      Emmitt Smith tossed from NFL Countdown

      SPORTSbyBROOKS.com blogs that ESPN will not bring Emmitt Smith back to NFL Countdown. Along with many other folks, SnB rejoices at the thought of Emmitt-less Countdown.

      Point being, if you stink at your job, you should get fired. ESPN finally woke up and smelled the roses, deciding not to bring Emmitt Smith back to NFL Countdown. PRO FOOTBALL TALK reports that Cris Carter will be brought in instead to torture give us the news on Sundays with Chris Berman & crew.

      I would like to extend a hearty “WHAT THE HELL TOOK SO LONG?!?!?!?!?!” to everyone involved in this decision making process.

      Emmitt is brutal. Personally, I’m not even a huge fan of him as the all-time leading rusher, but there’s not a whole lot any of us can do about that. Except maybe hope Tavaris Jackson figures out that he is, in fact, supposed to hit his receivers’ hands.

      Finally though, what’s with this graduated move off of ESPN? Let’s make this whole thing happen, please. No Monday night, no Sportscenter, nothing. Stick him and Berman on a boat bound for that “Lost” island and let’s all just move on. Kthxbai.

      Hear-hear to that last comment about sticking Smith and Berman on a boat. ESPN should blow up NFL Countdown and start fresh. No more talking heads – get some people in there that know the game/league and not someone who thinks yelling at viewers for two hours makes for good commentary.

      Is Joe Paterno losing control of his program?

      ESPN recently paid a visit to the Penn State campus for a taping of “Outside The Lines” and what the network found was rather staggering. The self-proclaimed “World Wide Leader in Sports” might expose head coach Joe Paterno for losing grip of his football program.

      The numbers were damning but no more so than the responses from coach Joe Paterno.
      The show found that since 2002, 46 Penn State players have been charged with 163 criminal complaints. Forty-five of those complaints resulted in guilty pleas or convictions. Of the 46 players charged, 27 pleaded guilty or were convicted.

      More recently, to show the problem is getting worse, 17 players were charged in 2007 with 72 crimes. Nine charges resulted in guilty pleas. The numbers screamed about a lack of control by the coaching staff and a lack of discipline by the players.

      To those who have followed Paterno closely in recent years, his response also was expected.

      “I think you’ve done an awful lot of probing which bothers me that you might be on a witch hunt,” he said.

      The article points out that even though he says he still is “hands on” with his program, Paterno has often admitted that he now works mostly from home. The article goes on to list specific examples of how Paterno might be completely out of touch with this generation.

      But even so, JoePa has done more good than bad for college football, including demanding above-average scholastic achievements from his student-athletes, as well as donating his time and money to help fund a library at PSU. Still, a report like this is eye-popping to say the least.

      Wednesday MLB Headliners: Cubs making statement

      – For the second night in a row, the Chicago Cubs knocked off division rival Milwaukee. The Cubs got a tremendous start from ace Carlos Zambrano as Zambo gave up no runs on five hits and struck out nine over eight innings of work in Chicago’s 7-1 win. The Brewers’ Ben Sheets (10-4) got lit up in the sixth inning as the Cubs put a five-spot on the board. With the win, Chicago now has a three game lead in the NL Central.

      – Tampa Bay’s Matt Garza pitched his first career complete-game shutout as the Rays topped the Toronto Blue Jays 3-0. Garza gave up no runs on five hits and struck out five, while Eric Hinske (HR in 3rd) and Evan Longoria (two-run triple in 8th) provided the offense.

      – With the Rays’ win, the Red Sox fell two games back in the AL East as they continue to struggle with the Los Angeles Angels. The Halos got a masterful performance out of John Lackey, who held Boston to two runs on two hits while going the distance in a 6-2 victory. He took a no-hit bid into the ninth when Dustin Pedroia hit a one-out single. The Angels are now 7-1 against the Red Sox this season and just added former Braves’ first basemen Mark Teixiera to the lineup.

      – While Boston can’t figure out Los Angeles, the Yankees continue to struggle against the last place Orioles. While New York rallied for five runs in the final two innings Tuesday, it wasn’t enough as Baltimore knocked off the Bronx Bombers 7-6. Daniel Cabrera picked up his seventh win of the year, while Darrell Rasner continues to struggle at 5-8. Alex Rodriguez did hit his 22nd dinger of the year, but he Yanks have now fallen four games back in the division.
