Former Yankees prospect Karstens nearly throws perfect game

When the New York Yankees traded a handful of prospects to the Pittsburgh Pirates for outfielder Xavier Nady and Damaso Marte, many figured the Bucs got fleeced like every other team that deals with the Bombers.

But maybe not. One of the prospects the Yankees gave up in the trade was right handed starter Jeff Karstens – a player NY was willing to part ways with due to his recent struggles with a groin injury.

On Wednesday, Karstens made his Pirates’ debut and took a perfect game into the eighth inning before Diamondbacks’ outfielder Chris Young hit a double down the left field line. Karstens wound up completing the game (a 2-0 Pirates win), yielding no runs on just two hits and striking out four.

Kind of ironic how Joba Chamberlain goes on the DL the same day a former Yankee prospect almost pitches a perfect game for another club. What NY needs most right now is pitching and how fitting is it that they gave up a starter to acquire yet another bat. (I’m not a Yankee-hater, I just find the irony in the situation.)

Media outlets like ESPN jumped all over the Nady trade because they thought the Pirates made a horrible deal (and maybe they did). But let’s wait to see how these prospects perform before we just assume the Yankees fleeced another team at the trade deadline.

Reaction to Favre trade

Now that the Brett Favre saga is over with him being traded to the New York Jets, everybody and their brother has an opinion on the deal. Below are opinions from some fine online folks…and their brothers.

– Vinnie Iyer of the Sporting News writes that Favre will have little impact on the Jets.

– Mike Lupica of the New York Daily News doesn’t know what kind of impact Favre will have in the Big Apple, but writes that the Jets finally matter again.

– Peter King of SI.com loves himself some Brett Favre. King writes that the Jets have landed their most famous quarterback since Joe Namath.

– Tom Curran of NBC Sports writes that with Favre landing in the Big Apple, the fun can now begin.

– John Clayton of ESPN.com notes that landing in New York isn’t what Favre wanted.

Joba Chamberlain heading to the DL

According to the New York Post, Yankees’ starter Joba Chamberlain will be placed on the DL.

The Yankees put the right-hander on the 15-day DL with an injured shoulder before tonight’s game against Texas while awaiting word on a diagnosis from Dr. James Andrews.

The Yankees recalled pitcher Chris Britton from Triple-A, despite the fact he was sent down less than 10 days ago.

A player cannot be recalled after a demotion before 10 days have passed, unless his team needs him to replace an injured player.

Chamberlain is in Pensacola, Fla., today having his right shoulder examined by Dr. James Andrews, is bound for the DL.

A diagnosis from Andrews likely would determine how much time the 22-year-old would miss, and if surgery is required.

That thud you just heard was the Yankees’ playoff hopes.

Things unraveling in Milwaukee – Prince Fielder, Manny Parra fight

Things have gone from great to bad to worse for the Milwaukee Brewers since the All-Star Break. After winning eight of their first nine games following the break, the Brewers dropped five straight, including a four-game sweep at the hands of NL Central rival Chicago. Milwaukee is now five games behind the cubs in the division and even worse, they’re fighting with each other.

In a 6-3 loss to the Reds on Monday night, Prince Fielder and Manny Parra got into a scuffle in the team’s dugout after Parra gave up multiple runs in the fifth inning. Fielder shoved him twice before being retained by teammates. (Video of the incident can be seen at the link above.)

Yost downplayed the altercation after the game.

“It’s not a big deal,” Yost said. “For eight months a year, we’re a family, and at times things happen.

Tempers flare up. But it’s within the family, and it’s a little bit rude when your neighbors are fighting next door for you to go over and ask what happened. That’s kind of the case here. It’s nobody’s business what happened.”

“It’s already taken care of,” Parra said. “Nothing needs to be talked about. In the Minor Leagues, there’s no cameras on it, [but] stuff like that happens all the time.

Frustration is going to boil over when a team is losing. And this situation will probably blow over soon enough. (Fielder has already apologized about the way he handled the altercation.)

But the fact remains that the Brewers are collapsing while the Cubs continue to stay hot. And what a disappointment it would be for the team to give up multiple prospects to acquire CC Sabathia and they don’t even make the postseason.

In a slump? Try these slump busters

Every athlete goes through slumps. Slumps are just part of sports. Luckily enough, THE HUNGRY ACTOR has compiled 10 slump busters for the next time athletes hit a dreaded drought.

5. Not washing underwear, pants, socks etc-Locks down #5 cause of the nasty factor.

4. Sprinkling Eye Drops on your bat-This one is courtesy of Ozzie Guillen who claimed it allowed his bat to “see the ball better.” I couldn’t have made that up if I tried.

3. Hold a séance to awaken the dead wood in the bats-Sadly I wish I was clever enough to have made this one up. This one is courtesy of Mike Greenwell.

2. Wearing women’s underwear-If it is good enough for Tim Robbins it is good enough for #2 on the list.

1. Mutton Chops-Nothing would make me happier than to see a player bust out some Civil War style chops

I play for a men’s competitive baseball league in my hometown and up until a month ago, I was marred in a massive batting slump. So I started eating Lunchables before every game (Turkey and American Cheese) and now I’m working on a five-game hitting streak.

The point is, folks, you have to believe in the power of the slump buster. If you truly believe that thin slices of cheese and processed turkey served on a cracker will help you break out of your slump, then damn it, it will. Same thing goes for a beard, a mustache or a sleek pair of women’s u-trows.
