NFL Power Rankings: Week 7

Well, after seven weeks of NFL action, I’m totally confused – is anybody else?

Here is a look at the class and trash with nothing in between:

1. Chicago Bears (6-0)
Previous Rank: 1
We’ll see this weekend if the Bears almost-mishap in Arizona last Monday Night was a sign of bad things to come when San Francisco comes to town this Sunday…or maybe not.

2. Indianapolis Colts (6-0)
Previous Rank: 4
Okay Indy, you have my attention again. After a few weeks down in the gully of the top five, you’ve proven to me that you can stop the run. What? The Colts still can’t stop the run? Ahh well, this #2 slot has become the kiss of death anyway (i.e. San Diego last week).

3. New England Patriots (5-1)
Previous Rank: 3
Tried and true – New England just keeps plucking away. Boring as they are.

4. Denver Broncos (5-1)
Previous Rank: 4
Speaking of boring – what a boring offense, but what a playmaking defense the Broncos have. I suppose I should rank the Broncos ahead of the Patriots since they beat New England on its home turf early this season. I’ll tell you what Denver – you beat Indy at home this weekend and I’ll reserve the #2 spot for you and your terrible quarterback next week.

5. New Orleans Saints (5-1)
Previous Rank: Unranked
Much like the #2 spot, the #5 ranking has been like a revolving door. I put Seattle here last week and totally forgot about the Mega Ultimo Curse (that’s what I call the Madden Cover Jinx and NFC Champion Jinx rolled into one) that the Seahawks are battling. I’d put the Chargers here, but after the loss of Shawne Merriman and Shaun Phillips (bad weekend for anybody with the name Shawne, Shaun, Sean or Shawn) I think they’re in for some dark days. So, why not New Orleans? Who’s going to argue with America’s team ranked #5?

28. Cleveland Browns (1-5)
Previous Rank: Unranked
This group has been decimated by injuries – probably the worst in the NFL. Good news might have arrived for Browns fans though: Offensive coordinator Maurice Carthon and his totally useless brand of offense were shown the door on Tuesday.

29. Detroit Lions (1-6)
Previous Rank: 29
This is the most upbeat set of losers I’ve ever seen. Seriously, have you heard the Lions players after losses? “We’re right there.” “We’re building something good here.” “We believe in what the coaching staff is trying to accomplish.” At 1-6, good for them, no joke…

30. Arizona Cardinals (1-6)
Previous Rank: 28
Dennis Green is going to personally run this decent group of talent right into hell – I’m completely sold on it.

31. Miami Dolphins (1-5)
Previous Rank: 30
What’s left to say about this Mega Ultimo Bust (that’s what I call a team that many had making the playoffs and are now 1-5 with its only win coming against the Texans)?

32. Oakland Raiders (1-5)
Previous Rank: 32
Here’s the scary thing: the Raiders lost somewhat close games to the Browns, 49ers and Broncos before notching their first win over Arizona. The 4-2 Oakland Raiders? Unthinkable…

College Football Power Rankings

With the new AP and USA Today Top 25 polls posting over the weekend, it’s time to take a look at the top 10 in college football.

Once again, the two polls disagree on what program should be ranked number two. Once again, I think the USA Today folks are a bit delirious to think Michigan couldn’t beat USC on natural ground right now. Although, given the Trojans schedule this year, USC would probably face the Wolverines at home, after an off week and after Michigan played Ohio State. Seriously, have you seen how USC’s schedule is set up?

Here is how I see the Top 10:

1. Ohio State (8-0)
Anybody who has a problem with this ranking can take it up with Troy Smith, Ted Ginn Jr., Antonio Pittman and Anthony Gonzalez…they’ll be right with you after they get done scoring on your ass.

2. Michigan (8-0)
Anybody who has a problem with this ranking (USA Today) can take it up with LaMarr Woodley, Leon Hall, Prescott Burgess and Shawn Crable…they’ll be right with you after they get done stuffing you like a turkey.

3. Texas (7-1)
Whoa Long Horns, you almost made me look bad with that game against the Cornhuskers – although hey, good teams find ways to win in the end. Nice individual effort by safety Aaron Ross in causing the turnover that allowed QB Colt McCoy (stud) and K Ryan Bailey to win the game for UT.

4. USC (6-0)
Oh, hey Trojans. Almost didn’t recognize you after the second off week you had this season. I don’t mean to hammer USC, because they do have a solid team. But after a couple of mini wins over inferior programs, I just don’t see the Trojans stacking up against the three previous ranked teams. And I wouldn’t be totally surprised if West Virginia knocked off USC either.

5. West Virginia (7-0)
I hear that sophomore QB Pat White is eligible for the NFL draft next April and is thinking about coming out early. Stay in school young man and polish your game. Unless you have enjoyed what NFL defenses have done with fellow quarterback’s Trent Green, Matt Hasselback and Ben Roethlisberger this season.

6. Auburn (7-1)
Nice game by RB Ben Tate and QB Brandon Cox over Tulane this weekend. It’s looking more and more every week that the Tigers just had a bad week against Arkansas a few weeks ago and deserves another shot. That, and the Razorbacks are still kicking ass and taking names, so it proves that ArKANSAS was no fluke.

7. Florida (6-1)
The Gators needed an off week didn’t they? This weekend “Cocktail Party” should be less daunting against a struggling Georgia program. But then again, I’m sure Urban Meyer’s bunch isn’t overlooking the Bull Dogs in the least.

8. Tennessee (6-1)
I’m telling you, Alabama is a tough program. The Tide gave everything they had against the Vols last Saturday and almost pulled off a nice upset. Erik Ainge (three interceptions) is allowed to have one bad day, isn’t he?

9. Louisville (7-0)
The big game between Louisville and West Virginia is finally on the horizon folks. One team will be considered legit, while the other will likely get bounced out of the top 10 due to its powder cake schedule. Is it just me, or do the Mountaineers seem far and away the better team? Something tells me that that game is going to be a dud.

10. Clemson (7-1)
I love it. I’ve been on the Tigers bandwagon ever since they rocked Bobby Bowden’s bunch way back in September. Clemson and its sacred rock deserve to be ranked higher than Notre Dame – I’m sorry. The Irish did have a nice moment in the last second 45 yard TD from Brady Quinn to Jeff Samardzija on Saturday, but the Tigers just have something special going this season.

College Football Players of the Week

Here are your college football players of the week. Remember, if you feel that another player was worthy of higher honors than the two I chose, post the athlete and let me hear why you think he or they were more deserving.

Remember though, the two athletes I pick are usually going to be on a team that played somebody other than the nerds from the Revenge of the Nerds movie.

That’s just how I roll – here are your top performers of the week:

Offensive Player of the Week:James Davis, RB Clemson
Stat wise, there were actually better performers than Davis (like Boise State RB Ian Johnson, who rushed for 283 yards and four TDs). However, teamed up with fellow back C.J. Spiller, Davis (216 yards and two scores) and the Tigers were able to trump then-13th-ranked Georgia Tech 31-7 in the big ACC showdown on Saturday. The win lifted Clemson into the top 10 in the AP poll and that my friends, is why Davis earns the OPOTW honors.

Defensive Player of the Week: Ameer Ismail, LB Western Michigan
Because of the school, Ismail probably didn’t stick out to college football fans over the weekend. However, Ismail stuck out like a sore thumb in the minds of Ball State. The linebacker had six sacks, which tied an NCAA single-game record, in the Broncos 41-27 win over the Cardinals. Ismail also took an interception back for a touchdown and added 13 total tackles. In short, the guy was the Broncos defense.

Fantasy Football: Waiver Wire Watch, Week 8

QUARTERBACKS

Here is a list of players that may be available on your league’s waiver wire, in order of relative value:

Jon Kitna, Chad Pennington, Alex Smith, Rex Grossman, David Carr, Phillip Rivers, Matt Leinart, Charlie Frye, Tony Romo, Damon Huard, Brad Johnson, Seneca Wallace, Mark Brunell. J.P. Losman, Bruce Gradkowski, Vince Young, Joey Harrington, Kyle Boller

Tony Romo started the second half of the Monday night game and threw for 227 yards, 2 TD and 3 INT. It wasn’t all pretty, and there’s no guarantee that Bill Parcells is going to stick with him, but it’s worth noting. Dallas has a great group of receivers and if Romo can take care of the ball, he’ll be the guy down the stretch…Charlie Batch played well in Ben Roethlisberger’s absence and is an obvious choice if Big Ben misses any time…Seneca Wallace will replace Matt Hasselbeck, who is out for three weeks (according to Mike Holmgren). Wallace had a tough time on Sunday, but should fare better with a week’s worth of reps under his belt.

RUNNING BACKS

Travis Henry, Leon Washington, Wali Lundy, Maurice Jones-Drew, Justin Fargas, Cedric Benson, Maurice Morris, Jerious Norwood, Michael Turner, Brandon Jacobs, Najeh Davenport

Leon Washington was the main main for the Jets on Sunday, rushing 20 times for 129 yards and two TD. Kevan Barlow is still in the picture (12 carries), but Washington seems to be grabbing the reins…LaMont Jordan missed the game Sunday and is listed as questionable for next week (he wants to “play it safe” with his bad back), so Justin Fargas immediately becomes a decent spot starter. He has good speed but has been injury prone…Don’t look now but Wali Lundy is back in the saddle for the Texans. Samkon Gado started the game but his line (10 carries, 27 yards) doesn’t compare to Lundy’s final line (19 carries, 93 yards, 1 TD, 4 catches, 15 yards). Has Lundy done enough to win the job? Only head coach Gary Kubiak knows for sure.

WIDE RECEIVERS

Marques Colston, Reggie Williams, Mark Clayton, Bernard Berrian, Jerricho Cotchery, Mike Furrey, Marty Booker, Doug Gabriel, Wes Welker, Bryant Johnson, Marcus Robinson, Eric Parker

Marty Booker may have been cut after missing some time with an injured shoulder, but he caught seven passes for 110 yards and a TD against the Packers, sending many Chris Chambers owners to the loony bin in the process…If Troy Williamson or Travis Taylor miss any games, Marcus Robinson’s value would increase. He caught four passes for 77 yards and a score against the Seahawks.

TIGHT ENDS

Chris Cooley, Desmond Clark, Alex Smith, Owen Daniels, Eric Johnson, Jerramy Stevens, Courtney Anderson

Although he has the name of a pretty little pop star, Courtney Anderson also has some game. He caught three passes for 55 yards in the win over the Cardinals, and is benefiting from more looks this season…Owen Daniels continues to produce at a nice clip for a rookie. He caught two passes for 20 yards and a score, his fourth of the year.
