Painter Paints a Masterpiece

Matt Painter gets my vote for Coach of the Year. He has led the Purdue Boilermakers to the top of the Big Ten while starting four freshman. The youngest team in Division I pulled off the upset on Saturday of knocking off #11th ranked Wisconsin. I watched them two weeks ago win on the road at Iowa and was very impressed. After watching them on Saturday I am convinced. He has taken this young team and made them tough as nails. His pressure defense is the best in the league. Freshmen Robbie Hummell and Etwaun Moore led the way for the Boilermakers. I wouldn’t want to play them come tourney time….

Another youngster that continues to make waves is Michael Beasley. He put together another double double as he scored 33 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in Kansas State’s route of Iowa State. He has 16 double-doubles and is only six shy of the record set by Carmelo Anthony. Not only is he the best freshman in the country, but his coach, Frank Martin, maybe the best rookie coach in the country. He took over a team with nine newcomers and has got them believing in defense. They are playing with the same type of defensive intensity he learned from his mentor, Bob Huggins. Next up for the Wildcats is Kansas. Better bring your “A” game Jayhawks.

Al Davis to Lane Kiffin: Resign immediately

In a shocking development, ESPN.com has learned that Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis has asked head coach Lane Kiffin to resign.

Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis has been pushing for coach Lane Kiffin to resign and is considering Dennis Green as a potential replacement, sources close to Kiffin and the team said.

Davis has gone so far as to draft a letter of resignation for Kiffin to sign, a source said. Kiffin has refused to do so but has dared Davis to fire him instead. The letter, the source said, was sent to Kiffin two weeks ago.

In the letter sent to Kiffin’s legal representatives, Davis stated that only he would have control over his staff and full personnel decisions, sources said. According to a source close to Kiffin, Davis had promised Kiffin when he hired him that he would have more control over staff and personnel matters than recent Raiders coaches. Kiffin was allowed five offensive assistants and to name his own staff when he took the job after the 2006 season.

Davis has officially lost it. He went against conventional wisdom by hiring Kiffin last year and now after only one season he’s demanding for him to resign? And he possibly wants to hire Denny Green? Other one fabulous post-game rant, what did Green do in Arizona that would compel Davis to want to make him the Raiders next had coach?

Just lose your mind, baby.

Panic in Patriot Town! Panic in Patriot Town

The Internet is abuzz today with the news that New England Patriots’ golden boy Tom Brady has missed not one, but two practices the past two days.

For the second consecutive day, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady wasn’t in the locker room or at practice when reporters and cameramen were allowed inside Friday.

During the 45-minute period in the locker room, several cameramen lingered near his locker, but he didn’t show up. Nor was he there for the first 12 minutes of practice that the media were allowed to watch.

Asked if he could say whether Brady would practice Friday, New England coach Bill Belichick said, “Not now. We’ll see.”

What is the media to do without Brady giving them cookie-cutter answers to their repetitive questions? FOXSports.com is running a poll that asks, “Where is Tom Brady” and even lists “Gisele’s apartment” as one of the choices.

Relax Internet world – he’ll play.

All-Star starters announced

The popularity contest that is the All-Star fan balloting process is complete. here are your starters:

EAST

G – Jason Kidd
G – Dwyane Wade
F – LeBron James
F – Kevin Garnett
C – Dwight Howard

WEST

G – Allen Iverson
G – Kobe Bryant
F – Carmelo Anthony
F – Tim Duncan
C – Yao Ming

All in all, I don’t think the fans did such a bad job this season. I made my picks in a recent column, and all ten starters earned spots on my rosters. It would have been nice to see Caron Butler get the starting nod over Dwyane Wade, but knew there wasn’t a chance in hell of that happening. In the West, I didn’t have either Nugget starting, and I had Duncan starting at center. In my opinion, Chris Paul and Steve Nash deserve to start more than Iverson and ‘Melo.

Still, the fans didn’t make the mistake of putting T-Mac in the lineup and it makes me wonder if the coaches will vote him onto the roster. He already said that he didn’t really want to play in the All-Star Game, so hopefully the coaches will give the spot to someone more deserving.

The reserves will be announced next Thursday (1/31) on TNT.
