juan Manuel Marquez in a split decision last night in Las Vegas that is already controversial. It was an action-packed fight, but given the potential payday for a fight between Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr., it’s not surprising that the decision will be questioned by many.

The reaction from Dan Wetzel of Yahoo! Sports will likely be typical from the boxing world:

When the final bell rang, 12 rounds of furious fighting complete, Juan Manuel Marquez lifted his right fist high into the air, turned to the ringside crowd and offered a knowing wink through an eye nearly swollen shut.

Standing in front of him at that very moment, his opponent, Manny Pacquiao, let his head sag as he turned to walk to his corner. Seconds later Marquez was carried around the ring on the shoulders of two of his corner men. Pacquiao was on his knees in prayer.

What Pacquiao lost was clearer – his cloak of invincibility, his reputation for destruction, even, in some ways, a measure of his credibility.

Marquez is 38 years old and was dominated in his fight with Mayweather.

Attention will now turn to that potential blockbuster fight, and this close call probably won’t dampen excitement for that fight too much.

Joe Paterno fired

The Penn State trustees met tonight and fired Joe Paterno. University president Graham Spanier chose to resign today when faced with potential dismissal.

It’s a stunning development given Paterno’s power at Penn State, but it seems like the only possible choice that the trustees could make. The staggering abdication of responsibility at Penn State in light of the allegations against Jerry Sandusky had to be dealt with. It might even be worse, as the bizarre silence by Penn State officials in 2002 and during subsequent years raises all sorts of questions about that motivated these men to avoid bringing in the police.

It’s the right decision. Letting Paterno coach on Saturday with the pageantry of a college football game in light of the pain suffered by children as a result of his silence seemed like a gross injustice.

Penn State: “A Conspiracy of Cowardice”

I’m listening to ESPN, and Jay Bilas, probably the best commentator on that network, just used the phrase “conspiracy of cowardice” to describe the stunning chain of events at Penn State. It’s the best description I’ve heard so far on this mess.

We’ll see how the facts play out, as the “conspiracy” might be even worse if we find out that there was a deliberate cover-up.

But the “cowardice” is clear.

Report: Joe Paterno decides to retire at end of season

According to ESPN’s Mike and Mike show, the AP is reporting that Joe Paterno has decided to retire at the end of the season in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky indictment.

The question will be whether this is enough. Paterno is just doing the minimum here, as there was no way that Penn State was going to renew his contract for next year. Paterno seems to have done the minimum required by the law in 2002, and now he’s offering to do the minimum needed in the wake of this disgusting scandal.
