Did Rodriguez pull a Petrino?

With the news that Rich Rodriguez is leaving West Virginia to become the next head coach at Michigan, some are now arguing that he’s no better than Bobby Petrino.

Rodriguez met with his team for 10 minutes this afternoon to tell them he is leaving, and that he’s not going to coach in the Fiesta Bowl, all but ensuring a blowout loss to Oklahoma.

Rodriguez then walked back to his office, leaving players “somber-looking,” the reports say.

Thanks a bunch, Coach Rod.

I will not debate the merits of Michigan versus West Virginia. What upsets WVU fans is that, no more than a week ago, Rodriguez told West Virginia media “you’re stuck with me.”

He’s a liar.

I think it’s a valid argument that what R-Rod did to WVU was no better than what Petrino did to Louisville and Atlanta. Did Rodriguez lie about not jumping ship? Yes, although certainly not as bad as Petrino, who on Monday evening guaranteed Falcons owner Arthur Blank that he would be back next year, only to do the “Woo Pig Sooey” chant with Arkansas cheerleaders less than 24 hours later. Did Rodriguez leave a team in the lurch? Yes, although once again, not as bad as walking out on an NFL team with three games left to go on the schedule.

Is what Rodriguez did open for criticism? Absolutely. Is he Bobby Petrino? Well, there can only be one Bobby Petrino…and he’s off somewhere practicing the Gator Chomp or some other college football tradition, you know, just in case.

Monday Morgue

Here what local NFL columnists are saying in the wake of their teams losing on Sunday:

– When it comes to December, the Cowboys of 2007 look way too much like the Cowboys of 2006, writes Dallas Morning News columnist Tim Colishaw.

– David Steele of the Baltimore Sun now realizes how low the Ravens can go when they lost to the previously winless Dolphins.

– Drew Sharp of the Detroit Free Press warns that the real Lions are back, meaning this season could still get a whole lot worse.

– Steve Serby of the New York Post says that Dr. Evil and his Greatriots prevailed yet again over the Jets.

– Mark Bradley of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution writes that the Falcons reached a new low in their wretched season with a 34-point loss to the Bucs.

– Jason Whitlock of the Kansas City Star writes that there’s no reasonable explanation for why the Chiefs are playing the way they are.

Kansas–As Good as Advertised

The Kansas Jayhawks are as good as advertised. I had an opportunity to catch them against a good Ohio University team yesterday at the Sprint Center in Kansas City. They manhandled Ohio from start to finish. And mind you this is an Ohio team that just handed Maryland a rare home loss a couple days prior. What is most impressive about the Jayhawks is their depth in the backcourt and their defensive execution.

Their rotation on ball screens was the best of any team I have seen in 25 years of coaching. The ability to pressure, rotate and recover was phenomenal. And their depth is unbelievable.

When you bring Brandon Rush (a lottery pick) and Sherron Collins (he might be their best player) off the bench it would give any coach nightmares. When Rush and Collins get fully healthy, one could only imagine the havoc they will wreak. Combine those two with Mario Chalmers (another future NBA’er) and steady Russell Robinson and you have the best quartet of guards in the country.

De La Salle nips Centennial for CA state title

It was one of the greatest comebacks I’ve ever seen. In the California Division I high school football championship, perennial powerhouse De La Salle dominated Corona Centennial in the first half, jumping out to a 24-7 lead at the break. Things looked even grimmer for the Huskies when De La Salle scored again in the third quarter, increasing its lead to 31-7.

The Huskies (13-2) made it a game by scoring 24 consecutive points in the second half to tie the score, 31-31, with 8:17 remaining. Their big break came with the Spartans leading, 31-15, late in the third quarter.

Michael Czyz, punting for De La Salle inside its own 10, kicked the ball into up-back Jeff Stroud and the ball caromed into the end zone, where it was recovered by De La Salle for a safety, cutting the deficit to 31-17.

Centennial then started the ensuing drive at midfield, picked up a first down on fourth and five on a 10-yard reverse by Marsel Posey and then scored on a 34-yard pass from Matt Scott to Ricky Marvray, who broke a tackle at the 10 and scored to cut the deficit to 31-24 with 14.9 seconds left in the third quarter.

De La Salle led 36-31 with five minutes to play in the fourth quarter, but Centennial was unable to convert on a crucial 4th and 2 deep in Spartan territory. Centennial elected to try the option, a play that the Huskies used all season but one that didn’t have much success against the Spartans. Tailback Ryan Bass was stuffed for a loss and De La Salle took over on downs.

On De La Salle’s next possession, the Centennial defense forced a punt, but the Huskies’ final drive was cut short when the Spartans’ Blair Wishom picked off Matt Scott to effectively end the game, 36-31.

Both teams showed a ton of resiliency, which is just the kind of thing you want to see in a state championship game.

Dismal franchise for sale!

For Sale: Putrid (and we mean that in the best sense): Miami Dolphins franchise.

Asking Price: $19.99, but willing to negotiate.

Additional Parts: Will throw in a 1972 Miami Dolphins poster (you know they went undefeated that year, right?), one (1) Don Shula autographed place mat from “Shula’s Restaurant” and one (1) Mercury Morris.

Description: This wonderful offer is for the current Miami Dolphins organization. This team may be 42 years old, but it’s still in mint condition. Sure, at 0-13 it doesn’t sound like a great offer, but think about the location of the franchise and who wouldn’t want to wear teal full time? This is a re-builders dream and remember, we once had Dan Marino!

Warning: Needs new quarterback, offensive line and an entire defense. No buy backs.
