Devin Hester loses kick returning duties

In one of the more surprising falls from grace this season in the NFL is Devin Hester. The Chicago Tribune is reporting that Danieal Manning will take over Hester’s old job as Chicago’s No. 1 kick returner Sunday when the Bears travel to St. Louis to take on the Rams.

Devin HesterHester, who has five career kickoff returns for touchdowns (including Super Bowl XLI), has yet to return a kick or punt for a score this season. The pressure of having to produce after being rewarded with a four-year, $40 million contract extension ($15 million guaranteed) evidently has taken a toll. The burden of trying to develop into a top receiver likely has done the same.

So in steps Manning, whose 26.5-yard average per kick return is almost 5 yards better than Hester’s (21.8). Manning averaged 44.2 yards during the preseason including a 75-yarder against San Francisco. His career average is 24.9.

“When you have a guy like [Manning] sitting on the bench, you have to use him,” special-teams coordinator Dave Toub said. “It gives Devin a chance to maybe recover. He’s playing a lot of offense. He’s doing the punt returns. It’s a luxury to have someone else to go to.”

Quite frankly, I don’t blame Hester for falling off the map. The Bears did nothing in the offseason to boost their sagging receiving corps (unless you really, really like Marty Booker) and they put the onus on Hester becoming their No. 1 deep threat. Not that he can’t excel at everything because he is a fantastic player, but the Bears really asked Hester to do three jobs – No. 1 receiver, kicker returner, punt returner. Some may lump the two return jobs together, but it’s really two different positions.

People may criticize Hester, but the guy is learning a whole new position – his kick returning abilities were bound to take a hit.

Source: Browns pursuing Bill Cowher

A source has told ProFootballTalk.com that the Cleveland Browns are pursuing Bill Cowher to possibly become their next head coach.

Bill CowherPer the source, the Browns are willing to give Cowher a contract worth $8 million to $9 million per year.

Presumably, Cowher’s arrival would occur only if G.M. Phil Savage were fired or significantly marginalized. (Maybe Savage can go work for the Bills — or if all else fails he can root for them.) Cowher would want final say over personnel, and Cowher would want to install one or more of his former Steelers colleagues into key positions.

Likely candidates, if they can finagle a path out of Pittsburgh, would be director of football operations Kevin Colbert and/or director of business operations Omar Khan.

Cowher played for the Browns (i.e., Ravens) from 1980 through 1982, and he served as special teams coach in 1985 and 1986. He was moved to defensive backs coach in 1987, and he remained in that position through 1988.

This is obviously interesting news but keep in mind the source. PFT rarely (if ever) reveals their sources and I’m not so sure they don’t make 50% of their stories up. And how convenient is it that they released this story the same day word surfaced that current Browns’ GM Phil Savage sent a Bills’ fan an e-mail with the words “F&*% You” in it?

I don’t want to dash any hopes for Browns fans because the story might be 100% accurate, but I’m going to wait until a more reputable sports site does a follow up.

Browns’ GM Phil Savage says “F-You” to Bills fan in e-mail

Cleveland general manager Phil Savage apparently used profanity in an e-mail responding to a badgering Bills fan following the Browns’ 29-27 win in Buffalo on Monday night.

The exchange was first reported on the Website deadspin.com.

“I heard something about it this morning,” said coach Romeo Crennel. “We all get frustrated at times. Phil, generally, like the rest of us tries to be professional and hold it in, but sometimes some things slip out. It’s unfortunate that it slipped out.

“But (during) tough times, tough things happen. I’m sure if we had to do it over again, we’d do it a little bit differently. I talked to him this morning and said we just have to hang in there, keep fighting and try to get this thing turned.”

The email exchange occurred during the Browns’ 29-27 win in Orchard Park, N.Y., on Monday night.
The fan, who appeared on WKNR radio on the Tony Rizzo Show without identifying his real name, said he had been badgering Savage during the course of the evening.

Savage’s last response was: “Go root for Buffalo. F*&# you.”

I’m all for being professional, but I don’t have a problem with what Savage wrote. If the Bills fan wants to be an a-hole, than Savage has every right to drop an F-bomb in his lap. That said, he still shouldn’t have written it and I’m sure after he hit the send button he thought to himself, “Ah, sh*t – I shouldn’t have f’n said that.”

Considering Roger Goodell suspended Dallas QB coach Wade Wilson for five games and fined him $100,000 for purchasing an using performance-enhancing drugs last year, Savage can probably expect a call from the league office soon.

Analyzing sports dreams

THE LOVE OF SPORTS dedicates one of their latest columns to helping people interpret what their sports dreams mean.

My brother told me about this nightmare he had where Al Davis was chasing him while shouting weird phrases in Latin. He wakes up before he can catch him.
-Dan, CA

Well, there’s an important distinction you failed to mention in your description. Was he chasing him on foot or on a Segway? They mean two different things. If Davis was chasing your brother on foot it could simply mean he has a minor financial matter that’s troubling him. If he was chasing him on a Segway, however, there’s much cause for concern. Is there a history of ‘antichrist’ in your family? You might want to look into it.

I once had a dream I was Tim Kurkjian’s personal masseuse. Am I weird?
-B.

Yes.

I had a dream last night where I was trapped in a hot tub with these girls from Florida State University:

FSU Girls

Now take out the words “dream” and “was trapped” and replace them with “fantasy” and “wishing I was trapped” and you’ll have a more accurate sentence.

Donald Driver’s father hospitalized – claims police beat him

The father of Green Bay Packers’ wide receiver Donald Driver remains hospitalized after an incident in Houston where he claims officers beat him.

Donald Driver“Supposedly he was being elbowed in the throat,” family spokesman Quanell X said. “He motioned like this with his arm that he was being elbowed to the throat and said they were kneeing him a lot.”

In a news conference near the site of the arrest, family and friends said Marvin Driver had just dropped off his brother at his mother’s house early Monday morning when Houston police arrested Marvin on outstanding traffic warrants.

“So how can someone have traffic warrants for their arrest and be taken away from here in good health, no restraining whatsoever, then end up like this in intensive care after being in police custody,” community activist Quanell X said, holding up a photo of Marvin on a ventilator.

Despite the tubes, Marvin has been trying to tell his side of the story.

“Marvin Driver writes that they took him, picked him up behind a Valero station by a dark road where he was beaten,” Quanell X said.

Marvin says three Houston police officers — one he says he knew — kicked and beat him, then forced him to swallow a pill.

“Told him to ‘Swallow this, you’re going to see Jesus,” Quanell alleged.

Marvin’s brother Winston says he saw the arrest and says Marvin was not resisting.

“He left here in perfect condition,” says Winston, Donald Driver’s uncle. “I can tell by the police officers, way they were grabbing him, smashing him, that he was in trouble.”

It’s not our place to speculate on what happened here, but this is a strange, unsettling story. And if what the Driver’s are claiming is true, than let’s hope these officers are punished. We’ll have to wait until all the facts come out.
