2010 NFL Power Rankings Week 5
Week 5 comes with a realization that there isn’t a clear-cut best team in the league right now.
My top team in Week 4, the Colts, lost to the last-place Jaguars last Sunday thanks to a Josh Scobee 59-yard field goal. Despite their record, the Packers are a mess, the Ravens don’t give me that we’re-the-best-team-vibe and the Saints have injury issues.
So while I’ve moved the Packers back into the top spot, just know I’m not entirely convinced they’re the top team in the league. Right now, no team has established themselves as the best.
Let’s get nasty…
Check out Week 4’s Power Rankings
1. Green Bay Packers
Previous Week: 2
One would have thought that after their embarrassing loss to the Bears on Monday night last week that the Pack would come out and steamroll the Lions. But as fellow TSR contributor and Green Bay fan John Paulsen said to me after the game, this team lacks that killer tenacity. Regardless, they moved back into the top spot after a one-week hiatus.
2. Indianapolis Colts
Previous Week: 1
I wrote it before the season and I’ll write it again now: the Colts are going to have issues stopping the run all season. They’re weak up the middle defensively and they’ll continue to struggle against any team that can establish the run.
3. Baltimore Ravens
Previous Week: 4
It’s never easy to march into Pittsburgh and knock off the Steelers. It’s even harder to look good while doing it, so I’m not going to knock the Ravens for having to pull out a win in the final minute. This isn’t college football, where teams get style points for wins. That was a hard-fought win, Baltimore.
4. Pittsburgh Steelers
Previous Week: 3
Even though the loss to the Ravens last Sunday stings, Mike Tomlin has to feel good that his team went 3-1 without Ben Roethlisberger. Even though everyone in Pittsburgh is excited for his return, it’ll be interesting to see how rusty Big Ben is next week. The Steelers’ bye couldn’t have come at a more perfect time.
5. Atlanta Falcons
Previous Week: 5
You could have seen that letdown coming from a mile away. The Falcons were coming off a huge emotional win over the Saints in New Orleans and were taking on a winless 49ers team at home. Thanks to Roddy White’s outstanding hustle, the Falcons were fortunate to walk out of the Georgia Dome with a victory last week.
6. New Orleans Saints
Previous Week: 6
I thought about dropping the Saints down after they struggled last Sunday with the lowly Panthers, but this is one banged up football team right now and Carolina has always given them trouble for one reason or another. The Saints just have to get by with what they have until they can return to full strength.
7. New York Jets
Previous Week: 7
The Jets are already making me look bad for predicting them to finish third in the AFC East. What a display of domination they put on in Buffalo last Sunday and who says L.T. is finished? It’s great to see him at the top of his game again.
8. New England Patriots
Previous Week: 11
Holy special teams, Batman – what a performance in Miami. Congratulations to Tom Brady for his 100th career win. Even though it’s fun to root against the Patriots because of their success, let’s not overlook the fact that Brady is a self-made player.
9. Houston Texans
Previous Week: 9
Considering the Texans were without Andre Johnson and benched Arian Foster for the first quarter, it was impressive that they still scored 31 points. I realize it was against the Raiders, but Bruce Gradkowski has breathed life into that team and it was good to see that Houston didn’t falter against an inferior opponent on the road.
10. Chicago Bears
Previous Week: 10
I’ve been awfully hard on the Bears so I’m going to give them a mulligan this week. Even though they still probably would have lost given how bad Jay Cutler was playing, they didn’t have a chance once Todd Collins entered the game. And whom else am I going to put here? Dallas? The Giants? This is a worse spot than No. 1.
11. Philadelphia Eagles
Previous Week: 9
I see a lot of Trent Edwards in Kevin Kolb – a.k.a. “the checkdown maker.”
12. Dallas Cowboys
Previous Week: 13
That’s a pretty sweet deal – don’t play and still move up a spot in the rankings.
13. New York Giants
Previous Week: 16
The Giants were absolutely dominate defensively on Sunday night, but let’s call a spade a spade: they could have played with seven guys on defense in the second half and still tormented Todd Collins. Chicago’s pass protection is awful.
14. San Diego Chargers
Previous Week: 18
Some may have the Chargers ranked higher, but their two wins came against the Jaguars and Cardinals at home. Once they a) beat somebody on the road or b) beat somebody decent, then we can talk about moving them higher.
15. Kansas City Chiefs
Previous Week: 19
It took a bye week and all the teams playing ahead of them to lay an egg to move the Chiefs up this high, but I’m fine with the decisions of made in my life. I’m watching you though, Kansas City.
16. Minnesota Vikings
Previous week: 17
Is anyone else kind of hoping that the Jets drop kick Brett Favre in his return to the Big Apple this week? After the way he retired his way out of New York, I admit, I wouldn’t mind seeing him get embarrassed on national TV.
17. Miami Dolphins
Previous Week: 12
The word fluke is already coming to mind with this team. They’ve beat a horrendous Bills team by five points in Week 1 and a Vikings squad that can’t throw the ball. Suddenly, I’m not as impressed as I was two weeks ago with the Fish.
18. Washington Redskins
Previous Week: 20
Man, that game didn’t live up to the hype, did it? Once the Skins knew they had the Eagles beat thanks to Kevin Kolb’s dink and dunk routine, they kept the ball on the ground and out of Donovan McNabb’s hands. Leave it up to Skeletor to ruin the party.
19. Tennessee Titans
Previous Week: 15
The Titans have become the new Texans in the AFC South. Talented, but highly inconsistent.
20. Cincinnati Bengals
Previous Wee: 14
This might be the worst 2-2 team not named the Cardinals in the NFL right now, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they continue to drop. That said, Carson Palmer finally showed signs of life and what a day by T.O.
21. Denver Broncos
Previous Week: 23
I wonder if Bears fans are starting to wish they had Kyle Orton back under center instead of Jay Cutler. That was a nice win for the Broncos last week coming off their loss to the Colts. They were depleted and were playing on the road, yet hung in there and managed to earn a win in the end. Josh McDaniels’ team showed some grit last week.
22. Jacksonville Jaguars
Previous Week: 25
Almost every year without fail the Jaguars either beat the Colts or come close to beating them. Great kick, Josh Scobee.
23. St. Louis Rams
Previous Week: 28
As I wrote on Monday, what more could you ask for out of Sam Bradford? His interception total is high, but he’s been solid on third downs and in the red zone. He has also produced where it counts most: in the win column.
24. Seattle Seahawks
Previous Week: 21
Different year, same Seattle team. The Hawks’ play at home and on the road is night and day.
25. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Previous Week: 22
This is a big week for Raheem Morris’ team. Nobody believes that the Bucs are as good as their 2-1 record would indicate, but they have a chance to earn another victory this Sunday in Cincinnati. Not only are they playing a suspect Bengals team, but they’re also coming off a bye and have had two weeks of preparation. Let’s see what your team’s got, Raheem.
26. San Francisco 49ers
Previous Week: 24
Not to rub salt in the 49ers’ wounds, but if Nate Clements runs 10-15 yards and either gets out of bounds or slides down, the 49ers probably beat the Falcons last week. But because he wanted to score, he gave Roddy White a chance to pull off one of the best players of the year.
27. Oakland Raiders
Previous Week: 27
Even though he threw two interceptions, Bruce Gradkowski continues to breathe life into Oakland’s offense. Too bad he can’t have the same affect on the defense.
28. Arizona Cardinals
Previous Week: 26
The Cardinals were completely exposed last week for what they are: a declining team that needs to rebuild. I’d start with the quarterback position.
29. Cleveland Browns
Previous Week: 30
I’m going on record now: Seneca Wallace should remain the starter over Jake Delhomme. I’m not basing that statement off of the Browns’ win last week – I’m basing that off of Delhomme’s brutalness (brutalness?). Wallace gives Cleveland the best chance of winning.
30. Carolina Panthers
Previous Week: 29
Rookie quarterbacks are supposed to look bad, but Jimmy Clausen looks really bad. Not that it’s at all surprising based on his inexperience, but he looks completely overmatched.
31. Detroit Lions
Previous Week: 31
I want to move this team up just based on the effort they give week in and week out, but the Panthers almost beat the Saints last Sunday and the Browns actually won a game. Maybe next week Detroit, maybe next week…
32. Buffalo Bills
Previous Week: 32
What an abysmal effort against the Jets last week – and at home, no less. Buffalo fans don’t deserve this.
