2010 NFL Power Rankings: Week 7

New York Jets coach Rex Ryan yells from the sidelines in Indianapolis, Indiana in this January 24, 2010 file photo. It could prove to be a perfect match should tough-talking Ryan deliver on his promise of a return to football glory for a New York Jets team whose history was founded on a Super Bowl guarantee made good. Two teams in the top 5 fall from last week, while the Packers continue to slide and the Giants continue to climb.

Let’s get nasty…

Check out Week 6’s Power Rankings

1. Pittsburgh Steelers
Previous Week: 1
After shaking off the rust in the first half, Big Ben threw three touchdowns in his return to action last Sunday. If he’s already playing at the top of his game, this is the team to beat for the foreseeable future.

2. Indianapolis Colts
Previous Week: 2
That wasn’t a very convincing performance in Washington on Sunday night, but a win is a win in the NFL. That said, something tells me the Jets will be moving into this spot within the next couple of weeks.

3. New York Jets
Previous Week: 4
The Jets certainly didn’t dominate the Broncos last weekend and they were bailed out by Renaldo Hill’s pass interference call inside the 5-yard line in the closing minutes. But it’s never easy for East Coast teams to travel cross-country and beat the Broncos in Denver. Yet, that’s exactly what Rex Ryan’s team did.

4. New England Patriots
Previous Week: 7
Tom Brady wasn’t sharp until late in the Pats’ win over the Ravens, but he was efficient when it mattered most. Deion Branch isn’t Randy Moss, but he proved on Sunday that he doesn’t need to be in order to help New England win.

5. Baltimore Ravens
Previous Week: 3
Tough loss for the Ravens in New England last Sunday. I wouldn’t say they dominated the Pats for most of the game, but they were definitely in control. In the end, they got Tom Brady’d.

6. New Orleans Saints
Previous Week: 8
I guess the Saints answered the question of whether or not the Bucs were for real. That’s the performance everyone has been waiting for out of this team.

7. New York Giants
Previous Week: 11
I held off bringing the G-Men back into the top-10 until they proved they could stop beating themselves with costly turnovers. They’ve done that over the last three weeks and they might be the most confident team in the NFC right now.

8. Philadelphia Eagles
Previous Week: 10
The Eagles’ win on Sunday over the Falcons was one of the most dominating performances I’ve seen from a team against a playoff-caliber opponent. The only blemish on an otherwise perfect day was the injury sustained by DeSean Jackson. Get better soon, DeSean.

9. Atlanta Falcons
Previous Week: 5
When a team starts 4-1 and has as much talent as the Falcons, not many people get fixated on how that team won those games. When a team travels Philly, allows Kevin Kolb to throw for over 300 yards and then gets dominated in every phase of the game, people start throwing the term “overrated” around when two of said team’s wins were courtesy of a missed field goal and a fluke fumble. The Falcons still have a lot to prove.

10. Green Bay Packers
Previous Week: 6
Three weeks ago the Packers were sitting atop these rankings as the clear-cut best team in football (in my eyes, anyway). But an ugly Monday night loss to the Bears and 40,034 injuries later, this team is on the verge of dropping out of the top-10.

11. Tennessee Titans
Previous Week: 14
The Titans aren’t a very consistent team, but they certainly have the talent on both sides of the ball to challenge the Colts and Texans in the AFC South this year. Hopefully the injury to Vince Young isn’t serious and he won’t miss any games.

12. Houston Texans
Previous Week: 12
That was a nice last-minute win by the Texans over the Chiefs on Sunday, but this team has some serious defensive issues and it didn’t help losing DeMeco Ryans for the rest of the year.

13. Chicago Bears
Previous Week: 9
I know Lance Briggs was out but come on, Bears. The Seahawks have consistently been one of the worst road teams in the NFL for the better part of a decade and you give up 23 points at home? Once again, the problems on the offensive line rear their ugly heads.

14. Miami Dolphins
Previous Week: 19
I know the Packers are beat up, but it’s never easy to travel to Green Bay and earn a win at Lambeau. Hopefully the Dolphins’ issues were resolved over their bye and they can start moving forward again.

15. Minnesota Vikings
Previous Week: 17
I don’t truly believe that this is a top-15 team yet, but does anyone else get the feeling that the Vikings are going to start taking advantage of the Packers’ injuries and the Bears’ offensive line issues and climb to the top of the NFC North standings soon? God helps us if that happens; I can hear Lord Favre’s press conference now: “Does anyone want to talk about how we’re in first place now? I mean golly, fellas – we just won our fifth game in a row and you keep brining up the junk mail I sent that girl in New York. Doesn’t anyone want to talk about Percy Harvin?”

16. Washington Redskins
Previous Week: 13
The Redskins may have lost on Sunday but it’s clear the impact Mike Shanahan and Donovan McNabb have made in Washington. Because this isn’t a very good football team, yet they’re competitive each and every week.

17. Kansas City Chiefs
Previous Week: 15
For once, the fans can’t pin a loss on the offense. Matt Cassel and Co. did enough to win last Sunday in Houston, but the defense fell apart for the first time this season.

18. Dallas Cowboys
Previous Week: 16
What has to be most frustrating about this team is that they kill themselves with stupid penalties and mistakes week in and week out. If the Cowboys can ever put a full game together minus all the ridiculous errors, then the wins will start coming. But as of right now this is one sorry football team.

19. Arizona Cardinals
Previous Week: 21
The team most people left for dead when Kurt Warner retired is now 3-2 and has a chance to take a lead in the NFC West if they can beat the Seahawks in Seattle next week.

20. Seattle Seahawks
Previous Week: 25
The Seahawks finally proved they can win a tough game on the road by beating the Bears in Chicago last Sunday. Now they return home to face their top competition in the NFC West right now. A win over the Cards this Sunday will go a long way to proving that Pete Carroll’s squad isn’t going away.

21. San Diego Chargers
Previous Week: 18
Back in Week 1, my buddy texted me before the Chiefs-Chargers game and asked me whom I picked in a football pool we’re both in. I texted back “Chiefs” and he asked me why. My response: “You heard it here first – San Diego isn’t as good as everyone things they are.” Too bad none of my other predictions or picks are every right.

22. Jacksonville Jaguars
Previous Week: 20
Let’s hope ESPN institutes a three-year ban on showing the Jaguars on Monday Night Football, with an option seven years on top of that. The Jags performance last night was hideous. The only thing they did right was shutdown Chris Johnson for most of the game.

23. Cincinnati Bengals
Previous Week: 23
The Bengals have a huge test this weekend in Atlanta. They’ll be facing a pissed off Falcons team that was just obliterated in Philadelphia. That said, if Cincy stops the run then they’ll have a chance to win because the blue print on how to beat the Falcons has been laid out.

24. Denver Broncos
Previous Week: 24
What I wrote last week about this team still applies: I think this team is better than what people think, but they’re hurting right now without a running game. Kyle Orton and the defense need Knowshon Moreno back yesterday.

25. St. Louis Rams
Previous Week: 28
I think I’m going to be moving this team up and down these rankings all year depending on whether or not they played home or away the previous Sunday. What an impressive win over the Chargers last weekend.

26. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Previous Week: 22
Well, I guess that answers that question…

27. San Francisco 49ers
Previous Week: 29
As “Jester of the Apocalypse” noted Sunday following the game: The Niners were bad, but the Raiders were just worse. It’s great that Mike Singletary’s squad picked up its first win but it certainly wasn’t in impressive fashion.

28. Detroit Lions
Previous Week: 27
The Lions have battled every week and yet they only have one win to show for it. Hopefully once Matthew Stafford returns, this team catches a few well-deserved breaks courtesy of the football gods.

29. Oakland Raiders
Previous Week: 26
Wow, Jason Campbell really is that bad. Who knew?

30. Cleveland Browns
Previous Week: 30
Nice debut, Colt McCoy. He may not be ready to take over the full-time duties but if you’re Eric Mangini, why not play him? Against one of the toughest defenses in the league, he was poised, accurate and didn’t make a ton of huge mistakes. Why not run him out there again if Seneca Wallace can’t go?

31. Carolina Panthers
Previous Week: 31
Matt Moore is back under center for the Panthers, but don’t expect different results. This team is a mess and I’ll be shocked if John Fox keeps his job for 2011.

32. Buffalo Bills
Previous Week: 32
Whatever.
