Has the power shifted in the AFC East this season?

Brett FavreBrett Favre gets traded to Jets + Tom Brady goes down for the season in Week 1 = Jets AFC East Champions. Right? Yes, although it certainly hasn’t been that easy.

Despite Patriots’ QB Matt Cassel throwing for a career-high 400 yards and three touchdowns, Jay Feely’s 34-yard field goal in overtime gave the Jets a thrilling 34-31 victory Thursday night in Foxboro. With the win, the Jets took over sole possession of first place in the AFC East at 7-3 on the year.

While watching the game (yes, I am one of the 34 people who have the NFL Network), I got the impression that the power has shifted a bit in the division. Not to say that New England is out of it because clearly Cassel is more than capable of leading the Pats to the playoffs, but Jet Favre has provided a spark in New York that had been missing at the quarterback position.

After the Jets decided to make the game interesting by allowing Cassel and the Patriots to march right up the field for a game-tying touchdown with only seconds remaining in regulation, New York won the opening toss and marched right up the field. I don’t want to get into all of the “vintage Favre” crap, but the drive was indicative of what Brett has done throughout his entire career. He made plays when the game was on the line and propelled his team to victory. Even though he has resurrected the Dolphins this season, I doubt Chad Pennington would have lead the Jets in the same fashion Thursday night.

The Jets face their toughest test of the season next week when they travel to Tennessee to take on the Titans. If they can muster a victory, they should be on easy street the rest of the year: vs. Denver, at. San Fran, vs. Buffalo, at Seattle, vs. Miami. Of those games, the Jets get the Bills and Dolphins – two division opponents – at home.

With their victory over the Pats, the Jets have now set themselves up to win the division. But obviously Bill Belichick and New England won’t go quietly so this is shaping up for a great battle down the stretch.

Yankees acquire Nick Swisher

Nick SwisherAfter sending Jason Giambi packing after the 2008 season, the New York Yankees traded Wilson Betemit and two minor league pitchers to the Chicago White Sox on Thursday in exchange for Nick Swisher, who could be a candidate to play first base next season.

“We’re excited with the addition of Nick Swisher,” Girardi said in a statement released by the team. “We feel he has a ton of upside. He’s a patient switch-hitter, adds versatility at a number of defensive positions, including first base and the outfield, and will be a positive presence inside the clubhouse.”

The Yankees are currently looking at a possible outfield alignment of Johnny Damon in left field, a platoon of Brett Gardner and Melky Cabrera in center, and Xavier Nady in right. Hideki Matsui is also coming back from knee surgery, and could play left or be a designated hitter.

Swisher made 69 starts in center field, 47 starts at first base, 16 starts in left and 11 starts in right for Chicago last season. His arrival in New York could lessen the chances of the Yankees offering salary arbitration to right fielder Bobby Abreu, who hit .296 and drove in 100 runs last season.

This is kind of a strange move considering the Yankees need so much pitching – not too mention Swisher was one of the worst hitters in baseball last year. But obviously the Bombers needed to fill the vacancy Giambi left at first and it doesn’t sound like they gave up too much. (Betemit has never lived up to his potential.)

‘The Curse of Sarah Palin’ lingers

Even though we won’t be hearing the words, “Our Vice President, Sarah Palin…” anytime soon, it doesn’t mean that she isn’t making her presence felt in this country.

‘The Curse of Sarah Palin’ apparently isn’t going away. Since dropping the opening puck at a Blues game a few weeks back, the team is 1-7 and has dropped six straight after giving up three goals in six minutes Wednesday night in a 4-3 loss to the Buffalo Sabres.

Parents please – warn your children of the Sarah Palin curse. This thing is still affecting lives.

Kyle Orton set to play Sunday vs. Packers

In an amazing turnaround, Chicago Bears’ QB Kyle Orton is set to play vs. the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, barring a setback with his injured ankle.

The Bears might wait until 90 minutes before kickoff Sunday to make it official, but quarterback Kyle Orton showed what he needed to while running the first-team offense in practice Thursday to get the start at Green Bay.

Orton jogged off the field on his taped-up right ankle, proof that even if he was limited in the workout, he felt just fine.

”He’s a lot better today than he was [Wednesday],” coach Lovie Smith said. ”If he continues to make the same type of progress, hopefully we’ll have him available.”

This is amazing considering how bad the injury looked on replays. Orton’s leg bent backwards in a way that usually signifies that a player will be lost for the season. Hopefully the Bears aren’t rushing him back onto the field, although they obviously need him to play with their postseason hopes hanging in the balance over the final seven weeks of the season.
