T.O. out for the entire preseason?

The Cowboys say no, but apparently ESPNews reported earlier today that a lingering hamstring problem would keep Terrell Owens out of action for the entire preseason. The fact that ESPN.com hasn’t run the story makes it quite possible that they’ve since backed off their statement, but with news that Owens definitely will miss the Cowboys’ preseason opener Saturday with his sore hammy, this pseudo-news certainly bears watching.

Warning bells should be sounding for fantasy owners (and, of course, Dallas fans) right now, considering T.O. is 32, so any signs of his body breaking down are alarming to say the least. Aside from that, though, if T.O. doesn’t get his reps with Drew Bledsoe in this summer, the two could be out of synch once the season begins. Not a good start to T.O.’s comeback season.

NFL News and Notes 8/7

Here are some of the recent headlines from the NFL:

Denver Broncos

Mike Shannon has named Bell as his starting running back entering the Broncos first preseason game against the Detroit Lions on Friday.

Although a Bell was figured to be named starter, not many people thought it would be Mike Bell, an undrafted rookie free agent from Arizona. The young man has surpassed Tatum Bell (no relation) and Ron Dayne on Denver’s depth chart with his work ethic and physical style of running.

Mike Bell, however, has turned heads with his toughness. Bell rushed for 3,163 yards and 17 touchdowns at Arizona, but as recently as last week said he was just hoping to land a job.

Rookie quarterback Jay Cutler from Vanderbilt is moving up the depth chart in Denver. Cutler is now the No. 2 ranked quarterback on the Broncos’ depth chart.

Buffalo Bills

Also making headlines early this week is that the Buffalo Bills released three-year starter Jeff Posey on Monday.

Posey became expendable after losing his starting position to Angelo Crowell in team minicamps early this offseason. Crowell played so effectively in place of the injured Takeo Spikes last season that the Bills kept him in the starters roll following the ’05 season.

Posey will catch on somewhere, however, as his veteran leadership will be wanted in some NFL city. He recorded his best season in 2003 while registering 64 tackles, 5 ½ sacks and four forced fumbles for Buffalo.

Pittsburgh Steelers

In the stupidity section of NFL headlines comes Pittsburgh Steelers’ offensive lineman Barrett Brooks, who allegedly fled from police on his motorcycle over the weekend.

The 34-year-old backup lineman for the Super Bowl champions was charged with fleeing and eluding, reckless driving, driving at an unsafe speed and other traffic violations Sunday. He was taken to Allegheny County Jail, according to Pittsburgh police Sgt. Dennis Washington.

Police said Brooks drove recklessly around a police car and didn’t stop, causing officers to chase him for about five minutes. Brooks also drove through a red traffic light and a stop sign, Washington said.
Brooks wasn’t intoxicated, but wasn’t wearing a helmet while on his motorcycle, police said.

Let me get this straight, Brooks wasn’t wearing a helmet? In the aftermath of the Ben Roethlisberger situation just a few short months ago, how can you be so utterly dumb? And to say that you weren’t fleeing is just as stupid. What were you doing than Brooks, pretending to be the invisible man for a new comic book movie?

Dallas Cowboys

On the injury front, the Dallas Cowboys have been without their two marquee names at wide receiver. Terrell Owens has been sidelined since last Wednesday when he tweaked his hamstring.

Terry Glenn also sat out practice Monday with blisters affecting his toes and feet. The Cowboys also announced today that they are working out former Eagles’ wide receiver Freddy Mitchell in camp this week.

Minnesota Vikings

Minnesota lost starting strong safety Tank Williams for the season. The free agent from the Titans fractured his knee while performing a back pedaling drill Vikings camp during last Saturday’s practice.

It marks the second time that Williams, 26, has sustained a serious injury to his left knee. In 2004, he tore the anterior cruciate ligament after starting the first nine contests and missed the balance of the season. He returned in 2005, started all 16 games, and registered career highs in solo tackles (65) and total tackles (83).

Dwight Smith, just signed after New Orleans’ released him just recently, will be the starter alongside of Pro Bowl free safety Darren Sharper.

’06 NFL HOF class the best ever?

After a weekend full of Hall of Fame coverage on ESPN, John Clayton of ESPN.com wrote that the 2006 class is the best that the NFL has ever inducted.

Joining the NFL Hall of Fame in elite in Canton, Ohio this year were quarterbacks Troy Aikman and Warren Moon., linebacker Harry Carson, tackle Rayfield Wright, coach, commenter and video game professor John Madden and the late great Reggie White.

In my opinion, this has to go down as the one of the greatest classes in history because it comes from the greatest group of 15 ever put before the board. Former Bills running back Thurman Thomas might have made it as a first-ballot Hall of Famer had it not been for the selection of two senior candidates — Madden and Wright.

The list of players who didn’t make it is almost as impressive as the list of those who did. Look at the backlog at defensive end with both L.C. Greenwood and Claude Humphrey failing to get in. Former Chiefs great Derrick Thomas was one of the best pass-rushers in the history of the game. He didn’t make it. Neither did former Vikings and Broncos left tackle Gary Zimmerman.

I would have to agree with Clayton in saying this was a magical class. Although Aikman was surrounded by some of the best talent in his three-time Super Bowl days, as Clayton noted, he was hammered earlier in his career and survived to become one of the greatest QBs ever to play the game.

Watching Moon fire passes to his receivers was a thing of beauty. He never got one of his teams to a Conference Championship game, but his numbers alone merits his first ballot entry. Moon is the first African-American quarterback to be enshrined into the Hall of Fame.

Madden is one of the most recognizable names in NFL history, because of his coaching history, his presence in the booth and even to a younger crowd who purchase his yearly video game. He won a Super Bowl in 1977 and had an amazing regular season record of 103-32-7.

Carson had to wait seven agonizing years before his name was finally called, but was one of the greatest leaders for the Giants and led the team in tackles for five seasons. He also earned All-Rookie honors in 1977 and was selected to nine Pro Bowls.

Wright played as a tight end, defensive end and offensive tackle during his 12-year career and played in five Super Bowls. He was selected to six Pro Bowls and was a Seniors Committee nominee.

Finally, Reggie White will be remembered as one of the most dominating defensive ends to every play the game. In several interviews that appeared on ESPN and the NFL network all weekend, White seemed to be one of the greatest guys off the field as well.

White was picked to be an All-Pro 13 out of 15 seasons, includling 10 as a first-team selection. Unfortunatly, White passed away Dec. 26, 2004 at the age of 43.

This group will be challenged every year as one of the best classes ever to be enshrined in Canton.

Coaches rank Ohio State #1, Texas #2 in preseason poll

Coming off a dominating win over Notre Dame last season in the Fiesta Bowl, the Ohio State Buckeyes are ranked #1 in the coaches preseason poll. Defending national champions Texas is ranked #2, followed by USC and Notre Dame tied for the #3 spot.

Ohio State has to overhaul its defense with the graduation of several stars, including the entire starting linebacking trio of A.J. Hawk, Bobby Carpenter and Anthony Schlegel. But the Buckeyes have talented players waiting in the wings, and they return nearly all of their key players on offense, including quarterback Troy Smith and wide receiver and return specialist Ted Ginn Jr., both Heisman Trophy candidates.

Defending national champion Texas (13-0) is second after receiving 11 first-place votes and 1,378 points. But the Longhorns, who won a championship for the ages with a 41-38 triumph over Southern California in the Rose Bowl, have to replace all-everything quarterback Vince Young, who left after his junior season and was drafted third by the Tennessee Titans.

This sets up another huge matchup between the Buckeyes and the Longhorns, this time in Austin on September 9th. Both schools deserve huge credit for scheduling games in back-to-back seasons.
