Spags sticking with Giants

Steve Spagnuolo has decided to remain defensive coordinator of the New York Giants. Spagnuolo was interviewed by the Redskins earlier this week, but was never officially offered the job.

Steve Spagnuolo will remain with the New York Giants and is not a candidate for the Redskins job according to a source with knowledge of the situation. A formal announcement is likely to come later today, with a new three-year deal from the Giants on its way, too.

Spagnuolo returned to the New York area this morning. Jim Fassel was seen by many as the frontrunner to get this job, with Spagnuolo emerging late. It would appear to be headed that way now.

I think it’s novel that Spags is sticking with the Giants. If the Giants’ defense plays as well as they did this year, he’ll have plenty of offers again in the future.

Duke holds off UNC

It was a battle of #2 vs. #3 last night, and the Blue Devils held off the Tar Heels’ comeback attempt, ultimately prevailing, 89-78.

Duke is undersized, and had a tough time matching up with Tyler Hansbrough inside. He finished with 28 points and 18 rebounds. However, the rest of the team combined for just 16-48 (33%) from the field, while the Blue Devils countered by shooting 13-29 (45%) from long range. That included a blistering 6 of 8 performance from Greg Paulus, who led six Dookies in double figures with 18.

North Carolina was without point guard Ty Lawson, and it showed, as the Tar Heels committed 20 turnovers, many of them unforced.

With a win at UNC, Duke has the inside track now for the ACC title and the #1 seed in the East, which is vital because the first four games would be played in Raleigh and Charlotte.

Video surfaces of Martinez, Marichal at cockfight

A video recently posted on YouTube.com shows New York Mets’ pitcher Pedro Martinez and Hall of Famer Juan Marichal at a cockfight.

Martinez and Marichal laugh before releasing the roosters. The two took part as honorary “soltadores,” the word used to describe the person who puts the animal to fight.

The animal released by Martinez appears to be killed on the video, which was posted Tuesday. The fight takes place in the Coliseo de Gallos (Rooster Coliseum) in Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic’s biggest cockfighting venue. Cockfighting is legal and popular in the Dominican Republic.

I wonder if the Animal Humane Society will show up to the Mets’ spring training next week in protest like they did at the Falcons’ camp when Michael Vick was accused of dog fighting. Or are roosters not the Humane Society’s problem?

No word yet on if Martinez and Marichal bet on “Little Jerry Seinfield.”

Gasol’s Laker debut

Gasol posted 24 points, 12 rebounds and four assists in a 105-90 win over the Nets last night, and it looks like he’s going to fit in just fine with the Lakers.

Despite having just one practice and one shootaround with the Lakers, Gasol was in the starting lineup and received a loud ovation when he was announced during introductions.

“I’m starting to realize how big the Lakers are around the country and around the world,” Gasol said before the game. “I had a little bit of a feel when they coming (into Memphis) because I see more Lakers jerseys than Grizzlies jerseys in the stands. But that happens everywhere.”

Living in Southern California, I know more than a few Laker fans, and they are all riding high after this trade. (And they should be.)

McNamee turns over evidence linking Clemens to enhancers

Roger Clemens’ former trainer Brian McNamee has turned over physical evidence that will show that the former Cy Young winner used performance-enhancing drugs.

“This is evidence the government has that we believe will corroborate Brian in every significant way,” said McNamee lawyer Earl Ward.

McNamee’s attorneys would not discuss the details of the evidence, but according to a source close to the former Yankee strength and conditioning coach, McNamee gave the Justice Department’s BALCO investigators vials with traces of steroids and growth hormone, as well as blood-stained syringes and gauze pads that may contain the Rocket’s DNA.

Justice Department officials have sent the evidence to a lab for testing, and if the materials do indeed contain traces of drugs and blood, prosecutors may attempt to get a court order for a DNA sample from Clemens.

McNamee plans to discuss the evidence with the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform tomorrow, when he is interviewed by the panel’s attorneys in preparation for next Wednesday’s congressional hearing on the challenges Clemens has raised about the Mitchell Report.

McNamee = check mate.
