Looking around the country there are eight teams still endefeated in their own leagues. Led by #1 ranked Mephis who has not lost inside or outside of their league. They are as close to a sure bet to go undefeated in Conference USA as any team left . As a matter of fact the only team that stands in their way of a perfect regular season is Tennessee. They will play the Volunteer in late February. Should be a great game!!
Staying at the top of the league in the ACC is a resurgent Duke. Hard to believe I am saying resurgent about a team that won over 25 games last year. Their big showdon comes in another week when they match up with North Carolina.
Keeping it with a Southern Flavor, both Davidson (13-0) and North Carolina-Asheville (11-0) are still perfect. Asheville won their big showdown with conference defending champion Winthrop. While the Stephen Curry led Davidson squad has not been tested as of yet.
Swinging all the way to the left Coast, Gonzaga is off to a 6-0 and even though they have been challenged by St. Mary’s this year they still look like the team to beat.
Moving to the Midwest, Oral Roberts is 10-0 in Summitt League play. Their start breaks the old mark held by the 2004-05 UMKC team which started the league at 9-0 before losing a controversial game against Chicago State. In the Missouri Valley, the Drake Bulldogs are still living a dream season. They own the second longest winning streak in the country (18) and are 11-0 in league play.
And it should be noted that Steve Donahue has Cornell off to their best start in league play at 4-0 in the Ivies.
For my money, Memphis and Davidson will be the only teams to go undefeated in league play. And for teams in the lower leagues (Summit and Big South) the regular season doesn’t matter if you don’t win the conference tournament. Just ask Oral Roberts who won 25 games two years ago and stayed home after being upset by Oakland in the conference tourney.
It’s rare that the Super Bowl lives up to the hype, but this year’s game surely did. Still, we all know that the Super Bowl is about more than just football. Companies pay a pretty penny for a thirty-second commercial during the big game, knowing that it will generate a ton of business. Here are my five favorite spots from this year’s game:
5. Budweiser Clydesdale Team Commercial
That’s a great twist on the “Rocky” theme.
4. Jackie Moon for Bud Light
Once again, Will Ferrell kills.
3. Carrier Pigeons
FedEx consistently produces good Super Bowl commercials.
2. E*Trade Baby
Talking babies are usually pretty creepy, but the E*Trade baby rules.
1. Interview
That’s so simple, yet hilarious.
I, like many people, struggle with faith, spirituality and religion on a daily basis. I’m not sure what waits for us on the “other side,” or if anything waits at all.
But tonight, after the Giants denied Randy Moss a Super Bowl ring, I feel better about all of that.
Moss is supremely talented, but he sleepwalked through two seasons in Oakland, sandbagging it so hard that the Raiders eventually gave him away to the best franchise in football for a measly fourth round pick. And, for a while, it looked as if Moss was going to get a Super Bowl ring.
But a higher power…or karma…or maybe just a great Giants defense…something intervened tonight to keep that from happening.
Thank you, whatever or whomever is ultimately responsible. We are all grateful. (Well, all of us outside of New England, anyway.)
1. It took Peyton Manning nine tries to win a Super Bowl. It only took Eli Manning four and he had fewer weapons at his disposal. The media shouldn’t skimp giving Eli credit throughout this week, because he certainly deserved it for what he did this season. He stayed calm under fire the entire game and never seemed rattled, which has been his MO throughout his short career. He proved doubters wrong and while he wasn’t overly impressive, he was steady and efficient.
2. The Giants proved tonight what a fierce pass rush could do for a defense. Michael Strahan, Justin Tuck and the rest of New York’s front seven dominated a usually stout Patriots’ offensive line. Tom Brady was constantly under fire and often looked for check downs instead of going down field. It was clear he was keying on the Giants’ pressure instead of just feeling it out and reacting to it. Not that I’m telling any professional athlete to retire, but is there a better time for Strahan to hang up the cleats? What a game he had.
3. Not to take anything away from the Giants, because their defense was unbelievable, but this was the worst the Patriots played all season. They were going for a perfect season and they appeared to lack emotion, energy and were completely lethargic overall. Dare I say it – they looked unprepared, too. From the first Giants’ field goal on their opening drive to Plaxico Burress’ game-winning touchdown, they completely outplayed the Patriots. The G-Men had an answer for everything the Patriots did, which is a testament to Tom Coughlin, Steve Spagnuolo and the rest of New York’s coaching staff. Spagnuolo might have earned himself the Redskins’ head coaching job with the way he had his defense prepared tonight.
4. If it weren’t for Wes Welker, the Pats might not have scored double-digit points. Every time New England needed a big play, Welker got open and fought for first downs. He outplayed Brady, Randy Moss, Laurence Maroney and the entire Patriot offensive line. Without him, Bill Belichick and Josh McDaniel’s brilliant offense wouldn’t have even scored 14 points. And how about the block Welker threw to spring a screen pass for a first down in the first half? He was the Patriots offense.
5. Is it just me or was Rodney Harrison brutal tonight? He whiffed on a chance to recover a fumble in the first half and then he had poor position on a jump ball that gave the Giants new life on their game-winning touchdown drive. David Tyree made a hell of a catch, but Manning threw a duck and Harrison needs to knock that ball down anyway he can.
