Pittsburgh Steelers’ rookie defensive back Anthony Smith is guaranteeing victory over the undefeated Patriots this Sunday.
“People keep asking me if we’re ready for the Patriots,” Smith said. “They should be asking if they’re ready for us.”
Is Smith so confident that he is willing to copy one of former Pittsburgh linebacker Joey Porter’s familiar motivational ploys by guaranteeing the Steelers will win?
“We’re going to win,” Smith said. “Yeah, I can guarantee a win. As long as we come out and do what we got to do. Both sides of the ball are rolling, and if our special teams come through for us, we’ve got a good chance to win.”
I love that football is an emotional game and players feed off that. However, the guarantee is tired and so is the “respect card” for that matter. Tom Brady has subtly pulled the respect card out a few times this year, which is completely ridiculous. No player in the entire NFL gets more respect from the media than Tom Brady. And for that matter, no team gets more respect than the New England Patriots so please, just shut up and play the game.
For the record, I actually think the Steelers might pull of the upset this week. However, if they do lose, I want the first media member who enters their locker room to stick a microphone right in Smith’s face and ask him what happened. Somebody has to stop the guarantee.
