- Vernon Davis (7-96-2) had a huge game, but I doubt there were too many fantasy owners that had the balls to start him.

- Tony Gonzalez (1-16) was a non-factor on Sunday.

- Brent Celek (8-104-1) is looking like an every week starter at TE. He has good hands and the Eagles need a good second receiving option after DeSean Jackson.

- Greg Olsen (5-44-1) rewarded those owners that stuck with him after a couple of shaky outings.

- I like Zach Miller (2-17), but JaMarcus Russell is so inconsistent at QB that it’s tough to start Miller in any given week.

- With the way that Indy feeds the ball to Dallas Clark (7-62-1), it wouldn’t be at all surprising if he finishes the season as fantasy’s TE1, assuming he can stay healthy.

See below for links to the QB, RB and WR positions.

- Santana Moss finally had a big game (9-172-1) and rewarded those owners with the balls (or the desperation) to stick with him after two bad outings.

- Laurent Robinson (2-26) and Donnie Avery (3-12) were very quiet against the Packers even though the Rams trailed most of the game. Robinson may be seriously hurt, per the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. If he has an MCL injury, he could be out for a while.

- There doesn’t seem to be a clear WR1 in Minnesota as Bernard Berrian, Sidney Rice and Percy Harvin each had four catches.

- With Wes Welker out, I was expecting a big PPR game for Julian Edelman (3-20), but he didn’t deliver.

- The Pats did a nice job of taking away Roddy White (4-24), which is something they’ve been doing well all season.

- There isn’t a clear WR1 for the Titans – Justin Gage and Kenny Britt each caught four passes, but Nate Washington caught Tennessee’s only pass TD.

- The Titans’ pass defense has been very suspect this season, and Jerricho Cotchery (8-108-1) took full advantage.

- Steve Smith (7-63-1) continues to be Eli Manning’s most dependable option in the passing game.

- It seems like Kelly Washington (5-66) is taking over as the Ravens’ WR2.

- Kevin Walter (7-96-1) was excellent in his return against the Jaguars.

- Mike Sims-Walker (6-81) rewarded those fantasy owners who picked him up in PPR formats. Torry Holt (3-57) seems to be taking a back seat.

- Lee Evans (4-31) had a quiet game and Terrell Owens was shut out. It was a brutal day for the Bills’ passing game.

- Nate Burleson (9-109) had a big day for the Seahawks since the Bears were probably focused on T.J. Houshmandzadeh (4-35) after a week of trash talk.

- The Steelers had a pretty decent day running the ball, so Santonio Holmes (1-18) was a non-factor. He has his best games when the Steelers can’t run.

- Louis Murphy (2-25) just doesn’t get enough consistent play out of the quarterback to be a fantasy starter.

- Brandon Marshall (5-67-1) finally had a respectable fantasy day, but Eddie Royal (1-4) did not.

- After a huge game last week, Ted Ginn was shut out. Davone Bess (7-54) was the Miami receiver to have this week.

- Vincent Jackson (5-120) is a stud and should be in fantasy lineups every week.

- Pierre Garcon (3-64-1) isn’t going to catch a ton of passes with the way Peyton Manning spreads the ball around, but he’s a big play guy who has two TD in the last two games.

- Steve Breaston (7-94) has 12 catches for 177 yards over the last two games, and is Kurt Warner’s security blanket over the middle. He is very startable in PPR leagues.

Be sure to check back later for the TE position.

- Kevin Smith (19 touches, 119 yards) had a nice game, but left early with a shoulder injury.

- Clinton Portis was dinged up heading into Sunday’s game, but was still surprisingly quiet (13 touches, 48 yards) against the Lions.

- Ryan Grant (26 carries, 99 yards) struggled early, but got it going a bit in the second half to finish with a decent ypc (3.8).

- Frank Gore left the game after only one carry, and Glen Coffee (25 carries, 54 yards) didn’t have much success against the Williams Wall. It looks like Gore will be out at least two weeks with a high ankle sprain.

- Michael Turner (15 carries, 56 yards, TD) never could get it going, but he did score.

- Fred Taylor (21 carries, 105 yards, TD) looked like his old self against the Falcons. No other Patriots RB had more than five carries.

- After a huge Week 2, Chris Johnson (22 carries, 97 yards) didn’t score, and he only caught one pass. The Jets are pretty stout defensively.

- With Brian Westbrook out, LeSean McCoy (20 carries, 84 yards, TD) had a productive game, but only caught one pass for nine yards.

- The Bucs’ rushing game never got going against a banged-up Giants defense. Derrick Ward (7 touches, 9 yards) had a miserable game after getting the start over Carnell Williams (3 touches, 11 yards).

- Willis McGahee (7 carries, 67 yards, 2 TD) and Ray Rice (15 touches, 75 yards, TD) continue to give the Ravens a formidable two-headed monster at RB.

- With Jamal Lewis out, everyone was expecting James Davis (6 touches, 11 yards) to take over as the starter, but it was Jerome Harrison (21 touches, 85 yards) who dominated the touches.

- Steve Slaton (18 touches, 113 yards) had a very productive game, but didn’t score. With Chris Brown’s fumble that cost the Texans the game, maybe Slaton will get some goal line work next game.

- My sincere apologies to anyone that benched Pierre Thomas (14 carries, 126 yards, 2 TD) on my recommendation, though it looked like the right call since he didn’t get his first touch until the third quarter. Lynell Hamilton (5 carries, 24 yards, TD) got the start, but didn’t touch the ball after halftime. Thomas looks like a good start going forward. He was strong on Sunday.

- Johnny Knox (1-7-1) caught a TD, but was only targeted three times compared to Devin Hester’s eight (5-76-1) and Earl Bennett’s five (4-80).

- Matt Forte (21 carries, 66 yards) had trouble running the ball (which is a bad sign since the Seahawks were torched last week against the 49ers, but he was a big factor in the passing game (6-40).

- Julius Jones (22 touches, 136 yards, TD) still looks like the man. Justin Forsett (2 carries, 4 yards) and Edgerrin James (4 carries, 7 yards) were non-factors.

- Cedric Benson’s day (17 touches, 81 yards, TD) is pretty impressive considering the Steelers have one of the best rush defenses in the league. He looks like a must-start most weeks.

- So much for that RBBC in Pittsburgh. Willie Parker (27 touches, 129 yards, TD) was far and away the most-used RB.

- Correll Buckhalter (14 carries, 108 yards) and Knowshon Moreno (21 carries, 90 yards, TD) repeatedly gashed the Raiders in the running game.

- I am really surprised that Ronnie Brown (21 touches, 115 yards) didn’t have an even bigger game against the Chargers lackluster rush defense.

Be sure to check back later today for the WR and TE positions.

- Aaron Rodgers got off to a shaky start, but finished with great numbers (269 pass yards, 2 pass TD, rush TD).

- Jason Campbell (327 yards, 2 TD, INT) had a predictably nice game against the Lions.

- Marc Bulger was knocked out of the game, but Kyle Boller (164 yards, 2 TD, INT) came in and played pretty well.

- Eli Manning (161 yards, 2 TD) continues to be coolly efficient in the Giants’ passing game.

- Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson combined for 115 yards passing, zero TD and four INT. Ouch.

- Drew Brees (172 yards) was surprisingly quiet against the Bills.

- Chad Pennington (54 passing yards) was knocked out of the game, and Chad Henne (92 yards, INT) didn’t do very well in his place.

DeSean Jackson, Brian Westbrook miss practice. Westy has a long history of not practicing during the week and then killing defenses on Sunday, so plan to use him in Week 3. The Eagles play in the early game, so you’ll have an opportunity to make an adjustment if he’s inactive. While tweaked ankles can clear up fast, I’m a little worried about Jackson’s groin injury. Muscle injuries don’t typically just go away, but he may be able to fight through it. One wonders if the Eagles will risk it against a Kansas City defense that hasn’t shown much in 2009.

Dwayne Bowe fighting a hamstring injury. He was a limited participant in Thursday’s practice, but the fact that he was out there is a good sign for Sunday. Again, the PHI/KC game is at 1 PM ET, so you should have time to make a move if he is a surprise scratch. He was practicing again on Friday, so that’s a good sign.

Giants lose SS Phillips for the season. This is a serious blow to a Giants DT that has looked strong thus far this season. The loss of Phillips will hurt both in the passing game and in run support, and given the team’s other injury problems on defense, don’t be afraid to start players facing the Giants this week (mainly Cadillac Williams, if healthy, and Derrick Ward).

Mike Bell out 3-4 weeks with MCL sprain? This is speculation by Saints beat writer Mike Triplett, but he has to speculate because the Saints are very tight-lipped about injuries. Expect Reggie Bush to get his normal workload and for Pierre Thomas and Lynell Hamilton to share the duties between the tackles.

Lewis misses practice; Davis to start? Don’t start Davis this week unless you absolutely have to, as he has a terrible matchup with the Ravens. Still, it would be wise to stash him if you can. The Browns face the Bengals and the Bills in the next two weeks.

Antonio Bryant participates in limited practice. Unless you’re in dire straits, don’t start Bryant until he has a nice game and follows it up with a good week of practice.

MBIII practices, status for Sunday unclear. He was limited, but the fact that he is practicing would indicate that his quad injury isn’t that severe. The Cowboys are probably going to play it safe with Barber, but a loss at home against the Giants might have thrown the franchise into panic mode. He plays in the 4 PM games on Sunday, so your options are limited. Avoid him if you can (or don’t have Felix Jones as a handcuff).

Wes Welker participates in limited practice on Thursday. A report came out earlier this week saying that Welker expects to play on Sunday, but anything can happen when it comes to the Patriots, who are notorious for keeping injuries under wraps. Welker owners should have Julian Edelman to plug in if Welker can’t go. (Note: Edelman has an ankle injury, so keep an eye his status as well).

Every week, I will highlight a few players to start and a few players to sit at each position. I’m a firm believer in starting your studs, so I won’t tell you about how Drew Brees or Adrian Peterson has a tough matchup – just go ahead and keep them in your lineup. Instead, I’ll focus on the borderline guys – players you’ll only start under the right circumstances. It’s important to note that depending on your roster and situation, you may not be able to follow these recommendations. For example, if I suggest you bench a solid starter like Tony Romo, only do so if you have a clearly better option on your bench.

The “love ‘em” players are listed in the order that I’d start them this week.

Philip Rivers has a nice matchup with the Dolphins, who have struggled to stop the pass in each of the first two games. I worry a little bit about the Chargers’ inability to stop the run and how the Dolphins could eat up the clock, but Rivers is still a must-start in most formats this week…Through two weeks, Eli Manning is QB11, and has looked pretty sharp. Steve Smith and Mario Manningham are coming on, so he has some weapons to throw to. This week, he faces a Bucs defense that is 27th against the pass, allowing 282 passing yards and 2.5 pass TD per game…Trent Edwards should have a nice game against the Saints, who are likely to put up a lot of points and aren’t terribly good against the pass…Jake Delhomme actually looks like a pretty good start this week as he faces a Cowboys defense that has given up 303 yards and 1.5 pass TD per game this season. He’s still a shaky start, but if you’re in dire straits or play in a two-QB league, he’s worth a shot…Mark Sanchez has been solid thus far and with a matchup against the 32nd-ranked Tennessee pass defense, he should have a nice day…Jason Campbell didn’t throw a TD last week against the Rams, which is worrisome, but he has another great matchup this week. The Lions have given up eight pass TD through two games.

Clinton Portis should be started this week as he plays the Lions, who have given up an average of 135 rushing yards per game this season…Ray Rice and Willis McGahee should both be in lineups this week. They face the Browns, who have the 31st-ranked rush defense (206 yards per game). The Ravens should have a field day…Assuming he can hold off Beanie Wells for another week, Tim Hightower seems like a very good start against the Colts, who have one of the worst rush defenses in the league…Knowshon Moreno saw a bigger piece of the action in Week 2, so he should have a significant role in Week 3 against a suspect Raiders rush defense.

Mario Manningham and Steve Smith are almost must-starts against a Bucs defense that was torched by the Cowboys in Week 1 and didn’t fare much better against the Bills in Week 2…Jerricho Cotchery should be in all PPR lineups this week. The Jets face the Titans, who have the league’s worst pass defense through two games…Terrell Owens and Lee Evans should be good starts this week against the Saints, who have a tendency to jump out to a big lead. The Bills may be behind and Owens and Evans should rack up some yards as Buffalo tries to come back…The Browns aren’t going to be able to run on the Ravens, so they’ll have to pass, and that means Braylon Edwards should have a good game…Santana Moss has had a miserable start to the year, but a date with the Lions could fix that. If he doesn’t have a big game this week, he should probably ride the bench until he wakes up…Kevin Walter (if he plays) could be a good start against the Jags, who are 26th in the league against the pass. If he can’t go Andre Davis or Jacoby Jones (whoever starts opposite Andre Johnson) would be a sneaky good start.

It doesn’t seem like a bad matchup for Brett Favre, but the 49ers have only allowed two pass TD through two games. Look elsewhere if you can…He’s still startable, but Kurt Warner probably won’t post his usual numbers due to a very bad matchup against the Colts, who have only allowed 139 pass yards per game and have yet to give up a pass TD (partly because they are so bad against the run)…There are a number of lower-level QBs that have tough matchups this week: Matthew Stafford (vs. WAS), JaMarcus Russell (vs. DEN), Shaun Hill (@ MIN), Byron Leftwich (vs. NYG) and Kerry Collins (@ NYJ).

Stay away from the Cleveland RBs this week against the Ravens’ top-ranked rush defense…With the Bears coming to town, don’t expect a big game out of Julius Jones, who struggled last week and is fighting off Justin Forsett…They’re still somewhat startable, but Thomas Jones and Leon Washington aren’t likely to find much rushing room against a Tennessee defense that is excellent against the run, yielding just 1.9 yards per carry. Washington may be able to make some headway in the passing game, however…Cedric Benson has been great thus far (RB12), but with the Steelers coming to town, he should probably hit the bench. Pittsburgh has the 8th-best rush defense in the league and has yet to yield a rushing TD…

I’d still start him in most situations, but don’t expect Roddy White to have a career day against a Pats defense that has done a nice job of taking away their opponents’ wide receivers this year…Bernard Berrian doesn’t yet have great chemistry with Brett Favre, and I don’t think he’s going to find it this week against a pretty gritty 49ers defense…I would avoid all of the mediocre fantasy wideouts that play for the Titans (Justin Gage and Nate Washington), 49ers (Isaac Bruce and Josh Morgan) and Buccaneers (Michael Clayton) this week, as the matchups aren’t good and none of the WRs are dependable enough to overcome a bad matchup.
