Tebow takes home Heisman

Florida quarterback Tim Tebow became the first sophomore to win the Heisman Trophy, edging Arkansas’ running back Darren McFadden by 254 total votes. Tebow finished with a total of 1,957 votes, while McFadden had 1,703. Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennan finished a distant third with 632 total votes.

“It’s surreal,” said a beaming Tebow, who got a hug from Danny Wuerffel, Florida’s last Heisman winner as soon as he stepped on the stage. “I’m so thankful and honored. It’s just an overwhelming feeling to be here, and to be honest it hasn’t sunk all the way in yet.”

After a record-setting season that saw Tebow become the first player in Division I history to have at least 20 rushing and 20 passing touchdowns, it’s no wonder that the Gators’ signal caller was able to convince the Heisman Trophy Trust to make him the first underclassman to ever win the award since its inception in 1935.

Tebow was the right call. McFadden and Brennan were excellent, but college football might not see another quarterback rush and pass for 20 touchdowns apiece, unless of course Tebow does it again next year. Some people argue that Tebow’s numbers are a bit misleading since he’s able to call his own number in Florida’s dynamic offense. However, there are tremendous players in dynamic offenses all over the country, but none who rushed and passed for a total of 40 touchdowns. Plus, none of those players eclipsed 40 total touchdowns in a tough SEC, either.

MLB Trade Rumors: 12/8/07

– According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the Mets offered Carlos Gomez, Mike Pelfrey and others for Johan Santana. However, Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com writes that the Mets did not talk to the Twins about Santana.

– The A’s are interested in Barry Bonds. Friday, Bonds pleaded not guilty to perjury and obstruction of justice charges.

– The Yankees need a reliever and rumor has it that they’re willing to part with outfielder Hideki Matsui to land one. The Giants have an abundance of young pitching, but zero position players, so Jonathan Sanchez, Brad Hennessey and Kevin Correia’s names have been thrown out as possible trade bait for Matsui. Starter Noah Lowry’s name has also been linked to the Giants obtaining Matsui.

– The Cubs are shopping Mark Prior and are also interested in Japanse outfielder Kosuke Fukudome. The Padres and White Sox are also interested in Fukudome.

Michigan talking to Schiano

According to FOXSports.com, athletic director Bill Martin met with Rutgers’ head coach Greg Schiano to talk about the head coach vacancy at Michigan.

Both papers cited unidentified sources saying the meeting took place Tuesday night in New York during the College Football Hall of Fame banquet at a midtown Manhattan hotel. Though Michigan has made no official offer to Schiano, both papers reported one could be coming soon.

Schiano, a New Jersey native, has orchestrated one of the most impressive turnarounds in college football during his seven seasons at Rutgers. When he took over in Piscataway, N.J., the program was one of the worst in the Division I-A.

The Scarlet Knights have had three straight winning seasons and will be making their third consecutive postseason appearance at the International Bowl against Ball State on Jan. 6. They went 7-5 this season, a disappointment after starting the season ranked No. 16 in the nation.

Gasp! You mean Michigan is actually considering a head coach who isn’t a “Michigan man”? Wow, maybe the athletic department is starting to realize that there are decent candidates outside the “Great Lake State.” Schiano has done wonders at Rutgers and one would think that with more recruiting power, he could do the same at UM. Even if Schiano can’t be lured from Jersey, it appears that Michigan is going after a big name.

Update: ESPN is now reporting Schiano is staying at Rutgers. Michigan is now 0-2 luring head coaches.

Bonds wants to play in 2008

According to MLB.com, Barry Bonds wants to play in 2008.

“He’s training currently and he’d like to come back in 2008 to put a World Series ring on his finger,” said Jeff Borris, as the annual Winter Meetings began to wind down. “Barry definitely wants to continue playing. So I’m actively pursuing jobs for him from teams that are committed to winning.”

Bonds was indicted last month on four counts of perjury and one count of obstruction of justice for allegedly lying about his use of performance-enhancing drugs in testimony given to a grand jury four years ago. He’s expected to plead not guilty on Friday at his arraignment in San Francisco, which will begin the legal maneuvering in the case.

Hey Jeff, tell your client that he’s got bigger things to worry about than baseball.

Growing tired of the guarantee

Pittsburgh Steelers’ rookie defensive back Anthony Smith is guaranteeing victory over the undefeated Patriots this Sunday.

“People keep asking me if we’re ready for the Patriots,” Smith said. “They should be asking if they’re ready for us.”

Is Smith so confident that he is willing to copy one of former Pittsburgh linebacker Joey Porter’s familiar motivational ploys by guaranteeing the Steelers will win?

“We’re going to win,” Smith said. “Yeah, I can guarantee a win. As long as we come out and do what we got to do. Both sides of the ball are rolling, and if our special teams come through for us, we’ve got a good chance to win.”

I love that football is an emotional game and players feed off that. However, the guarantee is tired and so is the “respect card” for that matter. Tom Brady has subtly pulled the respect card out a few times this year, which is completely ridiculous. No player in the entire NFL gets more respect from the media than Tom Brady. And for that matter, no team gets more respect than the New England Patriots so please, just shut up and play the game.

For the record, I actually think the Steelers might pull of the upset this week. However, if they do lose, I want the first media member who enters their locker room to stick a microphone right in Smith’s face and ask him what happened. Somebody has to stop the guarantee.
