This past week in the NFL seemed to give everybody a glimpse of what teams are for real and what teams are just pulling a dog and pony show.
Baltimore virtually has no run game and Steve McNair can be had. The defense is phenomenal, but it’s the same old story for the Ravens D – they can’t do it alone. Hence, I don’t feel like they are top five material after this week.
After big wins at home this past weekend, I believe Philadelphia and Denver are top five worthy – so lets see some new blood in these rankings, shall we?
Here is a look at the class and trash with nothing in between:
1. Chicago Bears (5-0)
Previous Rank: 1
The only concern I had with Chicago’s team a few weeks ago was that the Bears lacked a decent run game. The past two weeks Thomas Jones has run for 95 (4.1 yards per carry) and 109 (5.0 yards per carry), respectively. I guess my concern is not needed anymore in Chi-Town. The Bears are scoring more points than anybody else in the league (31.2) and are giving up the least (7.2). If that’s not a way to win in the NFL, I don’t know what is.
2. New England Patriots (4-1)
Previous Rank: Unranked
This is by far and away the toughest spot to fill, because I don’t know anyone is remotely close to Chicago. I would leave Indy alone at number two, but they have no running game and can’t stop the run. So, why not give it to a team that somehow finds a way to win with less and less talent (so it seems) every week? The defense is playing over its head, but these guys don’t lose back-to-back games and last time I checked, they still have the best quarterback in the league.
3. Denver Broncos (3-1)
Previous Rank: Unranked
Damn, if Jake Plummer wasn’t still the Broncos quarterback when I woke up this morning, Denver would be ahead of New England. Jake the Snake is brutal at times and I just wouldn’t rely on that guy down the stretch – ever. The defense is fantastic though, and it merits the Broncos breaking into the top three after previously being unranked.
4. Philadelphia Eagles (4-1)
Previous Rank: Unranked
Donovan McNabb is playing some of the best football I’ve seen him play in his entire career. He is lifting his team like he lifted them to all of those NFC Championship games in this half decade. The Philly defense isn’t the stout unit it has been, but it hasn’t mattered with McNabb playing as well as he has. Brian Westbrook (as usual) has got to stay healthy though.
5. Indianapolis Colts (5-0)
Previous Rank: 2
As previously noted, the Colts are in a world of trouble. The duo of Dominic Rhodes and Joseph Addai just isn’t working. They need to stick with one back (Addai would be my suggestion) and give the guy 20-25 carries a game to make the opposition at least respect the run game a little. If Tennessee can hang with the Colts on their home turf, other teams on Indy’s schedule must think they have a great shot now too.
On the cusp: San Diego (3-1), Baltimore (4-1), Atlanta (3-1), Cincinnati (3-1), Seattle (3-1).
28. Houston Texans (1-3)
Previous Rank: Unranked
They don’t even play and they get moved back down into the bottom five. But hey, Tampa Bay may have a quarterback now in Bruce Gradkowski and the Bucs are starting to score again, so Houston it is.
29. Detroit Lions (0-5)
Previous Rank: 29
It’s simply amazing how this team finds ways to lose every single week. That interception that Jon Kitna threw that got returned for a touchdown by the Vikings Antoine Winfield was completely fitting for a team that had been up 17-3 virtually the entire game.
30. Miami Dolphins (1-3)
Previous Rank: 30
So, Joey Harrington gives you the best chance to win Nick Saban? I wonder if Saban can hear the laughs coming from directly north of him…somewhere in the Detroit area…
31. Tennessee Titans (0-4)
Previous Rank: 31
Close, close, close Titans! Tennessee incorporated the shotgun option against the Colts that Vince Young ran at Texas and what the Falcons are running with Michael Vick in Atlanta. At least this will help Young see the field better and learn on the run.
32. Oakland Raiders (0-4)
Previous Rank: 32
I like the way Art Shell is leaving Jerry Porter inactive. Shell might not win many games this season, but he’s trying to right the sinking ship in Oakland and the players need to learn that they can’t run the team.
