Gasol traded to the Lakers?

This has yet to be confirmed by either team, but…

The Commercial Appeal has learned that the Grizzlies have traded Pau Gasol to the Los Angeles Lakers for center Kwame Brown, rookie guard Javaris Crittenton and first-round draft picks in 2008 and 2010.

Wow.

At first glance, this looks like a terrific deal for the Lakers, who get an All-Star caliber post player at the expense of Kwame Brown’s expiring contract, a nice young point guard prospect in Crittenton (who is expendable because of Jordan Farmar) and a couple of (probable) late first round picks.

Gasol is dinged up with a back injury, but it must not be too serious for this trade to go through. He could be going through the physical process, which may be the reason for the delay in the announcement.

Assuming this goes through, Gasol can play center until Andrew Bynum comes back, and then he is capable of moving to power forward with Lamar Odom sliding to small forward, giving the Lakers a potent lineup that will include Farmar/Derek Fisher, Kobe, Odom, Gasol and Bynum. If that group gels, the Lakers are suddenly a serious contender in the West.

Gasol will provide the Lakers with their first true back-to-the-basket post threat since Shaq left in 2004.

Kobe isn’t going anywhere, folks.

Duke Owns the Second Half

For the second straight game Duke found themselves down by nine. And just as it was against Maryland, the Blue Devils used a shooting barage of three pointers to overcome the deficit and beat North Carolina State, 92-72. They shot a phenomenal 66% from the field and hit 7 of 11 three point shots in the second half.

“You can’t play too much better than we did in the second half,” Coach K said. That might be the understatement of the year. With the win Duke sits alone atop the ACC with the showdown with North Carolina on the horizon.

Four players scored 18 or more for the Blue Devils led by 22 from Greg Paulus. Freshman Kyle Singler added 19 while Gerald Henderson and DeMarcus Nelson added 18 a piece.

Duke’s high octane offense looks to be in great shape as they prepare for a trip to Chapel Hill.

Wisconsin Sends a Message

For all the naysayers who thought Wisconsin would take a step back due to graduation losses, Bo Ryan has a different take for you. Last night the Badgers controlled Indiana from start to finish enroute to a 62-49 win. Theri containment defense held IU to 34% field goal shooting and limited outstanding freshman Eric Gordon to just 16 points.

Watching them you see an extension of Coach Ryan’s personality. They are tough as nails and team first all the way. From the overall play of Jim Krabenhoft to the gritty determination of Marcus Landry, they embody the blue collar spirit.

Although they lost, DJ White put up another double-double and showed why he is my clear cut favorite for MVP of the league. He finished with 22 points and 17 rebounds. However, with Gordon playing with a sore wrist the Hoosiers were unable to get anyone else to step up in the scoring column.

With the win Wisconsin moved into a four way tie for first place with Indiana, Purdue and Michigan State…

I will have a chance to see Wisconsin in person next week when they travel to Iowa. Join us as the game will be telecast on the Big Ten Network.

Over in Ann Arbor, Tubby Smith collected his 400th career win as Minnesota knocked off Michigan 77-65. The Gophers are now 13-6 and inching closer to an NCAA tournament bid. Congratulations to Coach Smith for his accomplishment! He is one of the classiest guys in the profession.

Turley rips Upshaw

Kansas City Chiefs offensive tackle Kyle Turley ripped NFLPA leader Gene Upshaw Thursday for the way he has treated former players.

“You look at the situation that we’re in now, and it’s the direct fault of Gene Upshaw, the guys that have come before him, and the guys that are in these positions now,” Turley said. “He’s not doing his job, and he needs to do it. He’s got every opportunity to, and he’s not, for whatever reason, and he’s benefiting every year from a $7 million salary from Players Inc. and the union. It’s near criminal how some of these guys are being treated.”

“I have not yet seen Gene Upshaw or the players union or the National Football League, for that matter, have one person come forward and stand on their side and say that they are doing what they’re supposed to,” Turley said. “I had to stand alongside these men and not be associated with the neglect that is going on for too long.”

I completely agree with Turley. I had the opportunity a while back to sit down with former Chief and Lion Richard “Dirt” Jordan and he had very similar things to say about Upshaw. According to Jordan, the NFLPA has set up money-management programs for current players, so they’re going to be fine in the long run. It’s mind boggling how Upshaw simply refuses to help out players from his era, however.

Early look at the 2008 NFL Draft prospects

I feel it’s a bit absurd to do a mock draft before the Super Bowl, but that doesn’t mean I’m above taking a look at some of the draft’s more intriguing prospects.
