The Dallas Cowboys have signed quarterback Tony Romo to a six-year, $67.5 million extension according to Rotoworld.com (via Ed Werder of ESPN). Thirty-one million of the contract is guaranteed.

The guaranteed money is even more than Peyton Manning received, but the total deal is reasonable in this market. The salary cap has exploded so much since the last CBA that comparing deals to old contracts is somewhat irrelevent. Romo is young, improving, and already among the best five-to-eight quarterbacks in the league. Quincy Carter is but a memory – the Cowboys finally have their franchise quarterback.

Thirty-one million is a ton to guarantee to a guy who has only been a starter for a season and a half, but as Rotoworld mentioned, don’t be shocked that Romo got more guaranteed money than Manning. It’s just the way the market is right now. Nate Clements, Derek Deese and Ovie Mughelli all received bloated contracts this past offseason as well. Waiting until now probably cost the Cowboys a few millions more, but at least they got more visual evidence that Romo isn’t a one year fluke.
