After their loss to the winless Kansas City Chiefs last week, the Washington Redskins stripped head coach Jim Zorn of his playcalling duties and handed them over to Sherman Lewis, who hadn’t even been with the team for a month.

The move was made in hopes to spark the Redskins’ dismal offense, but as their 27-17 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles tonight can attest to, Lewis isn’t going to change Washington’s misfortune over night.

The Redskins’ loss to the Eagles actually had very little to do with Lewis’ playcalling and more to do with Washington’s lack of execution. In the first half, quarterback Jason Campbell had a ball batted into the air by a defensive lineman and intercepted by linebacker Will Witherspoon, who returned it for a touchdown. Later in the half, Campbell escaped the pocket but didn’t get the ball out of his hands in time and was stripped from behind. The Eagles recovered and turned the gift into three points to take a 17-0 second quarter lead.

Campbell finished the night 29 of 43 passing for 284 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. For all intents and purposes, his final numbers weren’t bad (he had a QB rating of 91.6), but he often settled for check downs or underneath routes and both of his touchdown passes came around the goal line. He still struggled with hanging onto the ball too long and missing open receivers.

That said, his pass protection wasn’t that great and his receivers dropped a few passes. He also didn’t have Chris Cooley, who left the game early in the first half due to an ankle injury and never returned. All in all, it was a complete team effort by a Redskins squad that somehow generated 17 points from a brutal showing. Lewis wasn’t the problem tonight – lack of execution by the players was.

Although the game was never in doubt, the Eagles weren’t too impressive either — at least offensively. Defensively they battered Campbell the entire night, shut down Clinton Portis and flew around the football.

But offensively, McNabb and company struggled without Brian Westbrook, who left the game early in the first half after he suffered a concussion. The Eagles had major issues sustaining drives and were completely shut out in the second half when they didn’t get the same great field position generated by their defense.

Thankfully, DeSean Jackson was a showstopper. The second year player scored on a spectacular 67-yard run on the first possession of the game and then broke free in Washington’s secondary for a 57-yard touchdown reception right before half. He was the Eagles’ offense tonight.

But regardless of their offensive struggles, this was a big win for the Eagles, who desperately needed one after the Raiders embarrassed them last week in Oakland.

Last season, all the Arizona Cardinals heard about was how they couldn’t win on the road, they couldn’t play defense in crunch time and they couldn’t win a game at night when the moon was in full view and there were precisely 50,139 visible stars in the sky and not 49,349.

On Sunday night, the Cardinals went into Giants Stadium and beat New York, 24-17. It was Arizona’s third road victory of the season in as many tries and its third straight win since its 1-2 start. The Cards won largely with defense, as they forced four turnovers, including three Eli Manning interceptions.

Down 24-17 with less than five minutes remaining, the Giants had two opportunities to tie the game. But Arizona’s defense stymied them twice — once after Ahmad Bradshaw fumbled at midfield and another when Antrel Rolle intercepted Manning along the sideline to end New York’s chances.

Pundits were ready to crown the 49ers the new NFC West champs after their 3-1 start, but they look awfully overrated these days after two straight losses. Suddenly, everyone is fixing their eyes on the Cardinals again.

They still can’t run the ball and their passing attack doesn’t seem as potent as it was last year, but the Cards currently have the best run defense in the league and their running game is starting to show signs of life with rookie Beanie Wells. If they can continue to play defense the way they did last night in East Rutherford, they’ll once again become the team to beat in the NFC West. (If they haven’t already.)

It’s hard to figure out what kind of team the Giants are right now. They’ve been decimated by injuries on the defensive side of the ball and just like most teams, they can’t overcome turnovers and still eek out victories.

It might be a good idea to take a wait-and-see approach with the G-Men. It stands to reason that if this team was healthy they could have beaten the Cardinals last night, although again, they weren’t going to overcome four turnovers – not even with all of their defensive starters. And I don’t want to take anything away from the Cardinals, because they played more inspired and executed better in the second half. They deserved to win.

It stands to reason that this is a good Giants team trying to cope with injuries and make it through a rough part of their schedule the best they can. But unfortunately for them, things don’t get any easier. They play at Philadelphia next week and are home against San Diego before their bye in Week 10. After their bye, they face Atlanta t home, at Denver and then home against Dallas and Philadelphia.

They better get healthy in a hurry.

- Matt Cassel (97 yards, TD, 3 INT) looked awful. Still worth rostering, but proceed with caution.

- Alex Smith (206 yards, 3 TD, INT) came off the bench to lead the 49ers’ comeback. Showed a great rapport with Vernon Davis.

- Carson Palmer (233 yards, 5 TD) was on fire against a normally decent Bears pass defense.

- Tony Romo (311 yards, 3 TD) played very well against a pretty good Falcons defense.

- Drew Brees (298 yards, TD, 3 INT) didn’t have the sharpest passing day, but he found the endzone twice on the ground.

- Steven Jackson (23 carries, 134 yards) still hasn’t found the endzone, but he continues to rack up a ton of yards from scrimmage.

- LaDainian Tomlinson (23 carries, 71 yards) has a disappointing day against the Chiefs. He failed to score on several goal line carries.

- Steve Slaton (22 touches, 89 yards, 2 TD) starting to perform up to first round expectations.

- Frank Gore (15 touches, 47 yards) had a surprisingly quiet day against an inconsistent Texans defense.

- Ryan Grant (27 carries, 148 yards, TD) had his first big fantasy day of the season.

- Laurence Maroney (13-43-1) was pretty bad in the first half, but bounced back in the second, scoring a TD.

- Rashard Mendenhall (10 carries, 69 yards) dominatee Willie Parker (1 carry, 2 yards) in carries.

- In a semi-surprise, Adrian Peterson (22 touches, 129 yards, TD) had a big day against the Steelers. Start your studs.

- The Bills couldn’t get Marshawn Lynch (17 carries, 40 yards, TD) going on the ground, which is pretty sad considering how bad the Panthers are at stopping the run.

- Justin Fargas (11 touches, 90 yards) and Michael Bush (9 toucches, 31 yards) split the OAK backfield work with McFadden sidelined. Fargas ran hard.

- Thomas Jones (26 carries, 121 yards, TD) got the Jets off to a good start, and Shonn Greene (19 carries, 144 yards, 2 TD) took over for the injured Leon Washington (1 carry, 6 yards). With Washington out for the year, Greene looks like a great pickup for the rest of the year.

- Cedric Benson (37 carries, 189 yards, TD) absolutely shredded his old team.

- Mike Bell (12 carries, 80 yards) got more touches and was more productive than Pierre Thomas (9 touches, 44 yards). Bell looks like the better start going forward.

Be sure to check back in a few minutes for the QB position.

- Vincent Jackson (5-142-1) is pretty much a must-start in most scoring formats.

- Dwayne Bowe (2-11-1) found the endzone, but otherwise had a quiet day against a sketchy Chargers secondary.

- The 49ers have a couple of good prospects in Josh Morgan (4-62) and Michael Crabtree (5-56).

- Andre Johnson (2-62) had one big catch but left the game with a chest injury. He’s not expected to miss any time.

- Sydney Rice (11-136) is really coming into his own. Is it maturity or the fact that he now has a QB who can deliver the ball?

- David Clowney (4-79-1) was good in place of Jerricho Cotchery. Braylon Edwards (1-14) was a non-factor.

- Devin Hester (8-101-1) has had three good games in his last four, averaging 5.0-66-0.5 during that span. Starting to look like an every week start in PPR leagues.

- Chad Ochocinco (10-118-2) looks like his old self. He’s on pace for a 89-1309-11 season.

- Miles Austin (6-171-2) isn’t a one-week wonder. He has good hands and is tough to bring down. Is he the new Dallas WR1?

Be sure to check back in a few minutes for the RB and QB positions.
