LeGarrette Blount threw another punch! The horror!
I’m a big believer in the notion that history has a way of repeating itself.
But in the case of LeGarrette Blount, I don’t think there’s cause for concern.
Blount, as you’ll remember, was the former Oregon player that threw a haymaker to the jaw of Boise State defensive end Byron Hout following the Ducks’ 19-8 loss to the Broncos last year. Blount proceeded to act like a raving lunatic after the incident by trying to fight everyone from coaches to fans to the P.A. announcer, and was deservedly criticized for the incident.
He also paid his dues by being suspended for all but a handful of games late in the year and despite his skill level, he also went undrafted in April, largely because of the incident.
Now a member of the Tennessee Titans, Blount is making headlines again for punching another player – this time it was teammate Eric Bakhtiari who was on the receiving end of Blount’s knuckles during a Wednesday night practice, although it should be noted that Bakhtiari still had his helmet on.
Do a Google search on “LeGarrette Blount” and headlines such as, “Blount still packs a punch” and “LeGarrette Blount back to his old punching ways in Titans camp,” pop up.
Relax.
Do you know how many times players throw punches at each other during this time of year? We’re in the middle of August when players are trying to make rosters and are tired of going up against each other everyday in camp. Tempers flare – these things happen.
But because it’s Blount, now it’s a story. I get that your past follows you everywhere and it’s not like the media isn’t going to comment on the story, but some seem to be making a mountain out of a molehill here.
The bottom line is that Blount lost his cool, apologized to head coach Jeff Fisher and promised that it wouldn’t happen again. Fisher isn’t concerned about the incident and neither should anyone else. Plus, this isn’t Oregon – this is the National Football League. Blount is an undrafted rookie and if he continues to act up, the Titans are just going to send him packing.
Give the kid a chance.
