Cutler unimpressive in starting debut

Jay Cutler’s stat line in Denver’s 23-20 loss to the Seahawks will show a decent first outing for the rookie quarterback. Cutler threw for 143 yards and two touchdowns. The young QB also threw two interceptions (one was absolutely horrible) and most of his 143 yards came on a 71 yard Brandon Marshall touchdown reception in which Seattle’s defenders wore Vaseline on their jerseys for one play. I’ll be honest, I expected more from the rookie tonight, but hey, at least he’s not Jake Plummer.

With Josh Brown’s last second field goal in the win, the kicker has now broken the hearts of three teams this season. Denver, Detroit and St. Louis (twice) have all fallen culprit to the wrath of Brown’s right leg. Seattle wasn’t overly impressive in the win – I think the defense can still be had – but it was a win nonetheless. While everyone focuses on Chicago and Dallas in the NFC, the Seahawks might just be the sleeper of conference.

Fantasy Football: The Postgame, Week 13

Week 13 represents the final week of the regular season in many fantasy leagues, meaning that a ton of fantasy owners around the country needed big performances to land a spot in the playoffs. So who put up big numbers? I’m guessing that two of our Headliners rode the pine in a lot of leagues while three of our Flatliners broke more than a few hearts. But enough with the tease, let’s get to this week’s Headliners and Flatliners.

HEADLINERS

Trent Green (297 yards, 4 TD, 1 INT)
It’s tough to come back and play the QB position well after taking so much time off, but it looks like Green is ready for a playoff run. Fantasy owners playing against Larry Johnson are certainly grateful that they the Chiefs threw the ball so much.

Honorable Mention: Vince Young (163 pass yards, 2 TD, 2 INT, 78 rush yards), Marc Bulger (314 yards, 2 TD, 3 INT), Peyton Manning (351 yards, 1 TD, 2 INT), Eli Manning (270 yards, 2 TD)

Reggie Bush (19 touches, 168 yards, 4 TD)
Owners who drafted Bush in the third or fourth round this summer have been waiting all year for a breakout game. After rushing for one TD all season, he rushed for three and caught another against the 49ers. It’s a good thing he was on my bench in two leagues.

Honorable Mention: LaDainian Tomlinson (31 touches, 192 yards, 2 TD), Cedric Houston (25 touches, 129 yards, 2 TD), Ladell Betts (31 touches, 173 yards, 1 TD), Corey Dillon (9 touches, 25 yards, 3 TD), Marcel Shipp (7 touches, 21 yards, 3 TD), Marion Barber (12 touches, 76 yards, 2 TD)

Marvin Harrison (7 rec, 172 yards, 1 TD)
There were rumblings in Indianapolis that Harrison was none too happy about the two targets he got against the Eagles last Sunday night, but he got the lion’s share against the Titans. Even so, Reggie Wayne’s progress is cutting into Harrison’s consistency.

Honorable Mention: Matt Jones (6 rec, 128 yards, 1 TD), Mike Furrey (9 rec, 123 yards, 1 TD), Santana Moss (7 rec, 123 yards, 1 TD), Eddie Kennison (7 rec, 117 yards, 1 TD), Torry Holt (7 rec, 115 yards, 1 TD), Jericho Cotchery (9 rec, 99 yards, 1 TD)

Tony Gonzalez (9 rec, 105 yards, 2 TD)
So which guy called himself “the best tight end in the league”? Gonzo staked his claim on the title with a monster game against the Browns, but the Chiefs couldn’t get the win.

Honorable Mention: Antonio Gates (7 rec, 90 yards, 1 TD), Jeremy Shockey (6 rec, 65 yards, 1 TD), Alge Crumpler (2 rec, 62 yards, 1 TD), Chris Baker (4 rec, 50 yards, 1 TD)

FLATLINERS

Brad Johnson (73 yards, 4 INT) & Rex Grossman (34 yards, 3 INT)
The starting QBs in the Vikings/Bears matchup combined for 107 passing yards and seven interceptions. I find that stat line amazing.

Dishonorable Mention: David Carr (32 yards), Bruce Gradkowski (175 yards, 3 INT)

Joseph Addai (17 touches, 67 yards)
Talk about falling back to Earth. After a HUGE game last Sunday, Addai crashed hard and I’m sure more than a few fantasy owners were counting on getting more from the young back.

Dishonorable Mention: Frank Gore (18 touches, 68 yards), Fred Taylor (19 touches, 76 yards), Willie Parker (23 touches, 86 yards)

Andre Johnson (1 rec, 9 yards)
It’s not often that you see AJ’s name in the Flatliners section, but a one-catch/nine-yard effort hurt a lot of fantasy teams this week.

Dishonorable Mention: Joe Horn (1 rec, 18 yards), Devery Henderson (2 rec, 14 yards), Greg Jennings (2 rec, 14 yards), Laveranues Coles (3 rec, 28 yards), Randy Moss (4 rec, 44 yards), Roy Williams (3 rec, 50 yards)

Kellen Winslow (1 rec, 26 yards)
This was a pretty brutal performance from Winslow, who had been one of the most consistent TEs heading into the game. Considering how Gonzo completely outplayed him, expect Winslow to come back strong next week. At least his team got the win.

Dishonorable Mention: Chris Cooley (2 rec, 12 yards), Randy McMichael (2 rec, 14 yards)

It’s official: Florida will play OSU in national championship

The BCS deserves to be ridiculed, hammered and called out for many of the decisions regarding college football over the years. But not this time. The system worked in rewarding the Florida Gators a trip to Glendale and a shot at a national title.

Ten one thousandth of a point separated Florida and Michigan for the right to play Ohio State January 8th. While one could certainly make a driving point for a UM-OSU rematch, the Gators were the obvious choice in my opinion. Michigan had its chance to beat the No. 1 team in the country. Michigan had its shot to win its conference. Michigan had its shot to earn its way to Glendale while Florida had its shot to trip up the past two weeks while the Wolverines didn’t even play. The Gators didn’t choke ala USC and once again, they deserve to be where they are now.

Maybe someday the national championship won’t have to come down to ten one thousandth of the point though.

Other BCS Match Ups:
Rose Bowl: Michigan vs. USC
Fiesta Bowl: Boise State vs. Oklahoma
Orange Bowl: Louisville vs. Wake Forest
Sugar Bowl: Notre Dame vs. LSU

Giants continue to slide, Leftwich may be on his way out in Jacksonville

– Marion Barber is starting to make a name for himself around the league if he hasn’t already. Anyone who watches even a speck of a Dallas game can tell that Barber, not Julius Jones, is Bill Parcels go to guy late in games. With Barber’s two-touchdown performance in the Cowboys 23-20 win over the Giants, he now has six touchdowns in three weeks. For me, I’m not ready to crown Tony Romo as God of all quarterbacks yet like ESPN is. However, the guy continues to make big plays down the stretch of ballgames. Romo’s 42-yard pass to Jason Whitten with just over a minute to play essentially won the game for Dallas after the Giants tied the score at 20. I hear Tom Coughlin’s job isn’t on the line, but one has to wonder what he’s brining to the table anymore in New York. Coughlin is suppose to be the tough disciplinarian, but the Giants racked up four personal foul penalties in this game and he’s acting like a little kid on the sidelines after his team gives up big plays.

After another solid performance by David Garrard, it’s hard to imagine that Byron Leftwich will remain a Jaguar after this season. Garrard was 16 of 22 for 229 yards and two touchdowns in the Jaguars 24-10 win over the red hot Dolphins. Garrard found Matt Jones six times for 128 yards and one touchdown. And what a run by rookie Maurice Jones-Drew, who broke three tackles on a 32 yard lumber into the end zone in the fourth quarter to put the game away for the Jags. Joey Harrington is just as likely to throw a game away as he is to win one this season. Harrington threw two picks, but he seemed to have to do everything himself without Ronnie Brown in the lineup. At least he finally was introduced to Chris Chambers (eight receptions for 121 yards), who he has successful ignored for Wes Welker the past nine weeks.

Simms not out of a job yet in Tampa and Oakland still doesn’t have an offense

After watching Bruce Gradkowski throw three interceptions in the Bucs 20-3 loss to the Steelers, no one should question Tampa Bay for re-signing Chris Simms earlier this week. Gradkowski had a bit of magic when Simms first went down, but he has looked rough the past couple of games. And Tampa is getting next to nothing from Cadillac Williams this season. As for Pittsburgh, Ben Roethlisberger continues to be the difference either way in wins and losses. It seems to be simple: when Big Ben plays well, the Steelers win. When he’s terrible, not even a solid Pittsburgh defense can save a game much like Chicago does for Rex Grossman. Either way, that was a nice win for the Steelers without Hines Ward and Troy Polamalu.

– New offensive coordinator, same old Raiders. After firing Tom Walsh earlier in the week for John Shoop, Oakland still only managed 14 points in a 23-14 loss to Houston. No surprise here, Shoop was terrible in Chicago a few years ago too. However, the Hamburglar would have made a better OC than Walsh, so I won’t criticize the move too much. Check out this stat line: David Carr – 7 of 14 for 32 yards, 0 TDs, 0 INTs. And the Raiders still lost. Somebody get the Hamburglar on the line for Oakland, please.
