CAN YOU HEAR THE POPPING SOUND

Bubbles burst all across the country last night. Teams needing wins to solidify their entre in to the NCAA tournament came up empty handed.

In the Big 12, Baylor lost to 12th seeded Colorado. This is huge since Baylor was only one game above .500 in the league and Texas A & M won their first round game. The combination could leave the Bears on the outside looking in. I doubt that they will take 6 teams from the Big 12.

Over in the PAC-10, Arizona lost to Stanford. Once and for all let’s stop talking about Arizona’s close losses. They are out and awaiting the return of LUte Olsen next year. Also, look for Kevin O’Neill to be out as well. Arizona State didn’t help themselves last night with their loss. The most crushing blow was to Oregon. Washington State beat the Ducks in what could be the last game for Ernie Kent. One final note on the Pac-10, there are rumors that Ben Braun could be out at Cal after another loss to UCLA. Good guy and great coach who just hasn’t been able to get the Bears over the hump.

Down south in the SEC, Ole Miss lost to Georgia and Florida lost to Alabama. The Gators were 8-8 in the league while Ole Miss finished 7-9 in conference. They definitely pulled a Clemson from last year. Great start agianst bad teams and a bad finish against good teams. Do you think Billy Donovan is having second thoughts about the Maigc job. Mark my words, whenever a coach leaves a job and then comes back it always ends in a bad way.

In the ACC, the young, schizophrenic Maryland Terrapins ended their tourney hopes with a loss to Boston College. Wake Forest’s dream of going to hte tourney in the memory of Skip Prosser was ruined by Florida State.

WHO BENEFITS

Illinois State and VCU are back in due to the BCS conference bubble teams falling short in their conference tournament. Kind of a switch, usually it is the big schools hoping their are no upsets in the small conferences.

Billy Crystal gets a piece in debut

Billy Crystal made his New York Yankees’ debut against the Pirates Thursday and to the surprise of probably no one, he was punched out. However, he did draw a 3-1 count and didn’t go down without a fight.

I don’t care what anyone says – he looked good up there for 60 years old.

The real problem with MLB – other than the juice

The “Hell yes, Guy!” makes a good point about MLB in one of his latest blogs.

What it comes down to is: there are 15 teams out of the 30 in MLB that matter when the season starts. Sure, there might be a surprise or two, but accounting for the annual let downs, the numbers stay just about the same. As an Indians fan I’ve had plenty of years in each of the situations, even just in recent memory. Good years (90’s) bad years (early 2000’s) surprises (2005) and let downs (2006). I guess I would say, the most disappointing thing is that there is very little competition. I’m not saying that over 162 games there aren’t games where a bad team beats a better team; I’m just saying that we all know over the long hall there are some teams that have no shot. All you can do is pray that you’re not rooting for one.

This is part of the reason why the NFL has become so popular. Not everyone likes parity (in fact, there are more than a handful of fans who long for the “good ol’ days” when there were a couple of great teams everybody gunned for each season), but there’s no denying how exciting it is that a team can turn around its misfortune so quickly. It breeds hope after your team just went 4-12.

But in baseball, it’s a rarity for a team to jump from last to first. Baseball is all about the haves and the have-nots.

Small Packages– Big Players

Two players to watch in the NCAA Tournament are Adam Emnecker of Drake and Jeremiah Dominguez of Portland State. Both point guards led their teams into the Big Dance and were named MVP of their respective conferences. After watching Emnecker all year and Dominguez last night I fell in love with both players ability to win games without scoring points.

They are prototypical point guards who set up their teammates for easy baskets. While the major media people only watch BCS level leagues and pump up those players, I will give you a heads up. Find out when Drake and Portland State play in the NCAA tournament and tune them in. You will be treated to FUNdamental basketball at it’s best.

How about the job that Scott Sutton has done at Oral Roberts. After bowing out to UMKC in the first round of the conference tournament 2 straight years he has went on a run that has seen the Golden Eagles win 3 straight Summit League Championships and finish runner-up in the other year (lost at the buzzer). A great run this year considering he lost his two best players (and two of the best to ever play at ORU– Caleb Green and Ken Tutt).
