Sam Farmer of the LA Times writes on his Twitter page that the possibility of free agent quarterback Michael Vick signing with the Jaguars “is looking more and more real.”

While I question how a writer from the LA Times would know that Vick could sign with the Jaguars (it wouldn’t be too far-fetched to think Farmer has a contact in Jax, I guess) Jacksonville does make sense as a possible landing spot for the criminal. (Too harsh? No? Okay.)

There were rumors around draft time that the Jags would take a quarterback with the No. 8 pick in the first round, but instead decided to upgrade their offensive line when Eugene Monroe fell to them at that spot. Some pundits believe that David Garrard’s time is running out in Jacksonville, although he was hardly to blame for the injuries that ransacked the offensive line last year and completely hindered the Jags’ offensive success.

Still, a little competition never hurt anybody and Garrard’s backup is 37-year-old journeyman Todd Bouman, so maybe Vick is a great fit for the Jags. (Although it should be noted that Jacksonville’s beat writer Michael C. Wright reports that Vick’s name hasn’t come up once during meetings between him and team brass.)

In other Vick news, the Redskins, Seahawks, Bengals, Bills, 49ers and Rams have already stated that they’re not interested in the free agent QB.

According to a report by ESPN.com, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has decided to suspend Michael Vick for four games of the 2009 season, but said the free agent quarterback is free to sign with any team and can attend training camp. ESPN states that Goodell is expected to wait until early next week before officially announcing the decision.

So much for some folks thinking that Vick was going to be suspended for eight or even 16 full games this season. Everyone has the right to have their own opinion on whether or not Goodell let Vick off easy, but don’t forget that the former Falcon has already spent 23 months in jail, which is something Pacman Jones, Chris Henry, Tank Johnson never did before serving their suspensions from the commissioner.

Now the waiting game for Vick begins. Which team will ultimately decide to sign Vick and all of his baggage? Will he even be signed? To some, it’s already a foregone conclusion that some team will take a flier on him, but don’t forget that with signing Vick, a team also opens the door to immense criticism from their fan base, not too mention the media attention that inevitable circus that will follow him once he’s signed.

Personally, I still like the Raiders, Seahawks or 49ers as his possible landing spots. The Raiders because Al Davis is clinically insane (he has to be right?) and could care less about what people think. The Seahawks because new head coach Jim Mora personally held Vick’s jock strap for him on the sidelines when he was in Atlanta. And the 49ers because if there’s one person that could truly help Vick turn his life around, I think it’s Mike Singletary. (Oh, and because Shaun Hill is expected to start at quarterback for San Fran…not that he’s not good…eeeh.)

Even though he’d like to evaluate Alex Smith more, 49ers’ head coach Mike Singletary isn’t ruling out the possibility of Michael Vick playing in San Francisco some day.

“I’m not going to say I’m open or closed,” Singletary said of the possibility of the 49ers acquiring Vick.

“I’d say it has to be something Scot (McCloughan) and I talk about and feel good about one way or the other. But we have not talked about it at this point in great detail. We’re trying to focus on what we have.

“I think right now we really need to look at the two guys we have,” Singletary added. “If everything works out with Alex and he’s back, we need to look at that and go as far as we can go with that. The whole Michael Vick thing, we have to sit down and talk about that. But for right now, we have enough on our plates.”

When asked about the team’s possibly going after Vick, team president Jed York said, “That’s up to Scot and Mike.”

He added that the possibility is probably remote.

“We’d talk about it,” York said. “If they felt it was right for the team, and convince me and my parents . . . it’s up to them to show that somebody who’s had issues in the past can be a part of this team. But that’s not something we’ve discussed, and I doubt that would happen.”

Vick could learn a lot about discipline from Singletary and maybe under the head coach’s guidance, could start to turn his life around. This is still a big “if”, but if Vick winds up in San Francisco, it’d be nice to know he’d have Singletary serving as a mentor.

With the 49ers set to interview former Falcons’ head coach Dan Reeves and former Atlanta offensive coordinator Hue Jackson, internet speculation revved up the possibility of San Fran reaching out to suspended quarterback Michael Vick once he gets out of federal prison.

But Matt Maiocco’s of the Press Democrat.com mocks the idea in his latest blog entry:

Put all that together and it seems obvious to me that the 49ers have decided to acquire Vick when/if he is able to resume his career after serving his sentence, as well as any suspension Roger Goodell might impose.

But that is not all I’ve learned in recent days:

–The 49ers’ plan to go after Vick was actually Plan B. The first idea was to acquire Daunte Culpepper and Randy Moss, and build a dome to replace Candlestick.

This would’ve been the plan if Scott Linehan had just said yes to the 49ers’ offer to become offensive coordinator. Linehan was coordinator of a top-4 ranked Vikings offense for three consecutive seasons with Culpepper and Moss as his main weapons under the roof of the Metrodome. But when Linehan declined the 49ers’ offer, the 49ers had no other choice but to rip apart that plan and begin their planning to get Vick.

–The 49ers will do whatever’s necessary to select Ole Miss offensive lineman Michael Oher in the draft.

Oher’s first year in college was 2005. That is the same season that Micheal Spurlock concluded his Ole Miss career. The 49ers signed Spurlock to a contract this week. Hel-LOOOO! I mean, can you even conceive a scenario in which the 49ers would sign Spurlock if it wasn’t already a done deal that they’d soon be getting Oher? All you have to do is connect the dots on this one. Oh, yeah, and Patrick Willis is already on the team. This one is just way too easy.

–The 49ers plan to lure Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Montana out of retirement.

Coach Mike Singletary hired Tom Rathman to join his staff as running backs coach. Singletary is being just a little too obvious about his intentions. Obviously, the best way to get Montana out of retirement is to hire a former teammate to the staff. You read it here first.

Singletary has not announced Shaun Hill will be the starter in 2009 for one very good reason. How can Hill be the starter with Montana on the team?

Even though Maiocco has every right to mock the notion, the idea isn’t that far fetched. After all, Reeves did draft Vick in 2001 and the thought of Dan and Singletary teaming up to straighten Mikey out isn’t that bad of an idea.

But if you remember correctly, Reeves and Vick didn’t necessarily end on the best of terms. They had a great working relationship up until midseason of 2003 when Reeves questioned whether or not Vick was being overly cautious with the fractured fibula he suffered in a preseason game that year. Reeves, presumably worried about losing his job, wanted Vick to play a hell of a lot sooner than Week 13, which was the first time Mike returned to the field after suffering the injury. But Vick kept proclaiming he wouldn’t be 100% if he had come back any sooner than that, so why force it? Reeves was eventually fired a week and a half later and we all know what happened to Vick.

Not that the two couldn’t put that little squabble behind them (if they haven’t already) to work together again, but that’s just another thing to keep in mind if you want to buy the Vick-to-San Francisco rumors that have been circulating. Personally, I don’t think Singletary would take a shot on Vick. He wants players that will be dedicated on the field – not to their twisted hobbies off it.
