Warner considers retiring

Kurt Warner is contemplating his future – and not just in Arizona.

According to several media sources – including the Miami Herald – Warner is considering calling it a day all together on his NFL career after being benched two weeks ago for rookie Matt Leinart.

”Definitely I’m thinking about my next step and what’s best for me and all those things,” he said.

”We’ll sit down at the end of the year and see the way things are going,” Warner said.

One side of me feels bad that this guy. Warner used to be a grocery-bagger for a supermarket before finally getting a shot in the NFL. He takes St. Louis to two Super Bowls (winning one of them) and then gets replaced by Marc Bulger. He heads to New York and the Giants draft Eli Manning. He winds up in Arizona and the Cardinals draft Leinart.

But the other side of me (the side of me that dominates this subject) is screaming – ‘fine Warner, get out of the league!’ I mean seriously, you’ve had your day in the sun my friend – get out and stop whining every season that you’re getting passed over. Does Warner forget that he got a shot when Trent Green got hurt? Do you hear Green complain every season that he should have been the one leading the Rams offensive attack to the Super Bowl? No, because Green has taken his production to Kansas City and continues to perform.

You haven’t been good for some time now Warner. You wonder how yet another rookie replaced you? Try the 47 interceptions, 56 fumbles and 97 injuries that you’ve given the team that signs your paychecks over the past couple of years if you’re really looking for answers.

At least we won’t have to see your wife in the stands during your games if you decide to retire.

Detroit-Oakland Game 3 pushed up Friday

Sports Radio AM1130 WDFN out of Detroit announced Thursday afternoon that Major League Baseball has decided to push Game 3 of the Tigers-A’s series up from 8:15pm ET to 4:15pm ET Friday.

Officials for the MLB said the change was because of bad weather in the forecast for Friday night in Detroit.

I realize that with Cory Lidle dying in the tragic plane accident yesterday that the MLB may want to make this game a nationally televised event. Maybe the league is planning to do something special in New York to honor Lidle.

If the league doesn’t honor Lidle, however, and this was just a ploy for ratings (which isn’t that far-fetched considering the ’06 playoffs have produced a record low audience thus far), this move should be definitely criticized.

I’ll hold off judgment until I see what the MLB is planning, but for now, I question why the game was moved at all considering both Detroit and New York could both possibly face bad weather come Friday night.

Why move just the Detroit game out of prime time if you’re worried about bad weather?

Simms turned down 5-year, $10 million signing bonus from Bucs

In the offseason, there was speculation that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were not entirely convinced that Chris Simms was their quarterback of the future and therefore only signed the athlete to a one year contract.

Apparently, the Bucs were set on Simms after all – but the young quarterback felt he could make more money after the 2006 season if he could build on the success he had last year in going 6-2 as a starter. The St. Petersburg Times is reporting that Simms turned down a long-term contract from Tampa that would have given the 26-year old a five year deal as well as a $10 million signing bonus.

“It was good money, definitely. But I was rolling the dice,’’ said Simms, who has since had a splenectomy and is sidelined for the foreseeable future. “I have no regrets.”

Whoops.

Simms suffered a ruptured spleen in a game against Carolina three weeks ago and is likely shelved for the season. Making matters worse for Simms is that rookie Bruce Gradkowski played well enough against the Saints last week to merit a consistent starting role for head coach Jon Gruden. It also has been rumored that Gruden loves the potential Gradkowski has shown and it was no secret that Gruden was not happy with Simms’ production before his injury.

With Simms on the mend and likely to miss the rest of the season, he stands to lose a ton of money this offseason.

That probably wasn’t a good move by your son, Phil.

ALCS: Detroit 8, Oakland 5 (Detroit leads series 2-0)

As much as Todd Jones wanted to give the game away at the end, the Tigers took two games from the A’s in Oakland with a 8-5 victory Wednesday night.

Alexis Gomez (who?) was the star for the Tigers in Game 2. One more time: Alexis Gomez (who?!) was the star for the Tigers in Game 2.

If Leyland doesn’t win American League Manager of the Year, it will be the biggest farce in the MLB for 2006. Not only did he out-manage Joe Torre in the ALDS, but his lineup moves for Game 2 were suburb. Deciding to part ways with slugger Dimitri Young in the final month of the season and not making Chris Shelton part of the playoff roster, Leyland went with Gomez at DH against A’s starter Esteban Loaiza (0-1). Gomez answered by going 2 for 4 at the plate with four RBI (including a two-run bomb off of A’s starter Loaiza). In Game 1 it was Brandon Inge playing the hero role and now Gomez – a player some around Detroit felt should have been left off the roster in favor of Shelton.

Rookie rocket launcher Justin Verlander (1-0) earned the win for Motown. Verlander gave up four runs on seven hits in 5.1 innings of work.

Although Leyland’s move to play Gomez was excellent, having Neifi Perez bat second in the lineup was a head scratchier to say the least. The skipper is lucky that Perez never came up in a key situation, because Perez is brutal at the plate. Nonetheless, Detroit (a team that lost 119 games three years ago) has completely turned around its play with Leyland on board and it is absolutely remarkable what he has done with this ball club.

On the other side of the coin, Milton Bradley homered twice and was virtually the A’s only offense outside of Mark Kotsay (4-5, two runs scored). Bradley finished 3 for 4 with four RBI and two runs scored, but the rest of Oakland’s lineup (including a now 0-8 Frank Thomas) has been atrocious. Now done 0-2, Oakland will turn to Rich Harden for Game 3. Harden has absolute nasty stuff, but he hasn’t pitched in a MLB game since late April and now has the daunting task of trying to get a win on the road. Add to the fact that Harden will have to pitch in Detroit – where it’s supposed to be in the mid to low 30’s on Friday night – and against Kenny Rogers (1-0), and the A’s are really behind the eight ball in this series.

Game 3 starters: Rich Harden (0-0) vs. Kenny Rogers (1-0).

NFL Game of the Week: Seattle at St. Louis

As far as marquee match ups are considered, the NFL doesn’t offer any T.O. vs. Philadelphia contests this week. That doesn’t mean that there isn’t good football to be played, however, and the best game this Sunday will be played in St. Louis.

The 3-1 Seahawks travel to St. Louis to battle with the surprising 4-1 Rams. Even though it’s still early in the ’06 season, this game already has significant meaning to the NFC West title race. The winner will take a huge leap forward in trying to capture a the division and with Shawn Alexander being ruled out of the game, St. Louis really needs to take advantage of the situation.

One contest will be plucked off the schedule every week and broken down by each team’s strengths and weaknesses vs. its opponent. Plus, no preview would be complete without a forecasted score – you’ll find a prediction on the game at Bullz-Eye.com as well.

On tap for Week 6: Seahawks at Rams.
