Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen expects to be ready to work out for his pro day on April 9 after having surgery to repair a toe injury. This goes against what the NFL Network’s Charley Casserly reported yesterday when he said that Clausen is unlikely to get a full workout in before April’s draft.

From the Chicago Tribune:

“I went through (the medical) process yesterday,” Clausen said. “It took quite a bit of time. They said it looks really good and it’s healing. They told me to take my time and not push it too much.

“That is what I am shooting for (to do everything at his pro day) and that is what the doctor told me.”

Clausen says he injured the toe against Michigan State on September 19 and played the rest of the season taking painkillers.

It’s interesting that three of the top quarterback prospects in this year’s draft – Clausen, Sam Bradford and Colt McCoy – are all dealing with injury concerns. While teams will definitely want to see him throw, Clausen is in good shape because his injury is foot-related and not arm-related like Bradford and McCoy’s. Clausen should be fine by OTAs.

According to a report by ESPN.com, Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen was punched in the face by an irate fan outside a South Bend resturant early Sunday morning.

The report states that Clausen has a swollen eye from the incident, although he’s still expected to play this weekend against Stanford.

That person said Clausen was “sucker-punched” by a fan as he left an establishment after having dinner with his parents.
The fan allegedly said something to Clausen and/or a female acquaintance.

A South Bend police spokesman said that no police reports were filed over the weekend involving Clausen, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The newspaper also reported that the name of the bar was CJ’s and that a bartender at the establishment said that Clausen had been there with family members and other Irish upperclassmen after Notre Dame’s loss to Connecticut on Senior Day.

If you’re an Irish fan, why punch Clausen? Out of all the players and coaches that have under performed on that team this season, Clausen would be the last guy you would punch, right? (I’m being factious by the way – fans shouldn’t be touching any player or coach no matter how much Charlie Weis screws the pooch.)

Either way, things are definitely getting a little testy in South Bend these days.

Following Notre Dame’s 20-16 win over Boston College on Saturday, Jimmy Clausen went to shake the hand of Eagle player Rich Gunnell, who appeared to have a few choice words for the Irish quarterback.

So Clausen said, “Hey Rich, let’s be cool here. We both tried really hard today and sportsmanship is my life. I think the world of you and I appreciate your friendship.”

Okay, so Clausen didn’t say any of that. He actually pushed Gunnell and the whole incident was caught on television. (Thanks to SPORTSbyBROOKS.com for the video tip.)

Now, who knows what Gunnell said and who knows what the players said to each other during the game. Obviously the moment isn’t good for Clausen, but these aren’t choirboys here. A push seems kind of mild in the grand scheme of things.

The bigger story is how Notre Dame continues to struggle against Boston College. The Irish’s victory was ugly at best.
