Leftwich to Hotlanta?

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports the Falcons will bring in former Jaguars quarterback Byron Leftwich for a physical and may sign him as early as Tuesday. The potential move might have been foreshadowed when Bobby Petrino told the media on Monday that he believes current starter Joey Harrington is lacking confidence in his offense.

Harrington is what he is at this point. He’s got career backup written all over him and there’s a big reason why Detroit and Miami parted ways. The Falcons offensive line has taken a ton of heat for giving up 13 sacks the past two weeks, but Harrington shoulders much of the blame by not getting the ball out of his hands or scrambling to buy more time. He seemed gun shy Sunday in Jacksonville after throwing two picks in Minnesota last week and forget about him putting a winning drive together late in the fourth quarter.

As far as Leftwich is concerned, even if he did sign Tuesday, he wouldn’t be able to start for another three to four weeks. It’s not realistic to think that he’s going to pick up Petrino’s offense quickly and the guy has never been in great shape. If Atlanta is serious about Leftwich and he passes his physical, they should sign him immediately, scale back the offense so he can learn the basics, get him in shape and ready to go Week 9 coming off the BYE week. Can he be a savior? Probably not, but he’s no worse than Harrington, Chris Redmon or Casey Bramlet.

The Juice is loose and he wants his stuff back

Apparently O.J. Simpson didn’t get the memo that even if his name is on something, doesn’t mean that it actually belongs to him. Simpson, along with a few people he was attending a wedding with (yes really), recently barraged into the hotel room of a couple of sports collectors who owned his apparel, waved a gun and started yelling, “Mother f*****, you think you can steal my s***?”

However, that all went out the window when Simpson arrived with several men from a wedding he was attending in town. According to Riccio, Simpson and his companions then took the items and left the room. One of the men in the room, Alfred Beardsley, a real-estate agent and long-time Simpson memorabilia collector, claimed that at least one man in Simpson’s group brandished a gun.

Can you imagine sitting in your hotel room ready to make a nice mint on your Juice collection and the real Juice kicks in the door with a gun and starts screaming that he wants his s*** back? The collectors didn’t even have time to say, “Holy s*** – that’s the Juice!”

And how about these guys at the wedding? You’re there with O.J. freaking Simpson and at one point during the night he looks at you and says, “Hey man, these people stole some of my s*** and I want to get it back. You in?” Not only that, but these guys actually go, “Yeah Juice – sounds good, lets go get your s*** back.” Are you kidding me? Why would anyone follow this coconut anywhere?

There’s talk that he could spend the next 106 years in prison. So let me get this straight – he skates on double murder, but essentially gets life in prison for trying to rob somebody for some of his old sports memorabilia? Only in America…

Water cooler recap: Week 2

Most impressed with: Granted, he was facing a Pop Warner defense in Cincinnati, but Jamal Lewis (215 yards, 1 TD) showed he still has purpose in the NFL.

Least impressed with: The Bengals defense is simply atrocious. The Browns are underrated in some respects, but they’re not 51 points and 531 yards underrated. What a waste of a great offense in Cincinnati.

Wake up call goes to: Hey Saints, you’re not going to sneak up on teams like you did last year. Fix the offense and do something (anything) about the defense or underachieve all year.

Play of the day: Braylon Edwards’ full extension 34-yard touchdown snag in the third quarter against the Bengals was an unbelievable blend of concentration and savvy.

My best advice this week: Don’t buy Jaguars postseason stock quite yet. There’s just something missing – a run game for example – and you get the impression they don’t match up with some of the better AFC teams.

Many applauds to: Congrats on the win this week for everyone who has Carson Palmer and Chad Johnson on the same fantasy team…Everyone is waiting for Brett Favre (286 yards, 3 TDs) to retire, but in the meantime he continues to produce…The Falcons should have asked for three second round picks for Matt Schaub…In just two games, the Vikings D has produced three TDs, seven turnovers and 10 sacks…Jon Kitna is 35 percent toughness, 35 percent heart and 30 percent brass balls…In two games, Tony Romo has thrown for 531 yards and five touchdowns…For those who read my Week 1 recap, “Joey Galloway” is the answer to my question about the Bucs’ offense…Instead of giving up a TD to Devin Hester, teams should just kickoff and punt out of bounds…

Cheap shots: The Rams out gained the 49ers by 206 yards (392 to 186) and 12 first downs (20 to 8 ), and still lost…Joey Harrington isn’t bad, but forget about this guy ever leading a team down the field in less than two minutes to win a ballgame…Has anyone seen Lee Evans?…A botched handoff is a hell of a way to lose – just ask Matt Hasselbeck and Shaun Alexander…

ND embarrassing

It’s one thing to lose to a rival on their home turf – it’s quite another to get shutout, shellacked and downright embarrassed much like Notre Dame was in a 38-0 defeat at Michigan Saturday.

“My confidence isn’t shaken,” Weis said. “But as an organization, we haven’t done a very good job.”

No, you’ve done an absolute abysmal job Charlie. A bad job would be starting off a season 0-3, but showing a fight. An absolute abysmal job is going 0-3 and losing by a combined score of 102-13. An absolute piss poor job is getting shutout by one of the worst defenses in the nation.

The one thing I’ll credit Weis for, however, is the way he always takes responsibility. As a good coach does, he never points fingers and never puts it on the kids. Also, I realize Weis is working with a freshman quarterback and a very young team. However, these are the players he recruited and he’s in his third year. Ty Willingham was fired after three years and he was the one who recruited the players Weis took to the slaughterhouse last year. Is Notre Dame going to hold Weis under the same standards as they did Willingham? Doubtful.

Although hey, at least they didn’t lose to Appalachian State at home, so Weis has that going for him I guess.
