Somebody get Jim Mora a map – he might be confused about where Washington is

Seattle Seahawks assistant head coach Jim Mora is set to interview for the vacant head-coaching job in Washington. Does Jim know that it isn’t that Washington?

Just over a year ago, Mora went on a Washington (the state of, not DC) radio show and blabbed to the host about his desire to coach at his alma mater – The University of Washington.

Interviewer: If it ever works out, if there’s an opening, and you’re available, we want you to coach the Huskies.
Mora: Well, I really have a lot of respect for Ty, and I know he’ll do a great job. But if he ever decides to move on, and get in the NFL or you know, go back to Notre Dame or whatever, if that job’s open you’ll find me at the friggin’ head of the line with my resume in my hand ready to take that job.
Interviewer: If you’re available.
Mora: It doesn’t even matter if I’m available.
Interviewer: You would leave the Falcons for that job?
Mora: Absolutely.

Hey good news for him – he doesn’t have to leave the Falcons job now! He can go right to the friggin’ head of the line with his resume in hand, although he might be a little disappointed to find out that DC is a good 2,700-plus miles away from his apparent Huskies’ dream job.

No Colts-Patriots? Well, boo-hoo

Nick Canepa of the San Diego Union-Tribune hit the nail on the head when he writes that everyone needs to get over the fact that there won’t be a Colts-Patriots rematch.

I’m sick of this “marquee game” manure. I’m sick of the TV networks playing the ratings game..I’m sick of it all. Why play the games? Why bother? Just get those “American Idol” idiots to pick the Super Bowl finalists. Don’t have a regular season. Don’t have playoffs. Go straight to the Roman numerals.

This week we’re getting it from all sides. Chargers-Patriots isn’t nearly as sexy as Colts-Patriots. I don’t question that, although the Chargers have better players than the Colts.

“You can’t always get what you want,” I read in “USA Today” during a 90-hour flight from Indianapolis back to San Diego.

And that, no doubt, is true. The author knows what he’s doing. But it’s too damn bad. America did not get Colts-Patriots and Cowboys-Packers. That’s a shame. Win a game. Be somebody. Don’t go snorkeling with Jessica Simpson. Cut out a commercial or two and throw to someone other than Antonio Cromartie.

I’ll be the first to admit that I was disappointed that there won’t be another Colts-Patriots grudge match, but Canepa is right. The Colts didn’t win – the Chargers did. Peyton Manning and the Colts didn’t step up – (gulp) Billy Volek and the Chargers did. Who’s to say that the Chargers aren’t the ones destined to knock off the Patriots? The game will still be played whether the fans like the matchup or not, so stop the crying.

Bynum’s injury could derail Lakers’ terrific start

The Lakers are off to a great start this season, but the early word on Andrew Bynum’s knee injury is that he’s going to miss eight weeks. It looks like a dislocated kneecap, which won’t require surgery but will require a lot of rest.

The team has won six straight and is 25-11, which puts them just a half game behind the Suns in the Pacific. They play in Seattle tonight and then they have the Suns, Nuggets, Spurs, Mavs and Cavs over the next two weeks. Then, after a home game against the Knicks, they play 12 of the next 13 games on the road, so if the team struggles without Bynum, things could get ugly very quickly.

In the 25 games that Bynum started, he averaged 14.6 points and 10.7 rebounds, and shot an eye-popping 65.6% from the field. During the team’s six-game win streak, he averaged 17.3 points, 12.2 rebounds and 2.3 blocks, which are borderline All-Star numbers.

Kwame Brown will likely be the main guy to try to fill Bynum’s shoes, and while he’s a decent defensive center, he just doesn’t have Bynum’s feel on offense.

If the Lakers go into a major slide, Kobe may not stay quiet on those trade demands he made last summer, though you’d think that Bynum’s play would have Bryant feeling pretty good about the Lakers’ short-term future.

College players pissed that there’s no playoff, too

It seems that every morning another highly touted underclassman declares eligible for the NFL draft. Arkansas’ Darren McFadden, Rutgers’ Ray Rice, UCF’s Kevin Smith, WVU’s Steve Slaton and Vernon Gholston of Ohio State are just some of the more well-known prospects that have decided to forego their senior seasons and enter the NFL draft.

That must mean only one thing: Just like fans, college football players must be upset that there’s no playoff system, too. It’s the only explanation that I can come up with to explain why these kids aren’t staying in school for another year. It’s either that, or the fact that they’re about to get a butt load of money…no, no – it must be the fact that they’re pissed that there’s no playoff system.

Pete Fiutak of FOXSports.com breaks down what round the top underclassmen are projected to be taken, as well as whether or not it’s a good move to come out early.
