Waiver Wire Watch: Week 16
Posted by John Paulsen (12/16/2008 @ 10:47 am)
Just about every fantasy league is in its final week of the playoffs, so I’m going to do a quick rundown of the guys available at each position. To qualify, players have to be available on the waiver wire of at least 50% of ESPN’s leagues. I’ll rank them in the order I’d pick them up in a league with a high-performance, PPR scoring system. And I’ll focus mainly on the player’s Week 16 matchup.
QUARTERBACKS
Shaun Hill (43.1)
Dan Orlovsky (2.9)
Mark Bulger (40.0)
JaMarcus Russell (23.5)
Ryan Fitzpatrick (6.1)
Seneca Wallace (6.1)
Tarvaris Jackson (5.4)
J.P. Losman (4.4)
Ken Dorsey (0.9)

Waiver Wire Watch: Week 15
Posted by John Paulsen (12/09/2008 @ 11:19 am)
Every week, I highlight a few players that you should target in waivers. I use the ESPN league data when filtering players, so the only players eligible for discussion here are those that are available on the waiver wire of at least 50% of ESPN’s leagues. I’ll list each player’s percentage-owned after their name so you have an idea of how available they are in leagues around the country. I’ll always try to mention a few players that are available in 90% of leagues for those of you in 12-team leagues or leagues with big rosters. I’ll rank them in the order I’d pick them up in a league with a high-performance, PPR scoring system.
Please note that these rankings are for total value through the end of the year. Players with particularly good matchups this week are in bold.
QUARTERBACKS
Shaun Hill (35.7)
Kerry Collins (44.4)
Seneca Wallace (2.6)
Tarvaris Jackson (3.0)
Marc Bulger (40.4)
J.T. O’Sullivan (11.9)
Ryan Fitzpatrick (6.5)

QUARTERBACKS
I’d pick up Tyler Thigpen, Trent Edwards and Jeff Garcia ahead of Collins this week and Matt Hasselbeck after him, before moving on to the rest of the list:
Kerry Collins (36.5)
Over the last three weeks, Collins has averaged 254 passing yards and 2.0 TD per game.
Shaun Hill (25.3)
Hill has thrown for at least two TD in each of the last three games.
Gus Frerotte (30.7)
He has nice matchups in Week 14 and Week 15, which makes him a good QB2 for the playoffs.
Sage Rosenfels (24.0)
Joe Flacco (43.1)
Ryan Fitzpatrick (6.6)
JaMarcus Russell (24.1)

QUARTERBACKS
I’d pick up Matt Cassel and Tyler Thigpen before moving onto the list below. Jeff Garcia and Brady Quinn also have nice matchups this week. I’d probably pick them up after Frerotte.
Gus Frerotte (32.3)
He has a great schedule down the stretch that includes JAX, DET and ARI.
Matt Hasselbeck (47.8)
He was rough in his first week back, but he has as much upside as anyone on this list.
Kerry Collins (22.1)
519 yards and five TD over the last two weeks is nothing to sneeze at. Plus, he has four pretty good matchups in the next four weeks – NYJ, DET, CLE and HOU. You wouldn’t want to start him Week 16 however (PIT).
Shaun Hill (21.8)
He’s averaging 215 yards and 2.0 pass TD over the last two games, plus he had a rush TD to boot. He has a nice stretch run in Weeks 14-16 against the Jets, Dolphins and Rams.
Joe Flacco (42.8)
Sage Rosenfels (30.6)
JaMarcus Russell (25.8)
Ryan Fitzpatrick (6.8)
Daunte Culpepper (12.4)
I have no idea why Detroit isn’t looking at Drew Stanton right now, but Culpepper is a starting QB, so he does have some value.

I’ll rank them in the order I’d pick them up in a league with a high-performance, PPR scoring system.
Please note that these rankings are for total value through the end of the year. Players with particularly good matchups this week are in bold.
QUARTERBACKS
Gus Frerotte (35.0)
Joe Flacco (34.5)
Six pass TD and one rush TD over the last four games.
Tyler Thigpen (16.0)
237 yards and 2.0 pass TD over the last three games is nothing to sneeze at.
Brady Quinn (41.4)
He looked sharp in his debut, but don’t get too excited – it was against a very bad Denver defense.
Shaun Hill (15.5)
He threw two TD against the Cards, and has a tasty matchup with the Rams next week.
Sage Rosenfels (30.0)
Kerry Collins (20.6)
Ryan Fitzpatrick (7.1)
Seneca Wallace (5.6)
Daunte Culpepper (11.1)
RUNNING BACKS
If Kevin Smith (71.3) is available, I’d grab him before Benson. If Mewelde Moore (73.0), Sammy Morris (71.5) or Justin Fargas (67.3) is available, I’d grab them first before moving on to the rest of this list:
Cedric Benson (45.1)
BenJarvus Green-Ellis (39.0)
It looks like he’s “the man” until Sammy Morris and/or LaMont Jordan get back.
Ricky Williams (47.5)
Peyton Hillis (2.8)
If Selvin Young can’t go, he’ll get most of the work in Denver.
Shaun Alexander (13.4)
He might get some work this week if Portis misses.
Selvin Young (39.5)
If he could just get healthy he’d be RB1 for the Broncos.
Antonio Pittman (7.1)
He could get the start again if Steven Jackson misses Week 11.
Pierre Thomas (23.7)
LaMont Jordan (6.7)
He needs to beat Sammy Morris back to get some work.
Carnell Williams (6.3)
It looks like he’s going to return to action soon.
WIDE RECEIVERS
Greg Camarillo (49.4)
Michael Jenkins (14.5)
Justin Gage (13.2)
Mark Bradley (2.4)
He has posted 18-188-2 over the last three weeks and looks to be a legitimate option alongside Dwayne Bowe and Tony Gonzalez. The fact that Tyler Thigpen is playing well sure helps.
Malcom Floyd (5.0)
He’s thriving while Chris Chambers is hobbled – to the tune of three TD in the last four games.
Josh Morgan (8.1)
Bobby Engram (30.3)
Should have value down the stretch in PPR leagues, especially if Matt Hasselbeck can make it back.
Koren Robinson (1.3)
9-143-2 over the last two games isn’t bad.
Antwaan Randle El (47.1)
Joey Galloway (44.0)
Amani Toomer (35.0)
Donte Stallworth (24.7)
Ike Hilliard (22.0)
Steve Smith (18.3)
Mark Clayton (7.1)
Could get a few more targets next week if Derrick Mason misses action.
Shaun McDonald (4.0)
Posting decent numbers in PPR leagues.
TIGHT ENDS
I would grab Bo Scaife (81.8), Tony Scheffler (68.8), Greg Olsen (79.9), and Jeremy Shockey (81.7) and then move on to…
Kevin Boss (42.0)
After a slow start, Boss has posted 13-133-3 over the last three games. He looks like a solid starter over the stretch run.
Dustin Keller (18.4)
He had a huge day against the Rams (6-107-1) but he’s too inconsistent to be trusted as more than a spot starter.
Next, I’d grab Zach Miller (59.4), Visanthe Shiancoe (64.0) and John Carlson (50.4)
Todd Heap (37.1)
Finally! But does 5-58-2 against the Texans mean that the old Todd Heap is back? Color me skeptical.
Billy Miller (22.9)
Jeremy Shockey turned his ankle, and if he misses more time, Miller will be a solid starter.
Marcedes Lewis (28.8)
L.J. Smith (23.8)
Desmond Clark (10.2)
Robert Royal (12.2)
Alex Smith (19.8)

QUARTERBACKS
Gus Frerotte (29.9)
Frerotte has been a fringe fantasy starter since he took over in Minny. Three touchdowns against the Texans doesn’t hurt.
Sage Rosenfels (1.3)
In eight games where he attemped 20+ passes, he averaged 220 yards and 1.9 TD. He’s a borderline starter as long as Schaub is out.
Brady Quinn (9.9)
It’s official. He’s taking over for Derek Anderson. He’s worth a pickup for teams in need of QB help.
Joe Flacco (20.3)
Ryan Fitzpatrick (8.2)
Tyler Thigpen (5.4)
Byron Leftwich (0.4)
With Ben Roethlisberger sidelined, Leftwitch could be in for a few nice games.
Shaun Hill (6.1)
For desperate owners, it’s worth rolling the dice on a QB in Mike Martz’s system.
Kerry Collins (21.6)
JaMarcus Russell (36.3)
Seneca Wallace (4.8)
Brooks Bollinger (0.4)

QUARTERBACKS
The following guys are owned in more than 50% of leagues, and I’d pick them up in this order before moving onto the rest of the list: Matt Ryan, Matt Cassel and Chad Pennington. I’d pick up Jeff Garcia after Marc Bulger.
Gus Frerotte (29.4)
257 yards and 1.0 TD in five starts. Good matchup this week.
Marc Bulger (45.6)
Starting to show signs of life. Also has a good matchup this week.
JaMarcus Russell (37.3)
He has been decent in four of his last five starts.
Shaun Hill (0.5)
He was named the starter in San Francisco.
Kerry Collins (24.5)
Joe Flacco (16.8)
Tyler Thigpen (1.4)
Looked pretty good against the Jets.
Dan Orlovsky (8.6)
Ryan Fitzpatrick (7.6)
Brad Johnson (34.3)

QUARTERBACKS
I’d grab Trent Edwards, J.T. O’Sullivan, Matt Ryan, Chad Pennington and Matt Cassel first (in that order) – they’re all owned in more than 50% of leagues – and then move onto this list:
Gus Frerotte (32.3)
Since he took over as the starter, Frerotte is averaging 257 yards and 1.0 TD per game. He throws a few picks, but he’s a capable fantasy backup.
Marc Bulger (44.7)
We’re still holding out hope that Bulger could return to his glory days, but that seems to be a real longshot at this point. Still, things are looking up now that Scott Linehan is gone.
Jeff Garcia (41.8)
He isn’t flashy, and he probably isn’t going to have too many multiple-TD games, but he should be good for around 200 yards and a score each week, and that’s not bad for a backup.
JaMarcus Russell (40.9)
He posted 203 yards and a TD against a so-so Jets pass defense.
Brad Johnson (41.6)
His uninspired play against the Rams will have Cowboys management rushing Romo back asap.
Brady Quinn (13.4)
Doesn’t it feel like it’s almost the start of the Brady Quinn era in Cleveland?
Ryan Fitzpatrick (4.3)
He could post decent numbers with some good weapons around him.
Kerry Collins ( 23.6)
Dan Orlovsky (4.6)
This we know…the Lions will throw a lot because they’ll trail a lot.
Tyler Thigpen (0.2)

QUARTERBACKS
I’d grab Trent Edwards, Matt Schaub, David Garrard and Derek Anderson first, but if they’re gone…
1. Matt Ryan (47.0)
At this point, I’d take the rookie (who is wise beyond his years) over anyone else on this list. Beware – he has a bye this week.
2. Brad Johnson (0.5)
He’ll take over for the next three games in Dallas. He’s a vet and a pro, so expect capable production with a good set of weapons to throw to.
3. Jeff Garcia (18.0)
175 passing yards and a TD every week seems about right. He has a good matchup this week.
4. JaMarcus Russell (45.4)
Erratic arm with upside. He has a nice matchup this week.
5. Marc Bulger (49.7)
Where is the Bulger of old? (Torry Holt wants to know.)
6. Chad Pennington (41.5)
7. Gus Frerotte (25.3)
8. Kerry Collins (22.1)
9. Joe Flacco (13.9)
