Is Donovan McNabb worth a first round pick?

One of the hot topics this offseason will be whether or not the Eagles will trade one or two of their quarterbacks. Michael Vick is the most likely candidate to be dealt, but there’s also a possibility that Philly commits to Kevin Kolb and thus makes Donovan McNabb available as well.
According to ESPN’s Sal Paolantonio, the Eagles have told teams that both McNabb and Kolb are not available for trade, although it’s likely that the team is just saying that to maintain its leverage. Considering McNabb is 33, injury prone and consistently comes up short in the playoffs, there’s no doubt that Andy Reid will at least listen to offers for the veteran QB. Three years ago, the Eagles asked for two first round picks in exchange for McNabb and while he has diminished value today, the team reportedly still wants at least a first rounder.
But is McNabb worth a first round pick? Well, that depends on what team it is. If the Bills or Rams are interested, then no, he isn’t. Neither Buffalo nor St. Louis is one Donovan McNabb away from competing, so acquiring a 33-year-old quarterback in exchange for a high draft pick would be unwise. Either one of those teams would be better off going with Vick, who is a low-risk, high-reward option at this point in his career because he could be had for a low draft pick.
On the other hand, a first rounder may be worth the price for a team like the Broncos. Denver was on the cusp of making the playoffs last year before collapsing in the second half and if the team can settle its beef with receiver Brandon Marshall, then he and McNabb might do some damage together. I’m not suggesting that McNabb would make the Broncos a Super Bowl contender, but he’s an upgrade over Kyle Orton and they could challenge for a playoff berth at the very least.
Another team that might value McNabb that much is Minnesota. In fact, the Vikings make the most sense given that they have a low first round pick and Brad Childress was McNabb’s former quarterback coach in Philadelphia. McNabb knows Childress’ offense, so the transition would be seamless and he would benefit from playing on a roster that is already built to win now.
The problem of course, is that Brett Favre is just about to fire up his annual retirement dance and could wind up screwing the Vikings if he can’t make a quick decision. One would assume that Childress and Minnesota want Favre back, but if he takes all summer to make a decision then the Vikings will have to set a deadline. After all, they can’t miss out on acquiring McNabb (if that’s a realistic option, that is) because Favre can’t make up his fickle mind.
Outside of the ones listed above, I don’t know what other team would make sense for McNabb. The Browns could make a play for him, but considering they select at No. 7, the price tag would be too steep. A second rounder may be worth it because they have two selections in the third round, but even that might be too much given how many holes Mike Holmgren has to fill this offseason.
