#9: Bobcats draft D.J. Augustin

Coach Z’s scouting report: Nobody dribbled the ball more in college than he has… sometimes he looked like Marques Haynes… will need to get stronger and better on the defensive end… the best passer of all the point guards in the draft… will be a solid addition for someone…

I guess the Bobcats aren’t too high on Ray Felton or Brook Lopez. I suppose they could be drafting Augustin as Felton’s backup, but that doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. Jay Bilas is high on Augustin, but the knock on him is that he’s too small defensively. He had a great season, but looked pretty bad against Derrick Rose, who pretty much ate Augustin up.

Next up are the Nets, who have traded away Richard Jefferson today and have seen Danilo Gallinari and Joe Alexander drafted ahead of them. Brook Lopez is a possibility as is Brandon Rush, who has seen his stock rise in the last couple of weeks.

#8: Milwaukee drafts Joe Alexander

Note: Jeff Van Gundy just said that the Knicks need Stephon Marbury to play up to his potential. I don’t know why, but I find that extremely funny.

Coach Z’s scouting report: With another year in college, he might have developed into a more athletic Wally Szczerbiak… great athlete who competes on every play… Bobby Huggins and John Beilein prepared him well… needs better range on his jumper and quicker feet on defense… also needs to develop his handling skills to become a star…

Jay Bilas is calling him a face up 4-man, so maybe Alexander can play power forward. If that’s the case, I like the pick. He is stronger and tougher than most 6’8″ players, and he’s extremely athletic, so the kid has a ton of upside. GMs have been in love with his work ethic and competitiveness, so he’ll fit in well with Scott Skiles’ fiery personality. I’m so happy that they didn’t take Randolph…

Next up is Charlotte – this pick looks like it has Brook Lopez written all over it.

#7: Eric Gordon goes to the Clippers

Coach Z’s scouting report: Strong and aggressive and a bear when going to the hoop… good at creating contact and getting the call, but may not get as many in the NBA… tremendous deep 3 shooter early in season, but fell off… showed great potential early in the season but played poorly down the stretch… bad shot selection might keep him from reaching his considerable potential…

With Corey Maggette likely on the way out, Gordon seems like a good fit in Clipperland. He was projected to go in the top three until a late season slump raised some questions. With Elton Brand and Chris Kaman in the post, he should get plenty of open looks.

My Bucks are next. Before the Jefferson trade, I would have been happy with Joe Alexander here, but now I don’t know what to think. I’m still bummed about Love being off the board. If they decide to go with a guard, Bayless is a possibility. I just hope they don’t draft Anthony Randolph. The last thing the Bucks need is a project.

#6: Knicks select Danilo Gallinari

Coach Z’s scouting report: Fran Frashilla loves his versatility which might mean that he’s a jack of all trades and master of none… since the competition is so different, foreign players are so tough to gauge, but like most international players, he can shoot it well…

I’m sure the D’Antoni connection helped here. He’s a skilled small forward that fills a need in New York. It’s funny to hear the Knicks fans boo a player that they’ve never seen play. Typical. Anyway, this does nothing to address the lack of a floor general, but New York should be able to acquire a point guard this offseason.

Next up are the Clippers. It looks like Eric Gordon here, though Jerryd Bayless is a possibility as well. The Clippers are hurting in the backcourt.

#5: Grizzlies draft Kevin Love

Coach Z’s scouting report: Too small, too slow, too streaky… these labels are applied to any non-athlete that enters the league… can rebound it without jumping and can make shots when it counts… good low post passer… if he remakes his body he could become an All-Star, if not he’ll be a solid 10-year player… ability to rebound and pass will make him an asset on any team…

Crap. Crap. Crap. I was hoping he’d slip to Milwaukee, but it wasn’t to be. He’s lost a ton of weight since the season ended and tested a lot better than expected at the combine. (He has a 35″ vertical, folks). He is extremely skilled and knows how to play the game. His outlet passing will do wonders for the Grizzlies’ up-tempo attack. I’m really bummed right now.

The Knicks are next up. Mike D’Antoni wants a guard who can push tempo, but with Mayo and Westbrook off the board, it’s not clear if they’ll settle on Jerryd Bayless. Joe Alexander and Danillo Gallinari have also been mentioned as possibilities here.
