Good to see Booty can rebound quickly from a loss

What’s a starting quarterback to do after his team suffers a humiliating loss to a 38-point underdog on their home turf? Well, enjoy the rest of the night of course! SPORTSbyBROOKS.com has learned that USC quarterback John David Booty was seen partying at a popular Los Angeles nightclub after the Trojans were upset Saturday night by Stanford.

Among those at the Hollywood hot spot, which is a favorite of Matt Leinart, was quarterback John David Booty, who was observed doing shots and enjoying the company of several members of the fairer sex (not that there’s anything wrong with that!).

USC fans aren’t going to be pleased with this news once they get out from the rock they’re hiding under (which coincidentally is the same rock Michigan fans hid under after the Wolverines lost to Appalachian State).

With the amount of issues NFL teams have had recently with players getting into trouble, I’m sure they’re going to jump at the chance to pay this kid $10 million.

BoSox heading to ALCS, Yankees avoid sweep

Red Sox 9, Angels 1
Boston got huge contributions from David Ortiz, Manny Ramirez and Curt Shilling to wrap up a 3-0 series sweep of the Angels Sunday. Ortiz and Ramirez each hit home runs, while Shilling pitched seven strong innings, yielding just six hits and no runs. Boston Globe columnist Dan Shaughnessy writes that Shilling is once again the toast of the town again…T.J. Simers of The L.A. Times writes that the Angels failures rest squarely on the shoulders of manger Mike Scioscia.

Yankees 8, Indians 4
The Bronx Bombers avoided a series sweep, thanks in large part to Johnny Damon’s three-run home run in the fifth inning. Things looked bleak early for New York, especially when Roger Clemens was spanked for three runs in just 2.1 innings. Youngster Phil Hughes relieved Clemens and quieted the Cleveland bats long enough for the Yankees’ slumbering offense to finally produce. Rumors circulated before the game that Joe Torre’s job was on the line if the Yankees lost. Joe Sherman of the NY Post believes that Torre should keep his job regardless if the Yankees can come back in this series…The Cleveland Plain Dealer notes that Tribe starter Paul Byrd wants the ball in Game 4.

Water Cooler Recap: Week 5

Quick observations from Sunday’s action:

Colts 33, Bucs 14
This was supposed to be the marquee match up of the day, but Indy dominated in all phases of the game, even without Marvin Harrison, Joseph Addai and Bob Sanders. Kenton Keith (121 yards, 2 TDs) was fantastic filling in for Addai…A week after I laud Monte Kiffin for being one of the best game planners in the league, his unit surrenders 400 total yards and 33 points to a banged up Colts offense.

Patriots 34, Browns 17
This was easily New England’s worst performance of the season and they still put up 34 points…The Browns might have the most inept defensive line in football in terms of creating pressure and stopping the run…

Steelers 21, Seahawks 0
For Pittsburgh to shutout Seattle without Troy Polamalu, Bryant McFadden and Casey Hampton is impressive…Shaun Alexander rushed for only 25 yards on 11 carries, which was his worst statistical performance since November of 2002.

Chargers 41, Broncos 3
San Diego looked great, especially Philip Rivers (270 yards, 2 TDs), but Denver was atrocious. Nice effort by the Broncos defense on Michael Turner’s 74-yard run in the fourth quarter and did they ever consider defending Antonio Gates? He was open all game.

Jaguars 17, Chiefs 7
With how good the Jags defense is, all David Garrard has to do is not turn the ball over and this team might sneak into the playoffs as a Wild Card…Mike Solari had no clue how to move the ball against Jacksonville’s defense; the Chiefs finished with just 10 rushing yards.

Titans 20, Falcons 13
The Titans have the most underrated defense in the league – they saved Vince Young’s ass all day…The Falcons defensive players owe their offensive mates a swift kick to the throat after blowing a gift-wrapped victory…

Panthers 16, Saints 13
The Saints dominated this game, but two miscues in the fourth quarter cost them their first victory in 2007…Carolina should thank the football gods that they won a game in which David Carr started…

Giants 35, Jets 24
The Giants have needed a playmaker in their secondary for years and finally found one in Aaron Ross (2 INTs, 1 TD)… Kellen Clemons has to start for the Jets next week doesn’t he? Chad Pennington was brutal…

Redskins 34, Lions 3
Gregg Williams’s defensive game plan for Mike Martz’s offense was a thing of beauty…The stat of the game for the Lions: 1 for 10. As in, 1 for 10 on third down conversions…

Texans 22, Dolphins 19
Matt Schaub has nothing for weapons, but is willing the Texans to victories. Of course it helps when your kicker can make a 57-yard game winning field goal too…Please hang it up Trent Green – there’s plenty of life after football and you’re going to need your health.

Ravens 9, 49ers 7
What a brutal game. I don’t know whether to applaud both teams’ defense or shred the offenses. At least one man showed up in this game – way to go Matt Stover (3 FGs).

Cardinals 34, Rams 31
With Anquan Boldin sidelined for the second straight week, Larry Fitzgerald (9 rec. 136 yards, 1 TD) once again played like a man possessed… It wasn’t pretty, but Gus Frerotte had a gutsy performance. It’s too bad the defense continues to give up 30-plus points a game…

Thanks for playing Cubs and Phillies

Diamondbacks 5, Cubs 1
From the first pitched at Wrigley Field Saturday evening, the Diamondbacks were ready to move on to bigger and better things. Outfielder Chris Young homered off Cubs starter Rich Hill on the very first pitch of the game, and the D-Backs never trailed the rest of the contest. The Arizona Republic’s Bob Young writes that starter Livan Hernandez (6.0 IP, 1 ER) stayed poised working out of tough jams throughout the night…Jay Mariotti of The Chicago Sun Times writes it’s almost sickening how the Cubs haven’t won in ‘one hundred freaking years‘.

Rockies 2, Phillies 1
The upstart Rockies rode youngster Ubaldo Jimenez’s outstanding pitching performance and pinch-hitter Jeff Baker’s tiebreaking single in the eighth to sweep the Phillies. A 14-mintue power outage affected the game in the second, but Woody Paige of The Denver Post writes that through the darkness, the Rockies achieved historic brilliancePhiladelphia Inquirer staff writer Todd Zolecki writes that not even the resiliency that the team showed in the regular season could save the Phillies in this series.

The Rockies and Diamondbacks will play Game 1 of the NLCS on Thursday in Arizona.

USC repeats 2006 pitfall

They had won five straight games including 35 straight wins at home. They had also won 24 straight Pac 10 games at home, have some of the best talent in the country and were facing a backup quarterback commanding a 1-3 team. And for the second year in a row, USC coughed up a game they shouldn’t have when they were upset by Stanford 24-23 Saturday night.

What a defensive effort by Stanford, intercepting quarterback John David Booty four times, including one in the fourth quarter that preserved the win. You got the feeling that if the Cardinal stuck around long enough, they would pull off the upset – and they didn’t disappoint in a thrilling finish.

The loss put Pete Carroll’s bunch in a familiar situation. Last year the Trojans were tripped up by Oregon State and UCLA, but at least those were road games. This loss to Stanford was at home and to a sophomore quarterback that had previously attempted just three passes.

This upset is just another example of why preseason polls in college football mean next to nothing.
