Oklahoma star running back and Heisman Trophy hopeful, Adrian Peterson, broke his collarbone in the Sooners 34-9 victory over Iowa State on Saturday.

Peterson, who will miss the rest of the season, broke his collarbone while diving into the end zone.

“Just diving into the end zone and when he landed, he landed wrong,” Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said. “At this point it looks like the best thing, the earliest he would be ready to play, would be a bowl game.”

“My goals when I got here were to win a national championship first and then have an opportunity to win the Heisman,” Peterson told The Oklahoman in September. “Those are the things I want to do, but the only thing right now I know for a fact that would keep me [at Oklahoma] next year is a major injury. God willing, that won’t happen.”

What a sad setback for a guy who had aspirations of entering the NFL draft at the end of the season. Maybe Peterson will choose to stay in school another year though, and that’s never a bad thing. Hopefully the young man will take this injury for what it’s worth, finish his education and come back for his senior year and give Oklahoma another great season.

Peterson is currently the fourth-leading rusher in Oklahoma history.
